I'd say that about the Odyssey+, but the Rift S is pretty good. The tracking issues that it had near launch got worked out, so that's pretty much on par with with the OG Rift's tracking now.
If you have to have the best thing available, Index is still it, I'm just not sure it's worth the extra money and indefinite wait for most people right now.

index has superior screen, controllers, tracking and sound

rift has better lenses (no glare/god rays), ease of use and installation (no basestation shenanigans, and most of everything just works, while using the index means you're going to have to fuck with modifying files and installing unofficial patches or changing your bindings for any game that wasn't updated for it and then you won't be able to crack some the games from the occulus store because revive is shit)

as an index owner, I feel like the 600+ bucks I paid extra were maybe not as worth it as it seemed at first, though the experience is probably miles away still, all the fucking tinkering you have to do to make some of the games run flawlessly is a huge kick in the shin, and then the controller's binding UI is a fucking insult for the price you pay for them (on top of having to RMA one of the controllers and one of the base stations within the first month I had them, but maybe they fixed the hardware by now)

if oculus was proposing a 600-700$ headset with a good enough screen, 120 (if not 144hz) and better audio than the rift S, I would say it would be absolutely retarded to go for the index at that point

the gimmicks of the knuckles are pretty cool on paper, but it's not like you can really ever use it, especially considering it's a gimmick that probably nobody else is ever going to adopt, meaning games will never focus their functionalities on it (because it would mean cutting themselves off of oculus' market), so, 140~$ per controller? is that REALLY worth it? I don't feel like it (especially considering the issues I described in my original post)

I still feel like the UI for them feels like some mod rather than anything official, at least you can change them from desktop but fucking hell it's a pain in the ass to do still (why the hell does steamvr has to be running to change them?)

and in the new steamVR beta, they felt the need to change the keyboard system and replace it with a virtual keyboard you can only type ONE fucking key at a time with a single controller, and not only that, but the fucking keyboard is lacking basic punctuation like '?' and ';' and anything in between

Honestly if all you want to do is VRChat, Quest probably is the one to get if you setup wireless streaming and do the various comfort mods and battery pack attach. But if you're considering VR JUST for VRChat, then you'd probably be considering FBT, in which case, Vive is the only one to get until they fix the drift issues on Index.

Steamvr's overlay is generally trash, yup. I had to make do with OVRToolkit for a while, but I've been pretty happy with XSOverlay recently. It's the closest you can get to oculus dash on steamvr nowdays.

at 280$ you'd think that would come included with the thing, hell, I could understand within the first few months it launched, but knowing valve it probably won't even happen (t. long term steampad user)

on the same vein, a way to 100% emulate oculus touch controllers with the knuckles fucking never, hell, even giving us the option to BIND touch's output in their UI would make a world of difference for those older games that will probably never get updated for index

"Press R" is an abstraction necessary for a simpler control scheme. It wouldn't be a translation to M&KB for Pavlov because it doesn't use that abstraction. Saying a keyboard is better because you can press R is like saying FPS games are better on a console because of the generous auto-aim a controller requires.

Actually being able to hold and manipulate things with your fingers would have obvious gameplay implications, like the triggers, fire selectors on guns, grips on bladed weapons, throwing balls, musical instruments and keyboards. It's really hard to think of how to do any of that well without haptic feedback though. Gimmicks like sign language for magic has already been done in demos, and you could probably make a decent magicka-like game out of it.

VR UI manipulation wouldn't be too bad with controllerless tracking, though again the lack of haptic feedback would be hard to work around. and of course the finger tracking would be more gesture tracking, like pointing or flicking the index finger around to scroll. Would be convenient to not need a controller though, like imagine a RTS or god game, gesturing to select units, pointing where to go, grabbing the world to move around, etc.

it's not so much what you can use it for. it's just not having controllers and coming up with a language for non-controller gestures that feels natural and intuitive universally, not on a game by game basis. The Power Glove came with a book to program gesture controls for the 8 NES buttons that was different for every game and didn't work for most.
