I can't decide between having weapons be physics based or not

Pros: Sword combat can have more weight, feel less gamey
Cons: tons of shit like if you move your hand into terrain weapon gets blocked and acts crazy, walking around your weapon hits stuff, harder to make feel right gameplay wise even if it feels better physically
Also, basically requires making other items like bow a physics item, and I don't like that. But making different items behave differently is weird too, although I guess doable.

How would your weapons work in VR if not physics-based? Waggle to trigger a collider that rolls for damage? Basically this. Also getting stuck on things isn't necessarily bad as it means small weapons are better suited for small spaces and you have to be careful how you use them. With physics based weapons you can do neat things like playing around with their weight and momentum.
As for guns you can compare pavlov with H3 to see what physics based guns means for the player. Although the guns are far easier to control and manipulate in pavlov, you can't do neat things like racking the slide of two pistols at the same time by rubbing them against each other.

Physics is obviously the best choice if you want the most immersion, but it is the toughest to get right when paired with AI. In the first place, the entire system Boneworks, Blade and Sorcery, etc developed took a lot of time and experience to get to where they were. Some part of it is physics but a lot of it kind of isn't, in order to make it feel good to use, and even then, there can still be problems in those systems.

Personally, I am in the camp of thought that we should simulate the virtual world with as realistic physics as possible, down to each of the muscle activations in the player character's body, while what we tune isn't the physics, but the way that the player's inputs translate into actions that the player character's body *attempts* to execute, and this can even be something that can change throughout the game as the player levels up. For instance, if you swing a sword, what would happen is that algorithms (perhaps ones that rely on deep learning to understand how you do it as an individual) detect and understand that your intention is to swing that sword, so it calculates the exact forces and muscle activations that would be necessary to naturally swing the sword the way you intend it to go. That translation system would hopefully be the best solution for current hardware to replace the natural feedback loop that our bodies in real life use in order to put just the right amount of force into an action.

And I also think that there should be able to be times where there are large discrepancies between your body and the virtual body. If we have to, we can just fade in a ghost body. What we should not do is keep pretending as if the player character is some unmovable object that can't be knocked over or beaten down or tied up or whatever. That kind of mindset ultimately limits the potential of VR, the kinds of interactions we can have, and the kinds of stories we can tell.
