Something I feel is still missing is a physically based grabbing system, even if it's more expensive to compute. Like, all your fingers collide with objects, and those collisions inform where and how grabbing happens. It'd be hard to find a good and efficient method to approximate the friction of when grabbing can and should happen, but it would be much more immersive. And even with that system, there could still be magnetism so that more useful grips like handles can be easily gripped with the right grip you intend for the user.
Lone Echo or Echo VR kind of does a cool thing where the fingers can dynamically wrap around whatever object is being held. I haven't seen any other game do it. It's not exactly what I want, but even this would be great to see in other games. Also, body presence, I wish other developers at least gave us the option for a body we can see in VR instead of ONLY just floating hands.

If for some reason it doesn't and you just have to have your flowing hair, you can merge the bone chains both "vertically" in the hierarchy, and "horizontally" in between bone chains next to each other, to reduce your hair bones down to ideally <10.
I got my 24 original hair bones in my avatar down to 6, but I just end up using the non-dynamic bones version all the time anyway, since it looks fine. Maybe even better overall, since it doesn't fall into weird positions when I look down, despite my best efforts with colliders.

i don't really have a guide but maybe i can explain
for example the eyes, you'd open the atlas in gimp or whatever and crop everything out except the eyes and save it. then in blender you change the texture for the eyes material to the new cropped image and move the uv's in place. then repeat for the other shit.
so instead of using the entire atlas 2k or 4k atlas for each material, you'd probably be under 1k for each material.
Under 10 materials is fine for small meetups, but please have an atlased avatar with 1 material, 1 mesh, and no dynamic bones for when it gets crowded.

Anything under 10 is fine for any sized meetup. The difference between 1 material and 10 is negligible, it's why you can have worlds be thousands of draw calls and be fine. The performance killers are IK calculations (specifically on the network side) alongside dynamic bones and voice. These are the biggest performance killers. You can even ask the people qualified to know this yourselves if you don't believe me, 1-10 is considered optimized in the current state of the game. Maybe some day when the game becomes so optimized that we have 100 people in a room then maybe the new "optimized" cap will be 1-3 materials, even though it's incredibly doubtful.

Elaborate why 1 material will magically make meetups give us our FPS back vs my under 10 materials? Un popular opinion time, not even 30 materials makes a damn difference.
