I'd say that a lot of VRChat's popularity comes with the user generated content in terms of avatars and worlds.
Then you have that most VR games are pretty simple things or require a better playspace or set up of equipment to get the most out of them. VRChat on the other hand is rather lax in terms of physical space required if you just want to gesture around.

I wonder how to balance avatar customizability vs gameplay in an actual competitive game though. e.g. if you had a CS-style shooter, it seems like the meta would devolve into everyone playing 1 tri texturless meshes. I don't really blame you, but I think I wouldn't join a Discord for the game even if it were public. People have taken to Discord as a way to make a mess of the thread. There was a pretty good, No Discord, consensus in earlier months, but it's naturally waned as people want to communicate with their new friends and as /vrg/ newfags join in and weren't anti-Discord from the start. We have a lot of autists who feel left out easily, honestly it feels like a pain to talk about Discord in-game or in thread because you'll always be on someones toes. On inner circles, you'll be a whole lot happier if you quit worrying about them and just find people you like and hang out with them. I had my own little crisis where I was worried about not being one of the cool kids and the conclusion that I came to is that my options were to quit or not give a shit. So I chose the latter.

On discords, not a single person has come to me and said "I really want a discord!" despite my soliciting opinions on it the other day. Some people came to me about a steam group, which seemed like an okay idea, but in light of the fact that not a single person has asked me for a discord with name on them makes me think it's just anon trying to start shit. I think the community is fine without a discord, and that the community doesn't even want one because no one is asking for one - except for anon here.

eh, not particularly. if you work a dead end job at mcdonalds for about 2 months you can probably get a vr set easily, depending if you go WMR or Rift. Vive is a little more IRL grinding to get though since that can easily go for a 1k$ if you get legtracking pucks. Then again, you might need to get new PC parts to even run VR. So in a way it is a richfag thing but at the same time it isn't.

I have some pretty wide glasses and my rift fits mostly fine. I just have to put the headset on face first and then slide the straps on my head. Pretty easy and comfy though

a better option is to invest in a pair of custom lens inserts.

After looking up Sansar, it turned out it was still half-implemented and only usable for world creation. I'm guessing Linden Labs wants to keep their cash cattle in Second Life and won't take Sansar out of content library building mode until they're ready to make it their primary focus.

another way to put it is to compare it to the early internet of the 90's. it's experimental, extremely buggy, but along with that, comes enormous freedom. you can use your own shaders, your own models your own assets, etc there is an enormous amount of freedom.

the game is free, and, you can actually play it and enjoy all of those benefits even without a virtual reality headset. Desktop mode is limited, but still offers a fantastic experience.

it is the kind of wild west freedom this game has that allowed shit like the knuckles meme, which attracted the streamers, which skyrocketed the game's exposure.
