For the headpat gesture however I've found it's a pretty subtle mixture of relaxed, happy, and submission to get the right effect. Even better if you can get other parts of the body into the action as well like ears or tails if you got them.

Hey I'm setting up VR but I keep getting this zoom blur that makes everything hard to read. IPD doesn't seem to effect it. If I get it on my head JUST right then that helps but any small movement ruins it. Looks like something with the lenses.

From what little I've putzed with it, it's definitely more limited in terms of player -> npc and npc -> npc interaction.

I sometimes get the same problem, and I just end up loosening all the straps completely and redoing it so it'll settle in whatever the "right" configuration is, instead of whatever stable-but-wrong position it is otherwise. The rift feels like it sits lower on my face than it should, but it makes things less blurry, and I guess it makes more sense to see down to your hands than up into the sky.

Intrinsically with current HMDs there's also this accommodation vergence coupling effect where your eyes will attempt to refocus on the virtual position of objects yet the actual focal plane is still the (also virtual) HMD screen itself. So my Vive and Trackers arrived today - I bought them in light of the Rift + Trackers stuff that came out a few days ago. I've played around with the Vive and Trackers for a couple hours.

Rift is WAY better than Vive. It's such a non-contest that it's ridiculous that people generally put them on an even keel.

The wands are fucking abysmal. Huge and heavy (which makes my style of headpats a challenge, as the weight shifts when you rotate them). Difficult to do the correct emote. Unintitive. Emotes literally take half a second to actually play - how nobody has mentioned this blows my mind. I see why people say I'm so natural with my gestures/ movements - because I don't use a fucking Vive.

The HMD is also better on the Rift - but marginally. The center of the screen is sharper and the colors are better on the Vive. The corners of the screen however are blurry. The real issue is the glare - on maps with bright spots, it's quite difficult to see, in a way that really kills immersion. Oculus is much more consistent.

I didn't actually mind the fit/ comfort. I found the Vive easier to put on. The lack of built in headphones sucks though. Earbuds don't play so well with me and I think my headphones would be too big and heavy.

Bottom line, the wands FUCKING SUCK. I knew they would be a downgrade, but holy shit. Awful. I'll see if I can join the true God race soon (Rift + Trackers). The trackers are great, but I'll need to sort out the problems that come with FBT.

If they can't make room for more IR constellations then what they could do instead is make some colored LED strips with built in gyroscopes and accelerometers. Would require some more cameras aside from the oculus sensors, but I imagine it's the best they can do given that their constellation system is a dead end. What I just described is already pretty similar to what someone can do with driver4vr already, if they get colored LED strips and something that tracks orientation such as the PS Move controllers or switch controllers.

Tracking dots in an image isn't that processing intensive, an extra belt and ankle bracelets should be fine with the current cameras, especially if augmented with an IMU like the headset (and pretty sure the touch controllers too). Speaking of, has anyone here tried to /diy/ some full body trackers with the IMU breakouts at adafruit/sparkfun? I'm thinking about trying that plus aruco fiducials and an rgb camera for global registration. Should be cheaper than the Kinect, though obviously requires effort.
