just got done playing with Gmod VR, controls are a bit jank in the video the guy 2 hands his pistol and has recoil and he seems to handle the crowbar just fine while in game I couldn't seem to 2 hand at all and the crowbar was another story on its own so the default controls must be trash. and after every loading scene in the hl2 campaign you have to re click on the vr mode by going to the Q menu
it's controls and hl2 loading screens are it's biggest weakness but unlike anything else hl2 and gmod were actually good games didn't seem jittery at all

Can anyone help me figure out how to get PSVR working with Steam VR? I've tried using iVRy and Trinus but with both of them I can see the tracking works on the mirror but the HMD output window is blank. I can see my desktop just fine so I know everything is hooked up correctly.

Apparently Pavlov has trigger pull animations, but the grip button closes the hand so they never work on Rift. You can see them on pistols by glitching the gun to stay in your hand by using the two handed grip and releasing the main hand first.

That might be a problem, and one I don't have an easy answer to. Being expressive really helps break the ice out in public worlds and arm movements play a big part in that for me.
If you don't have arms you'd need to make use of gesture overrides for facial expressions and exaggerate your head movement to help you be more expressive, outside of that or a model change talking to people might be your best last hope.

Already have experience in both unity and blender so I'm not worried about getting a model done, but from what I've seen after hard googling apparently most vrchat users just use unity-asset-store ready models or mmd ones, and the real creators are just artists who know their way around 3D modeling rather than Unity.
I was expecting to find some detailed tutorials on what kind of bones and blend shapes you need to make something 100% compatible with vrchat but there is nothing. Feels like I will have to experiment, which is going to take time. No wonder why most new people don't bother.

Then again the lack of information doesn't surprise me. Considering that a lot of streamers are living off that, no wonder why they try to keep some secrecy on how to do shit.

Rift S has better controller tracking, but lower resolution, worse panels, and no IPD adjustment.
For either one, you'd need a pretty beefy computer, so it might not be realistic for a laptop unless you're willing to spend $$$ or to build and lug around a LAN Box-type computer. If you get a laptop, be sure that the HDMI or DP out on them is connected to the GPU, not to onboard graphics.
Quest is probably going to be alright as far as games like Beat Saber go, but expect it to be very limited compared to PC VR.

Windows 7 is slow unoptimized garbage compared to windows 10 pro workstation.
10 pro and 10 home have huge telemetry issues.
But, with minor tweaks, 10 pro workstation is the leanest OS available, aside from some linux versions.
Steam's Proton makes it very rare that you'll need windows ever again. The only games that don't work nearly perfectly in Linux are games with DRM like epic's stupid bullshit.
Valve has day 1 support for the index on linux and steamvr home, including every single one of their games and 90% of the current vr catalog with very little performance hit.
In fact, you can save some money and use radeon 7 or vega 56/64 since the performance in vulkan is so fucking good it sometimes exceeds dx on windows.
But, setting it up is not brainlet tier, so either git good or accept windows 10.

From a user perspective, probably not much. The VRChat devs have to give HTC blowjobs and continue to be the market leader in VR social apps, but luckily they love sucking dick and the closest thing they have to a competitor (High Fidelity) just shut down its public worlds after wasting 70 million dollars.

The most important implication is if VRChat ever runs out of money, HTC will keep the servers running unless HTC also runs out of money by then (which they might since their cell phone business revenue collapsed).

JanusVR is open source FOSS. Anyone can port it. It uses WebVR and VRML which is things that were and are important for the open web in the future.
Janus can't die because it's code is foss. Anyone can host on any old webserver anywhere and peered communications means it's not going anywhere.

High fidelity does have FBT and is also open source/self-hostable. It's got a custom deferred rendering engine though, so there aren't any custom toon shaders for anime avatars besides just cranking the emissions on the pbr shader to 1, for unlit. It's not the best platform to build on, but it's a lot further along than janus at this point.

Alright everybody, the last two weeks of shop have been odd and in burst at random times. Shop is being held as a nice study corner so it has created the desired corner for working on stuff that many need in a place like /vrg/, That in mind, still going to host shop tomorrow, think another anon said he wanted to teach something there about his shader, so an actual lesson might be held. Going to take a break from the koikatsu at some point in the shop to take time to crunch out the serious sam editor work that needs to be figured out. The last time this was worked at the editor was challenging to work with and headway came from watching broken tutorials and "banging head against a wall" persistence.

Serious sam might be hosted again, possibly friday, hoping to get their workshop content figured out so we can upload our own models to the game. Depends on interest in sam, just going to ask around and do the usual census crap to see if people are interested.

The battery difference between Vive and Rift comes from the fact that the processing is done with the controller with Vive while with Rift it's done with the computer's CPU. The touch controllers are just IR LEDs with a gyroscope
That's why Vive has shorter battery life while Rift has more CPU usage
Having AA would just have the benefit of being hot swapable, with disadvantages like the voltage of rechargeable AA. This means you would need 5 AA (if you have 2 controllers and 2 pucks) and 5 more ready to swap every 4 hours, with a fast charger to charge the 5 batteries in less than 4 hours

Why couldn't they have sent over the data to the headset like they're doing already, but use the raw data instead, and then send that over to a link box that has the chips to calculate the tracking included? Battery would last much longer that way and you'd probably have less weight on the controllers and headset too.

Touch should have had a recharging circuit so you could just charge them overnight with a USB. The energy they require is so little that you could go a whole day minus time for sleeping and eating, and you would not run out of power, so you could easily make a charging stand and just quickly put them in there when you're done for the day and then they'll be ready for another full day the next morning.

Also holy shit guys, if there isn't a charging stand, magnetic USB cables are the fucking BOMB. So easy to just with one hand lazily wave the controller over the cable and it'll just snap on.

As far as I know, the lighthouses are just lasers that the controllers/pucks see and then use to know where they are. While Rift, controllers are sending IR that the sensors (cameras) can see and then sends to the computer where the CPU does the rest of the job

It's probably easier/better to just send the xyz positions from the controllers/pucks to the headset/dongles than sending all the raw data from the photosensors to the link box
