The trick is to always always ALWAYS be systematic.

Normally, you can do this just fine since it's looking for files with particular names, but I guess Unity or the SDK reads every file in the directory.

I'm trying to upload an avatar to VRChat that uses Dynamic Bones but it gets stuck at "Pushing those upload speeds!!" for some reason. I'm on Unity 5.6.3p1, VRChat SDK 2018.01.26.13.13, and using v1.2.0 of Dynamic Bones. I can upload just fine on models that don't use dynamic bones, and re-installing everything doesn't do anything.

Any ideas?

It should be in the vrchat library in their scripts somewhere.
Just open it ctrl+f and search for 20000, replace that with 65000. Never upload more than that. Also don‘t forget optimizing other things like atlassing your textures and keeping the dynamic bones and other effects reasonable.

All of you people running around with overly complex, drawcall heavy avatars are just like someone that doesn't take a shower and inflicts their nasty body odour on everyone else. Which is ironic because you probably do that in the real world too.

Limited Dissolve everything but the skin, it helps out a lot. I like to do it before I actually do the decimate process. Try to avoid doing it on the mesh for the whole face too, so for example if there's 2 meshes for the face and one of them is for the upper face and not the whole face then it's ok to do the former one. Everything but those two are generally ok in my cases. The best part about it is, it preserves shapekeys and such, so you can still do it on the eye meshs and whatnot. Then .1% or .2% Collapse with Symmetry or whatever your preference is, personally I like to aim for at the very least 100-200 faces.

If you're running out of things to decimate and you're close , I think it's pretty safe to collapse decimate skin at in the .4% to .6% range. If you're STILL struggling, then decimate the arms/hands but try to find a balance with the skin mesh's decimation. A little tip if you didn't know, before you hit apply, it still shows what the tri will be if you did apply it, so it can be handy to gauge what it'll be when you decimate other stuff. I think those two should be the last thing you should decimate (but I'd avoid arms/hands if you can help it). If you're lucky and the character's hands aren't actually visible then it's pretty safe to delete them, same with nails and tatas and vaginas and suchfourth. Though, I'd probably avoid deleting invisible legs and chest meshs, because there might be problems with unity not detecting them if you ever do VR with them. Just decimate as low as you can get to save on tris.

Well can‘t decimate my cat tail and lots of pointy hair without it looking lile shit. Some models also have clothing that isn‘t just one surface on the whole body but layered on top and you can‘t just delete the body underneath because you can still see it.
Saying you can decimate anything below 20k without looking like shit is a lie.

Blender's decimation tool should be left for individual pieces like buttons, never the whole model.
Go in edit mode, press ctrl+tab, select edge selection. See any surfaces on the model that could be flattened? Select all the edges inside that spot, leaving the rectangle around it unselected, then press X and dissolve edges.

The less attention gathering of a spot it is, the bigger chunks you can dissolve into one. Stuff like skirts can go from thousands to dozens of tris. Same with hair.
In general it's worth to remember it's the texturework that makes anime girls look good, not the excessive polygons. If you keep stuff uniform, you can get away with removing a lot.

Besides that, there are likely plenty of smaller details loaded with polys you can outright delete without losing anything crucial to the character's look. Other things you can delete are any backsides of double-sided meshes, unless the textures on each side actually matter to be different. Hair, shirt and pant sleeves, and teeth to name a few can all be reduced to planes with double-sided textures.

I've dissolved a model from 80k to <20k before, it's definitely possible. And I did it without touching the face or hands at all.

If such a map was made, players playing as props might be disadvantaged, for instance, if youre in say an apartment map and the props avatars available are a chair and a lamp, everything else can be ignored while searching out players.

Probably should make a lot of different prop avatars, or make the world say, a chair and lamp warehouse, where 90% of everything is a chair or a lamp.

Also perhaps scatter prop avatar pedestals throughout the map so players could swap on the fly to re-hide. Or even make "tiers" of prop avatars where common ones are easy to get to, and better ones have a higher risk to get to, maybe even the best ones being just short of hidden?
