It sounds like the two real options for VR(chat) are ~$850 bux for a vive + 3 trackers + straps (and maybe another $100 for the audio strap), vs $400 for the facebook machine. Is the vivepuck experience really worth double the price, just for vrchat? My predilection for open-source software shit also makes me lean towards the vive/steamVR, software-wise, and the expandability of the lighthouse tracking over oculus's infrared cameras seems like it'll hold better value hardware-wise in the future.

Any other factors to consider here? My internet summary sense is that vive has better and expandable tracking, while oculus has better controllers, and is a lot cheaper, but muh free software.

Creator update works fine for me, as far as "fine" can get for win10. You can get the official ISO image from microsoft, and the activation crack is also easy to find. There are also some debloating scripts floating around github for making it more tolerable.

Software, while closed source, is actually better on the Oculus. Their anti-lag shit is years ahead of steams. The tracking, while negligible really, is also a bit better on the Oculus when set up properly and has less jittering. Screen is also better despite the resolution being the same.

I made the switch from Rift to Vive this past week. The rift is better in every single way(controllers, screen clarity across the entire field of view, tracking stability, overall comfort) except for the lack of full body tracking support. Thanks again for the opinions. After suppressing my GNU+hardon, it does look like the oculus is likely better for what I want to get out of VR. I'm still unsure if I'll really get into vrchat since I'm a shy dork IRL, so the ROI on leg tracking feels marginal. The knuckles controllers soon™ does twist my hand a bit in the other direction, but it's valve, so it's probably not for another year. And as loath am I to give money to facebook, I know at least Carmack is getting a cut. I at least trust that glorious autist.

the only downsides to the rift+kinect is you need the Xbone kinect for best quality, and that requires windows 10

I run at 2.0 supersampling most of the time. I bump it to 2.5 for Onward, but beyond that you can't really tell.
If your Vive is blurry all the time, use the ruler included with the thing and measure your IPD in the mirror, then set it to that. It helps.
