Vive = turbo expensive. Better SteamVR support. Better roomscale (which, as I said, I don't care about). More shit to plug in. Cables get in the way.

Oculus = Better price. Better controllers. Less shit to plug in.

Oculus seems like the better option for me, but the lack of SteamVR support could be a dealbreaker. Is it actually that bad? Will it get better soon?

I'm less about "experiences" and more about playing stuff I already have in VR. Skyrim in particular. When will SkyrimVR be out on PC? Will it work with Oculus?

Oculus has more shit to plug in (to your computer); the Vive Lighthouses are just dumb beacons that only need electrical power.

Oculus supports SteamVR but you have to enable third-party app support in the Oculus software. Oculus doesn't tell you this, of course, because they want to lock you into buying games from Facebook.

Room scale is something you'll want after you play standing and front-facing for a while. It's really useful to move naturally in VRChat and other games like Onward. You can do room-scale with either headset, but the Oculus requires the additional purchase of a third sensor to get the most out of it.

The main difference for our purposes (VRChat) is that Vive allows you to add on tracker pucks to get your legs and waist into the game. It seems like a lot of money for a small thing but after trying it out, going without the leg trackers almost feels like playing in desktop mode. You can approximate it on the Rift using a Kinect, but it's a kludgey solution and limits you to front-facing only.

The appeal of roomscale is most apparent in something like VRChat or the painting / modeling apps where you can walk yourself around the environment. The difference between having to stand still vs. being able to walk around someone or something really adds to making the experience feel real, but again if you're just after the traditional gaming experience it wont make much of a difference in those types of games.

each headset only has 1 cable, the Vive uses a breakout box for HDMI / USB / Power that sits by your computer.

The Vive has the better base tracking technology, it uses lighthouses to paint the play area for the headset and controllers to track which means you get full movement out of the box with no loss of tracking as long as you set it up right. The Rift needs 3+ sensors to do this to that degree. The vive is less comfortable out of the box because you need the deluxe audio strap to equal the RIFT, and the vive is heavier. The vive however does have the brigther screen which means you can achieve better contrast ratios with it.
