Getting help for blender/unity stuff here tends to be shouting into the void for me, and even if someone helps me in one message, it'll be hours before I get another. By then, I'd have solved it on my own or given up.
You're definitely not wrong in the fact that people who get shitposted a ton are often the ones providing the most help for things in unity/blender though. I'd almost be the shitposters just hit "fix model" in cats, import into unity, upload, and then call it a day with no effort.

Who /mute/ here?
It's the most fun, the other day I randomly started talking and people got confused about where it came from.

my cable is also tangled up to hell, It may be both
>>220555446
It's 80% the dev's fault, but the other 20% of the problem is those "simple" models with 50 unbatchable drawcalls clogging up the rendering queue. Some maps are quite bad too.
It's an unfortunate side effect of allowing custom avatars with a low bar of optimization enforcement. I'd honestly rather suffer 20fps than be stuck in some sort of SteamVR home generic "two hands and an ugly head" avatar hello though.
>>220556109
>disconnecting everything connected to it's USB ports
god, this happens to me every few months, and it's a total fucking bitch. for some reason is just arbitrarily decides to not recognize me plugging them back in either, so i have to reboot my computer until it decides to recognize my keyboard again so I can boot up.

>>220556972
How many people were in the rando world? NA EST late night meets are well optimized by VRC standards, but the shit IK code (which we as players can't change) still makes instances with ~25 people in them chug.
>>220557035
It's not Unity, it's just the shit they're using for stuff like IK is horribly outdated and terribly unoptimized.

>>220557319
about the same amount, though there were more desktoppers so I guess the IK was the issue
>>220557447
That's basically true. the version of FinalIK they use is uneditted and full of spaghetti code. If they even bothered to rewrite any of it like they should have, IK would be a non-issue for performance. How do people make avatars with "stands", or other stuff where multiple humanoid armatures follow each other's pose? Is it actually the same armature but with the origin of rotation moved somehow for the other meshes?

they're using an old version of unity that doesn't have a concurrent task scheduler or support C#/.NET async/await (and all of the stuff under the System.Threading.Tasks namespace).
new versions of unity support that I believe.
imo though, due to the nature of unity and its legacy design, it'll never be able to optimally utilize many core CPUs in the same way better written engines can (an example would be idtech 6).

Damn it's really starting to feel like a heatwave here. I'm glad I'm not trying to dance in vr in this weather. Vigorous exercise heats you up and increases your risk of heatstroke, so try to limit yourself while it's hot (that includes vrsex, sorry pervs). Make sure to drink enough water, and get enough salt too. Drinking a lot of water drains salt from the body and too little salt can be even worse than too much. Also before you open the windows ask yourself if it's hotter outside or inside, if it's hotter outside leave them closed. (I guess it sounds obvious when you say it like that but I never would have thought of it by myself). Cool baths and drinks are a great way to cool down if you feel overheated, while hot drinks, caffeine and alcohol make it harder to deal with the heat.

a task scheduler is a software system that schedules asynchronous tasks aka jobs to be run by worker threads. it can be as simple as an asynchronous queue and a thread pool, although more advanced implementations typically have work-stealing queues for each worker thread, and a way to do fine-grained thread wake up.
multicore refers to the hardware having multiple CPU cores on the same die or package

It's different armatures, each puppet's bones having a fixed joint component that points to the matching bones in the main armature.
The prop needs to have a bone/s.
Add rigid body component to head bone.
Add fixed joint component to prop bone.
In the fixed joint component, point/link it to the head bone.
In the fixed joint component, experiment on which (xyz) position to freeze.

>>220577134
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XNO7Yosh6fQ was kind of helpful to me. Turning down the strength and weight of the brush makes it easier to smoothly weight the vertices. Also you can select and hide other vertices that you don't want to occlude your painting, like your hands. Also remember you can rotate your leg bones in pose mode and still weight paint, which makes it easier to fix specific out-of-place vertices.
This cutie fell asleep during my headpats.

cloth physics
they are actually pretty good for optimization. cloth physics require splitting the designated part of the mesh into a seperate mesh, but- and I dont quite remember how this goes- but it is better for performance because it handles it on another core or whatever

>>220586946
The purpose of an anonymous imageboard was never to be linked in any way to your identity in an online VR game for boomers sucking virtual cock. By shitting on people you are breaking a wall of anonymity and destroying the entire purpose of the site, and essentially cheating on the other end where you aren't anonymous. You are deathly afraid your words will make people see you in such a bad light, rethink them instead od abusing your anonymity to be a shitter. It's pathetic you can't speak up your opinion to people you dislike and doubly pathetic you are afraid of attaching your identity to your true thoughts. You might as well not even be a person if you're going to conform so hard you can't speak your true thoughts and have to abuse one way anonymity, and try to use anonymity as a defense, whilst attributing identities you perceive to posts, thereby violating the rule of anonymity.

>>220588524
>You know very well people is not dumb and limit their dynamic bones
Completely flase, people still think 1 dynamic bone script on a chain of 100 dynamic bones is one bone. It probably doesn't matter on just tits but cloth like capes and hair and skirts usually have absurd amount of bones. It's not really anyone but the creators fault either, it could be much more performant. And honestly? The game probably limits us more than dynamic bones does, but we can only do so much before we hit that wall that doing as much as we c` is needed so I actively encourage (no i dont shame) the use of no dynamic meshes.

You don't know how many bones/verts they have. Atlassing does not matter as much as you think it does (not saying don't atlas, please reduce your materials as much as you can, optimization is good rpactice)
>>220589515

Not to an accurate degree, proper weight painting on a small amount of bones can easily look better than a ton of bones.
>>220589343
you would be surprised, one time tupper called someone out because they were 117 materials as a generic anime girl

>>220589673
Those draw calls only matter once it spawns, and if the materials were instanced (they probably werent in this case) draw calls are "smaller". You can batch those.
>>220589764
You are good material wise if you're below 10 materials, and if you are "multi-atlasing) you can't justify any material being above 1k or 512x512 if 3 or more materials. 1k for 2, 2k for 1 and 515x515 for 3-10. (technically it only frees up a little vram but meh)

>>220590724
I was using 160 MB at one point because I presumed the png's file size would be the same as the VRAM usage. You could have a 4096x4096 black square that is 16 KB and it could still use 80 MB of VRAM.
>>220590945
how many materials originally was that room anyways? less materials means it's easier to atlas at lower resolution maintaining quality
>>220591181
In that case I'd use a single 1k atlas and just reduce the size of everything so it fits.
>>220591307
its a map its not atlased, but the materials are reused and instanced. your anime model has less detail than the textures used here and does not need a 4k texture anywhere.
>>220591380
a single 2k atlas isn't bad either, if you are using multi materials is when you go below 2k.
Being assholes about optimization is just going to encourage people to not optimize out of spite.
Instead of being mean about it, warmly encourage people to optimize and help them when they're having trouble with it.

thats because I didnt know about merging materials at the time. this was several months ago.
I downloaded the model, passed it through blender into unity and only saw one material and one sphere. so i assumed I was optimized- until eventually I selected the mesh to handle shapekeys and saw that single material sphere was actually repeated 30 times across the model, it just doesnt show as 30 material spheres in unity.

>>220592991
For unity and vrchat, the only thing an additional mesh does is create another drawcall if done correctly. When you don't separate meshes manually, you get what you're describing. The reason why it's an issue when unity automatically does it is because it doesn't account for materials and it multiplies the drawcalls by 2, because both meshes will have all materials.
If you have one atlas on one mesh, and then a different atlas on the second, it's still just 2 drawcalls.

we shouldnt have to go out of our way to micromanage materials and shit down the last pixel when the core blame lies with the horrible optimization and resource hungry IK.
optimization is good, and helps the game run smoother, but at the end of the day, with how many people we have at meetups, atlasing alone is not really helpful, and just eschewing dynamic bones doesnt really help either, although it certainly goes a long way. Today, about 90-95% of vrg has some level of vr, and a pretty hefty chunk of that has full body in some capacity. VRG is also much bigger than it was.
so at the end of the day, and we've seen this with the soccer world tests, probably one of the biggest issues, is IK, especially full body IK. in groups as large as our meetups get. But what do you do, stop using avatars that move? stop using IK? whats the point of playing at that point?
tl;dr instead of going on witchunts for who does or does not atlas, which is NOT the end all be all indicator of optimization, nor is it all that helpful given the kinds of breakpoints on materials, light the fire under the vrchat devs asses on optimizing their game so we dont HAVE to be so anal about it ourselves. The user should NOT need to jump through this many hoops to enjoy the game efficiently. Especially when just a few patches ago, performance was better than it is now, and THEY are the ones who fucked it up when they released the camera update and made it worse.

Can you run some benchmarks with different numbers of polys? E.g. subdivide the mesh or parts of it in blender to try 20k polys, 50k polys, 100k polys, etc, with the same shader. My guess is that performance is pretty flat from 0-65k polys with a sudden jump to twice as slow at 65k, only because unity splits the mesh at that point. I don't think transferring skinned vertices to the GPU and running the vertex shader is the bottleneck, like >>220592780 seems to think.

Anonymity is a double edged sword. But to get the good side of it we have to accept the bad side wherein shitposters.
Culture is culture because people agree to follow it. Breaking from it is well and good from time to time to expand and evolve the culture but never should it be broken for the sake of breaking it.
Being able to talk together anonymously makes it so that people's posts are judged by its content rather than some accumulated "credit score" or on the bad-end "shitposting score".
The main gripe was never "not getting credit" but "namedrops getting credit for anonymous things".
People helping anonymously is more than happy to continue helping anonymously, they just don't want some namedrop getting that credit instead of just being credited to the whole thread anonymously so people keep coming back here for discussion of multiple kind with many different anons instead of going directly to the namedrop's discord and other stuff.
Posting the question also allows discussion around the idea and helps other anons that didn't even think to ask the question yet.

The biggest problem with atlasing is you better be 100% certain the model is finished because once it's atlased you can't separate by materials anymore. Mesh editing in blender without separation will scuff your shapekeys and explode your model every single time.
Someone can say "so atlas before wearing avatar in public" but the fastest way to find problems you might have missed is put it in front of other people.
>optimization
I think blame for VRC's performance is actually more against the users Users break the tri upload limit and have poorly optimized avatars (you don't need multiple 2048x2048 textures, you fucking idiots)
On the other hand the CPU is super taxed because it's not canned animations most of the time, and the x/y/z of multiple limbs on multiple people has to be translated with pretty decent precision. Not to mention the fact it's fucking VR to boot.
Running into the performance ceiling so early into the platform is pretty grim for potential content that could be created though.

We tested this shit back in fucking march. the moment a world hit 25 people, performance took a shit no matter what you tried- and this was pre camera patch when performance was arguably better

They remove arbitrary C# scripting, so you have to implement any logic you want in their convoluted trigger system + animation state machine hacks. For good reason, to be fair, since you don't want arbitrary c# code running on your computer just from jumping into a portal. Soonâ„¢ they're going to release their not!playmaker visual scripting language thing to give more power to map makers. Details on on the dev updates/medium blog.

>>220598836
True. There's actual scripting and content there. I think that's what disappoints me so much about VRC right now. I'm not going to call SL a gold standard, but why would you set yourself up to be worse than them from the get go.I was actually going to reference second life for this whole optimization discussion, but then I realized linden is a bunch of fucking idiots too, and people run around with 20+ different textures because of how much you smash different objects onto your avatar.
>>220598695
I don't actually think they are genuine when they whine or when they say it's cancer it's a simple ploy to be able to annoy you while trying to get the group to shame you at the same time
if they are genuine they are just severely retarded and highly selfish

to fire it yes
to bring it in and out or basically make it invisible and not invisible would be a simple animation override
but to just have it sitting there on your arm just make sure it is not transparent when you export it from blender

According to the website and comments on random articles they've made progress through the years and it's more streamlined. I wouldn't know since I never tried it.

Oh I have a solid idea on that kind of stuff it's how I got my sabers to work. Thinking of doing the same thing but faster for the rail fun firing.

>>220611497
shush you're supposed to be killing yourself
>>220611497
a modern gpu can have about 320gb/s bandwidth
sounds like a ton of textures and model data right
except thats a second
at 90fps thats only 3.6gb per frame of total data in/out
so yes, "vram" is an issue
>>220610913
It looks like a dimly lit mmd stage. Congrats on "your" map, Brown Girl.
>>220611619
the frame buffers for the screen at 4k are nearly 300mb themselfs and there are two of them
not counting backgrounds windows useage
theres only like 2gb of texture data that can be sampled per frame
rough numbers not 100% exact
Redflag right before he kills you
>>220611637
did someone piss in your cheerios today?
>>220611619

>>220612712

>>220611767
258 GB
/90 for fps
you get 2.8GB allocated to every frame
if you and everyone else used w100mbs if textures, we'd reach this peak
We found a certain Kongou avatar in kantai world. It followed us back to mogra.
>>220612780
1060, event eh 6gb,the most common card, has 1.9 GB per frame for vr.
>>220611954
the how is vram an issue lmao
>>220612287
always use the tutorial avatar for scaling before uploading (tutorial avatars makes sure doors and whatnot are big enough to pass through).
also, please bake that lighting if it's not

>say your texture size is an issue
>you project vram
Because bandwidth itself for the gpu is an issue, a 1050 can only process 1.2 GB per frame. Why? it can push 112 GB per second
vr has 90 frames PER second
so that means it can push to 1.1 GB
so when theres more than that much data being processed, you get fucked. your vram isnt the only limiter concerning large texture sizes.
