Look at your monitor, think of how much of your vision it fills. Not all of it, right? Now move it closer until it does. A VR headset fills your entire vision (depending on fov, but at least 90 degrees of it) and is usually around 1440p. So no, VR desktop is worse than irl desktop, but you can still use in VR with certain apps which can be pretty handy.for checking discord or whatever.

I also went from cv1 to index. The headset itself is a definite upgrade in clarity, and the headphones and mic are definitely better. Going from OLED to LCD is a little disappointing for dark scenes but the index is still overall better. 144hz is nice and smooth. Tracking quality on lighthouses is basically identical to the 3 sensor setup. It is nice not having 3 extra USB ports and cables though, and not having to deal with hybrid tracker setup for vrchat.

On the other hand, I'm still bitter about the controllers. After 3 months I'm used enough to the knuckles, but I still miss the touch controllers. Finger tracking is too imprecise to be useful or immersive. Thumbsticks suck, I miss being able to hotswap AAs, etc etc. If I could use touch controllers with the index headset, I'd do it in a heartbeat.

I also miss Oculus dash (though I don't miss the other Oculus software running all the time). Steamvr desktop overlay is so inferior in comparison. Ovrtoolkit is a pale comparison (and costs $10).

Having used Vive, Index and Quest I've had most trouble doing gestures with Index. Doing facial expressions was easiest with Vive as you just slide your thumb around the rings making combinations and quick switching straightforward and doing hand gestures was easiest with Quest as you just do the gesture but the controller is very discrete about which buttons you're pressing or touching.

Index allows the most options but still feels clunky to use as it doesn't give proper feedback from your grip fingers, you literally can't do the neutral cupped hand and have to fuck around with the finger bones to make them look less jank.
