I pre-ordered my new Vive index today. It's kinda expensive.

Now's a really bad time to be interested in getting a headset immediately. The index is almost guaranteed to be much better, but you're going to be waiting quite awhile. The eternal problem with the vive is that your controllers are going to shit out fast and you're probably going to want knuckles anyways.

Soooooo, you could spend $600 on a vive with audio strap, $300 on FBT, and $279 on knuckles. A total of $1179. Or you could wait, and spend $1300 on the index. $121 more for vastly increased visual fidelity, but the catch is you have to wait.

Let's assume you buy the vive now, but decide you want the index later. Let's ignore the audio strap, so $500 for the vive. You can reuse the base stations, and buy the $750 index/controller combo. You're up to $1250 already, and if you put in FBT, that's $1550 - an extra $250 over just buying the index total package and pucks.

If you're ever going to be interested in the Index, it makes the most financial sense to just wait and get it.

general question that i cant seem to find an answer for searchin, but for dynamic bone settings, lets say i set my inert to .5, does modifying the distribution work based on a percentage relative to the .5? ie. if i have 3 keys at 1.0, .5, and .0, will it change the inert effect in the chain from .5, to .25, to 0?
or is it a direct effect and the inert will be 1.0, .5, and 0

getting a weird effect whenever i load in on my avatar, i think it has to do with lighting but it almost acts like one of those world blocking shaders where its even on other peoples screens. i essentially see an inverted version of my avatar on my screen, with some weird transparency effects. only happens on certain worlds though, strangely enough i thought it was due to some weird lighting effects but apparently it happens on the Cards against humanity world too, and thats a pretty basic lighting world from what i can tell

A friend of mine showed me some streamerfag's ebin and funny moments stream highlights video and asked me if that's what my hundreds of hours were like. The streamer was some nanachi but what amazed me most was that all of the other people in the video were also nanachi. My first thought was that they were some unoriginal faggots all using the same base but the consistency of the characters grew on me very quickly. Consistency of style isn't something I've experienced with /vrg/ even when we have our costume events. Everyone there was like another character in the same world/tv show/universe while here we're all different and strive for originality. We have so many wildly different avatars that there's no common thread. The halo boys are the closest to a common theme of avatars but there's only like 3 of them.
For some reason writing this out I've completely disregarded kemonos, tdas, boats, guns, and custom maids as being consistent. Maybe I don't hang out with them enough and it's just my group of regulars that are wildly different. Maybe it's the shaders we all use being different. Maybe anime girls are so samey that we go out of our way to make them wildly different just to reduce that.
What would you think of avatar events being more structured? As in we drop a download to a base and you modify it as much as you like and see what everyone makes from it.

For vrg the easiest thing to do is to make a unityprefab that can instantly be slapped on and dropping it in the thread or discord.
The largest group conformity i've seen so far are things like that for new years or the recent slime avatars or the coconut kap coconut on top of head thing because it's easy, low effort and you can take a pre-existing avatar and just update it in a minute and you're done.
There's been a few clothing conformity instances last year where a bunch of people had the same school uniform during the school theme or meme sweaters during christmas. The highest effort group conformity is usually done by pairs or small groups of friends just doing simple VR cosplay.
Then there's the people who kinda just take outfits from the same games. We have a few people running around in Halo armor, Persona clothing and xenoblade outfits/avatars.
Personally I like the display of creativity and individuality vrg has when it comes to avatar themes. I also think it's great when people pair up and have matching avatars. So we get the best of both world here.
If you have an idea just try and get as many of your friends to go along with you. Doing most of the initial work will probably help and you might be able to boost your numbers with lazy people who want to participate but don't want to do any work.

Different anon, at this stage given GPU and CPU performance and the cost of manufacturing high resolution panels I would rather get more ppd/clarity than FoV.
I will be singing a different tune when higher resolution displays are cheaper.

Already have a Vive1, I will definitely be getting the knuckles.
As for the index HMD I am on the fence.
Highly doubt the subpixel count bump and resolution bump will increase the clarity enough to justify the upgrade price especially considering they increased the FoV a fair bit which offsets some of the ppd increase.

I am waiting to see some footage of the HMD from the viewpoint of the lens compared to other HMDs.
It is enough to get an idea, but trying it first hand in store would be best.
If it is not immediately obvious then it is a no buy from me.

HP Reverb have a balance of compromises that I agree with from a cost and technical specifications standpoint.
The only thing stopping me from buying it is that it uses a different tracking system, so it would be a hassle to use the knuckles with it since you'd be mixing two tracking systems.

Pi-max 5K plus or 8K X seems to be the only decent upgrade path from the vive 1 currently, but it is so huge and doesn't look particularly ergonomic especially when taking audio into account.
XTAL has the best specs with lighthouse tracking. It has insane clarity and FoV, but its pricetag for the HMD alone would buy you several complete index bundles. It costs around 4500 euros.

My read is that the main thing holding back ultra high resolution displays is GPU performance and lack of foeveated rendering. It's just infeasible to render that many pixels at 90 (or 120 on index) Hz for any measure of photorealism or even good looking stylized graphics, if you want the same pixel density across the whole FoV. Foeveated rendering will cut down on that load by 90%, but it'll require robust eye tracking.
