This is the weirdest bug I've encountered in VRChat. There were people in my avatar world for some reason so I visited, and at spawn there's a bunch of trees hovering above. They have collision and made it hard to get out of spawn. There's also some different trees floating off to the side, and up in the room in the sky above the teleport point in that room. I went to another instance and the trees were gone (as it should be). Hecked up.

I have the VRCover basic set, though it's honestly not strictly better than the default foam. The "ultra thin" fake leather vrcover is good, especially now that it's getting into sweaty summer season again. Doesn't get soaked with sweat. However, it's very thin, so it's not as comfy as the default foam. The other two blue foam pads from VRCover are both too thick, 6m and 15mm, c the FoV even tinier. The cotton cloth cover that comes in the set is good to go over the ultrathin fake leather or even the rift foam, soaks up sweat, but it's a little loose.

If you were happy with the default face cover other than it dying, I'd just get a direct replacement. if not, vrcover is okay, might work for you.

back almost a decade ago, over at mbts, there was a 180deg fov project while palmer was working on the dk1 and was a regular over there.

It used a stacked fresnel lens system.
Around the time the AR room at valve was being shown off he was probably playing with this.
I like palmer but when fb took valve's toys away it probably felt to valve a bit like a betrayal.
I bet palmer regrets that.
I wonder if this stacked design is due to that.
Anyway, note the first reply is from cyberreality, a current (I think, unless that's changed?) employee at oculus. He was probably managing the forum community entirely back in the day.

Anyway, 180deg+ fov headsets have been possible for a while, dunno why nobody did stacked fresnel commercially for the longest time, bout time it's finally making landfall.
Lockheed martin had a very close patent, it might even have just been locked in copyright hell which is why only diy people were doing it.
it's likely valve came up with something just different enough for it to work.
Here's a fun fact too, it makes the hmd much smaller.
30mm from the screens is possible with stacked design, with a focal length that is up close, allowing you to see things very close to you visually pretty sharp. You can even adjust for distance by spinning a focus ring.

This optics meme logic needs to die. There is nothing special about stacking lenses, or specifically fresnel lenses. What's special is how they implement it, because that can make it a great optical system, or that can make it a terrible optical system, and patents don't really tell us anything about that aside from a general overview, that misses the majority of details that actually matter when designing working systems. There is nothing inherent about stacking fresnel lenses that makes things better.

And I'm pretty sure another optics mistake that people make is thinking that Rift and maybe Vive don't use "stacked" lenses. As far as I can tell, the Rift does. They've said it's a hybrid lens before, and you can see this thin line in pic related which looks like they bonded two elements together which is why it can be confused for a single element lens.

Also, I own a Wearality Sky (made by the Lockheed Martin guy). They have two fresnel elements (that aren't bonded together so you can actually take them out of the housing separately). And more importantly, they aren't terribly good, optically speaking. Even the Vive's fresnel lenses beat them in most ways other than FOV. But that's not important. I'm pretty sure the new StarVR (previously known as InfinitEye) uses some kickass "stacked" fresnel optics that beat most current optics, though it does come at a price.

So in the end we should probably just wait and see how things turn out, and don't expect anything based on incomplete information.

One of the biggest issues for hmd manufacturers right now is fucking lockheed martin - they patented a bunch of dual lens setups so there the only assholes that can use them commercially which is stifling the industry.
They also patented a fresnel lens that has a curvature to match your eye, so that it basically acts like a microlens array and gets rid of the angle of light issue so it's all sweet spot, no chromatic issues and very little distortion depending on where you're looking.
This is a big issue if you ask me - because now valve or anyone can't do anything like that.

I have two vives, one with smooth lenses, and one with the default fresnel lenses. I'll take the HUGE sweet spot, very very minor pixel swim and very very minor chromatic aberration at the edges over the fresnel's obnoxious god rays anyday.

Fresnel optics aren't necessarily bad. If you've tried the new StarVR, or the Oculus Go, or Pimax, you should notice that god rays aren't really much of a problem if at all in those headsets. They're still there, but they're reduced so much that it's not really annoying anymore like it is on the Rift/Vive. Huh, I installed the zucculus software exactly once back in april of last year on a clean, debloated win10 install, and I don't remember any issues like that. Either you curve the screen with a lens to match the eye, or you can forgo a lens and have the screen itself be curved.
if the screen was curved at 1/2 the human eye radius then used a lens to 2x magnify, linearly there would be no issue with light directionality causing issues with chromatic aberration since there would be none.
the whole reason we get distortions in vr at all is because we're trying to correct for the lensing of a flat display. Fix that so that instead light is coming at you in the same way it would be in the real world, along the curvature of your eye, and vr lens problem solved.
In fact, you could do a headset with no lens at all, just a single dome projection at 180deg in front of you and polarize each eye just like at 3d movies in the theater.

I have a VR headset and I fucking hate this general. I just come here every once in a while to check the pastebins and see if anyone's discussing something interesting for once (they never are) and saw your post. If you're into dadsims like Elite Dangerous, DCS, or racing games you will absolutely get your $300 worth out of it like I did. Roomscale's very cool and if you ever get the chance you should definitely check it out, especially well-received shit like Budget Cuts, Superhot, or Lone Echo (even though the gameplay is walking sim tier), but I personally only lasted a few months before I got tired of moving my desk out of the way and recalibrating it every time I wanted to play. I bust the roomscale out maybe once or twice a month, but use it seated pretty often.

The problem for me is that VR just has zero fucking support. Take something that should be an absolute shoe-in, lightgun games. Surely there are lots of people out there who enjoyed games like Time Crisis back in the arcades or when they owned CRTs, and would love to play them again in a more modern format, maybe even with 3D support hacked in?

But nope, we're 3 years in and there has been literally NO developer investing any time at all into getting this shit up and running. I hope the Index takes off with idiots when it ships with HL3 or something, because the current state of VR development is Novint Falcon tier.

Things certainly need reevaluating when one of the most realized and exploratory programs to use VR is a chatroom. I feel it certainly deserves existence, since user created content can be a great thing for a new medium like this, but it shouldn't be the focus.

A lot of my hopes ride on the Index and things like Boneworks coming out and being good in the near future. There are a few good games here and there at least. Blade & Sorcery with the most recent update feels real nice.
