Well, you do get a copy HL:A bundled with the controllers now, so it's probably worth it. I went from the CV1 -> Index so I never used the wands extensively, but a friend did the upgrade and said the tracking on the controllers is better, even with the same 1.0 lighthouses.

Why did people hate the original Vive strap again? It's pretty lightweight. It's not as secure as DAS, but actually it makes Vive rather easy to take on and off.

Oh yeah I heard about that, gotta try it sometime. Still, the whip in that is more physically based I think I remember? My problem with how 3D castlevanias or ripoffs of it do the whip is that they don't feel the same as what was being done in the 2D games. That is, whips are treated in the 2D games more like they're spears being thrust out. It wasn't realistic, but it was fun, and whipping felt like a very precise attack. In 3D games, I think a better equivalent would be something like a whip with a rigid backing, so that when you whip, it unrolls, and then it locks when it becomes straight. Or perhaps a magical weapon or sci fi weapon of some kind, that extends out like a sword, and which releases energy in the direction of the blade when you create enough momentum in that direction. So you would essentially be performing the animation the Belmonts do in the 2D games. And the "energy" attack could also be in a very precise beam-like form that extends out to a certain distance.

Hard to compare it to any flat game where you're just hitting a button on a controller. It's still pretty gamey FWIW. There's and AOE effect at the end of the whip based on how far you let it go before pulling it back. But it feels really satisfying in a way recoilless guns and waggling melee doesn't.

It does roll out in a straight line in recroom. You can jerk it back to make it whip at any point, max distance giving the most damage and splash. If you whip something and the tip touches it before you pull back, it sticks in place a bit but I think doesn't give you the max damage even if you're at the right distance. Nothing wrong with standing over something and constantly whipping it with short strokes though.

Will Valve develop a wireless adapter add-on for the Index in the future or is that out of the question?

My PC is absolute shit by modern standards, so I don't expect it to run any VR games at all without some upgrades, and I'm at the point where I think I'm going to have to upgrade to a newer motherboard and CPU which is far too much money for me to do right now, especially with VR hardware on top of that.

Because of this I am looking at the Oculus Quest. Is it as great as it looks playing games standalone? I've heard a lot of complaints about comfort, is it really an issue? Can it be fixed cheaply?
I also have a PS4 already and could get a PSVR for around £250 (Quest costing me around £400) is the PSVR a valid option anymore? Is it more comfortable? Am I missing anything vs the Quest?
Also how is piracy with the Quest? I know you can sideload but I also hear that you can get you Oculus account banned. Does this ban the headset itself? Or can I just make a new account? What is the account even for? Just the store?

Thinking about upgrading from the OG Rift (the one before S with the touch controllers) to Index but unsure about a couple of things. Are the black levels on the index really that shitty/noticeable? Also I heard Index had a lot QA issues with headset cables breaking on the inside or something, controllers messing up, etc. Has that all been worked out now?

I went from the CV1 to the Index. The black levels are worse and you'll miss the contrast of the rift, but the increase in resolution and FoV makes up for it. It's a really good headset.

You'll miss the touch controllers though, the knuckles just aren't as good of a design. I think most of the QA issues have been sorted out, given people's second set of controllers after RMA are good, but it still feels like a bit of a roll of the dice.

Kind of. The index comes with 2.0 base stations that are only compatible with 2.0 trackers. You can get 1.0 base stations (default vive ones) and use those instead of the 2.0 base stations for an index. You can tell the difference between trackers because the 2.0 ones have a blue triangle in the middle while the 1.0 ones have a grey triangle.
Basically the 2.0 base stations only work with 2.0 gear but 1.0 base stations works with both 1.0 and 2.0 gear.

Id say it's worth it, I didn't have many issues regarding overheating or disconnecting.
The only problem is (unless Vive Pro with lens mod is much better, but I doubt it), Vive itself isn't exactly worth it anymore, compared to Index for me.
I still use mine for non-competitive games, but I'd rather just use smooth turning in Pavlov/Onward rather than sacrifice my screen clarity.
If Valve Cosmos+SteamVR feels like competitor to Index, it might be worth it if you've got wads of cash to burn. Night and day difference. Index is like you're sitting a little too close to your monitor, or have a 1080p screen despite sporting 2k or 4k size, you can notice the pixels, but it's not a big deal when you look for them.
Vive is like wearing a fencing mask. Half of the H3VR guns are mostly useless in it if they don't have big/highlighted iron sights. I still struggle with some smaller ones like AKM has on Index, but it's still possible.
Elite Dangerous, Assetto Corsa were borderline unplayable on Vive, I needed to lean to read anything, on Index I can finally relax and only lean for the more extreme cases of small text.

Since the Rift S seems to be accepted as the mid level entry point, I'm thinking of taking the plunge this weekend. Do we think $350 is as good as it gets, or will there be something killer come Monday or Christmas?

The game is still evolving but it's really fun.
"Rogue lite" single life and there's some randomness to enemy generation and map layout, and the combat they do.
There's powerups and I've been having fun trying to min-max the game but I may have hit my limit with the items I'm using and need to spec out differently which might take a while.

I still haven't cleared the second boss fight, it's legitimately hard, but not in the way that makes you feel like the game is screwing you over.

Every time you mess up is totally your own fault.

Sword strikes feel good and when you make wide swings it does more damage. It's just plain good.
I think a couple of other anons from here were playing it. They make good use of full locomotion and teleport by making charge dashing a game mechanic, you basically smash into them.

the story and voice acting are good, and it makes use of the index controller's force sensors for some interactions which is pretty cool.
because of the more "arcady" style action sequences you don't feel screwed by physics combat. It's gewd and feels good to play. Easy to drag VRlet newbs into over the holidays too.

The controllers have beaming lights on them you need specifically lit space to use it "properly", controllers are super short battery life, the inside out tracking it has is horrid and VRFPS is unplayable with it as well as beat saber. The halo strap is absolutely awful. Watch the last video the guy compares tracking between the rift s and cosmos its night and day. They should have released this product in its current state and its made it obvious HTC doesn't give a shit about their consumer level client base.
