What's the best controller on the VR market? There isn't one, they all suck. CV1 at least worked, Rift-S/Quest Touch lack inputs and have shitty tracking rings, Vive/Index ones are trash, and WMR ones are tied to inferior platforms. They're all shit. Sorry for ever mentioning a controller I actually liked using and didn't wonder what issue will pop up next. If Valve and Oculus joined forces to make a controller it could actually be sturdy and well designed like CV1 with being comfy like Knuckles are.

Carmack is legendary but if you follow his tweets and watched his Oculus talks, he does reveal that he doesn't actually do a whole lot of actual product development himself. Rather, he functioned more like a consultant that developed some small experimental things and only helped on various projects instead of be a lead on them. I don't see a lot of the actual features and functionality implemented as too unreasonable for today's talented programmers to be able to achieve. It was just a matter of throwing enough of the right men at the job.

And that's why Abrash, who is also similarly legendary as a programmer though with less fame than Carmack, believes that Facebook will be the ones to usher us into the next generation of VR. Because they have invested into it so much and are investing even more into it as time goes on, while the same level of investment by other companies doesn't seem to be happening from what we can publicly tell. And from what we can tell, it certainly seems to be the case that no one else is really dumping as much money into both short term VR projects like Quest and long term projects like varifocal tech. There are hints from stuff like patent publications, but Oculus seem to be leading there too. Anyone who has investigated the industry deeply would come to the same conclusion as he did, it is just logical.

Unfortunately, that does mean that Oculus could have a potential monopoly. We'll just have to hope by then that competitors won't be too far behind and will have spun up larger teams and planned ahead, perhaps in secret.

Yup, it's quite possible.
There's the cheap-o half-assed way of using the Kinect or options like it, but that generally requires you to be always facing the camera as well as having some very odd results when you lay down or get low to the ground.
The majority here use what is called a "Hybrid" system, where it has the Rift tracking for the headset and controllers, but then also using lighthouses and Vive trackers for the hips and legs. While it works just fine it's a bit of a headache to setup as well as has its own jank during use since you're trying to slam two different tracking spaces together.

There's also the far-in-the-future option of waiting for Oculus to do their supposed camera-based full body, but who knows when that'll be done. Not too sure why you'd want to do it on the quest personally, but I haven't kept up on the capabilities of it.
