We're going to be holding an event for a couple of minutes at most tonight at 11:30 EST to test optimization for watching the soccer match on Sunday night. We're all going to pile into the Ampitheater and use a pedestal avatar there that's going to be 0 tris, 0 materials, 0 meshes, 0 bones, and not even set up for IK tracking and see how the FPS is. The lag was so bad last time that we had to split up into two different instances just to watch the soccer match, which sucks. So hopefully if this goes smoothly enough and the FPS is bearable we can all watch it in one instance on Sunday.

So yeah, 11:30 EST tonight, if you can hop on and come to the ampitheater for a few minutes and wear the avatar, then go back to whatever you were doing, that'd be swell.

Download CATS plugin tool for blender, open the model in blender. Hit the “join meshes” button underneath the CATS tab, and then re-export as fbx. It is LITERALLY a single button press to fix unmerged meshes.

Top right corner there are three diagonal lines, drag them to the left. Now on the bottom left where the cube is hit that and switch it to UV/Image Editor mode. Open up the texture file on the bottom, put your model in edit mode on the 3D view, voila.

I googled how to get models from my obscure game.
There's like one guide on deviant art and two non-english guides on youtube.
It involved an app that decrypts a specific achive file type, and a specific blender version to read a specific script to import the model file type.
All those hoops to jump through, but hey, I have the model in-game and a shitload of assets that'd last me more than 10 lifetimes.

I used quickbms and and a script written for it and the archive type my game has.
I'm not familiar with ninja ripper but I've seen it mentioned here and there.

So yeah, some bruteforce googling should point you to the right direction.

Alright hold on a second here. Your video card should have extra inputs. Why don't you use them? SteamVR has an automatic sound device switching feature, so you should use that. If it doesn't work, what I've done is instead created a .bat file shortcut on my desktop that changes the input device, so I just double click that when I do VR. I thought the base stations turned on and off automatically? Isn't that what the bluetooth is for? As for trackers yeah you probably can't improve that.

Reminder that we're holding an optimization test event tonight at 11:30 EST (2 and a half hours from now) to test for watching soccer on Sunday. Originally it was just going to be one pedestal avatar with no meshes, materials, bones, literally nothing, but I'm going to be adding a few more pedestal avatars for testing. One that'll be a flat 2d plane with 1 material and 1 bone, another that's going to be a regular avatar with unlit shaders and no IK tracking, and finally this fourth one in the picture, which is just going to be a regular, atlassed avatar with no dynamic bones and cubed shading, so essentially equivalent to anyone that has an optimized, atlassed avatar without dynamic bones.

Now we can truly see if optimization is a meme.

Admittedly a newbie, and following a tutorial on how to setup models since I want to learn it for myself.
I've come to an issue though, the hands on this model seem to have finger rigging issues, as the tips of fingers on both hands are bent upwards, and on the left hand downwards.
I'm assuming it has to do with the lack of fingertip bones, but the guide I'm following doesn't show how to fix stuff like this.
The rest of the model is perfectly fine, just have this issue.

I have 43 materials and over 200 dynamic bones.

So the results of the optimization stress test were pretty interesting, and in some cases a bit surprising. In all invisible avatars with no meshes, bones, materials, anything at all, with ~40 people we were getting ~45-50+ fps, with a video also playing in the background. Switching into the Unity-chan 2d plane cutout which is 2 tris, 1 material, and 1 bone yielded similar results, maybe 5 fps drop at most.

Once we switched into the Kanna Nikei avatar though which is an atlassed avatar (45k polys, regular cubed shaders, 1 material 1 mesh no dynamic bones) the fps was unbearably bad, to the point where a lot of people were stuck in loading screens. Thankfully we were right next to the pedestals so we could switch back. So even with 40-50 people, all atlassed, in a world that is as optimized as it can get (sans the video player), it was bad. If you ran away from the herd you could get maybe a solid 17 fps though. Next we switched into an atlassed Nikei avatar that was using unlit shaders, with blend probes, shadows, lighting, etc. all turned off, and we were getting at least 25 fps if not more for a lot of people.

When we switched into a different atlassed Nikei avatar with no lighting that had no IK tracking rig (T-Posed) most people were able to get ~30 fps, with some getting even more than that. When we went to a world with a mirror, we were still getting around the same frames. The best fps we got though was with the Unity-chan 2d plane avatar. 40+ fps at all times.

So basically, what we learned from the test is that IK tracking and lighting absolutely destroy FPS, atlassing makes no difference when you have a group of people that size (obviously atlassing is way better than having people with like 50 materials each, but the regular atlassed avatar results were so bad it couldn't get much worse), and we can all use either 2d cutouts of our avatars to watch the game, or T-Posed versions of our avatars with no IK tracking, or lighting on Cubed's Flat lit.

Shaders aren't the issue, it's the lighting. Having an avatar with these settings turned off was the difference between crippling 10fps with loading screens and bearable 25+ fps.
In terms of what we do with the information? Probably nothing. It's already known that IK tracking is the worst killer of FPS. We could go yell at Tupper but he probably wouldn't be surprised at the results.

I feel like this is a tough problem but wondering if anyone here has any creative ideas or just able to provide some help brainstorming some solutions for this skirt.

The pretty-but-terrible option is rigging the armature so that each of those dangly bits has its own dynamic bone. But that would require the entire skirt to be dynamic boned, and that's going to be hundreds of bones, so that's pretty much out of the question.

The other option is just weight painting them and have them stretch across the skirt (with or without some amount of dynamic bones in the skirt), that's the optimal solution but not the prettiest.

Any other ideas that would let them have some sort of rudimentary physics like in her artwork? Maybe unity cloth?

No, but for props and non-shapekey expressions you can always make them a 2H gesture - one gesture unhides activates/unhides a parent object, the other gesture actives the intended object. Then you repose the hands with the original gestures. If you do this you won't lose any gestures and you won't accidentally show your prop unless you do two different gestures at the same time with each hand.
