VR isn't a gimmick, but it's been hamstrung by the "muh immersion" fuckheads that want to waste time trying to replicate other senses or full-body movement into games when there is absolutely no need to. Yeah, it's a neat little gimmick, but it wears off quickly and becomes a treadmill of increasingly more cumbersome and expensive technologies which pretty much require a dedicated room in your house to operate properly.

All you need for VR to be a success is cost effectiveness, ergonomics, and some goddamned games you can just sit on your couch and play with a controller - using head tracking for camera movement. Once you get that down and profitable, then move on to the more experimental shit.

What you end up with is a bunch of fly-by-night chinese companies making cheap shit like Job Simulator or Gorn that nobody really wants to play and can't sell the system - which by the way is anywhere between $400 to $1000 dollars.

If games like Resident Evil VII were the norm, and provided a good backbone of titles that people WANT to play, and which VR adds to immensely - the platform would be much more successful. Instead, most of the VR content for anything more than budget-tier indie shit is just separate demo modes for real games - partly because publishers don't want to waste the time really pushing the tech past the experimental phase until it's proven itself, and partly because the only affordable headset for most people is tethered and locked to a platform that can barely even do VR at all.

VR fags killed VR, by enabling a shovelware ecosystem while chasing bullshit immersion extremes like an addict that is neither really necessary or wanted at the end of the day.

AR suffers from the same problem that's currently killing VR under the guidance of "muh immersion" fags. AR is environment based, meaning that level design and pacing has to go out the window so that a game can use procedural generation to conform itself to an infinite amount of configurations of a more or less static space. VR, on the other hand, chasing after immersion requires room-scale VR - but that limits the game to being more or less room-scale in it's environment. You're either stuck in a single place flailing your arms like a retard, or teleporting between discrete places.

In either case, VR has the advantage since it can shut out the real world 100% and overlay whatever environment the designers choose - meaning they have far more control over the pacing, environmental challenges, enemy spawns, etc... all while keeping the environments evolving and changing to both lessen the monotony of the experience, and to slowly ratchet up the skill ceiling.

Although, because you're shutting out the real world on two primary senses, no VR solution should be without pass-through audio and cameras. Merely as a safety and convenience feature.

AR's place is in the draft-room and board room. Not in the living room.

I can't see myself upgrading from Index until a new major technology is out. Resolution cannot increase enough to matter without performance issues. The FOV increase of Index over Rift doesn't make a huge difference either, so anything short of full visual field is not worth it. I guess foveated rendering with eye tracking is the next thing, but I doubt it's coming in the next year.

I wouldn't expect a next gen headset before 2021.
Rift S is a good entry level headset. Easy setup, cheaper than the Index, easy access to exclusives, not a lot of hardware issues.
Index is a better headset with a better refresh rate, better tracking, better fov, higher resolution, less SDE, and finger tracking. It's hard to say it's necessary $600 better though, and early units have been having a lot of QC issues although mine has been fine so far. It's kinda hard to recommend unless you're sure you're going to spend a lot of time in VR.

To be honest both of these look kind of eh, especially from what I'm hearing about reloading/interactions, I only just recently played Robo Recall for the first time and didn't bother to finish it.

I got full body tracking when I got my Index in July. I enjoy it very much and it makes everything vrchat so much better.
I would say buy it now, since you don't knoe how long you need to wait for something new.
And If a better solution is released by Occulus I would probably buy that instead. But I'm not poor and don't consider VR that expensive.
If you have the money and spend more then 10 hours a week in VRC, go for it.

You can put one in the non-knife slot reload the one in your hand, then switch to the not loaded one from your pocket to reload both without giving up your knife. It does mean you have to always have one in your hand but unless you're going to pull the pin on a grenade, punch in numbers for planting the bomb, or switch to a back slot weapon you don't need both hands.

Stormland had some pretty bad optimization. I can hardly hold it together on high with no AA and that's with a 2080ti.
