I've got a 3D printer, a full electronics repair station, a fuckton of supplies and almost any parts that I need; VR headsets get overhauls so often that I want something upgradeable and cheap, so it seems like building my own is the best route.

Has anyone here done anything of the sort? How much did it cost? How hard was it?

You mentioned "VR headsets get overhauls so often that I want something upgradeable and cheap" so I assumed you were talking about headsets like the Rift or maybe even Index and wanted to build something like that except you could have the advantage of switching out parts. But since you're goal is actually really low, then sure, it's definitely possible to build. I would just not say that wanting something "upgradeable" should be part of your motivation, simply because better than Cardboard and PC connected still isn't really good enough for doing much.

How do I deal with the in-game camera in VRchat while wearing VR? I use small characters and I can't select the buttons at all. I don't know if it's the in-game height that is off or what but even is I slowly scroll up after "hitting" a button, it just jumps off them and I can never get shots I want.

Any way of improving on this? I love the feature, I just wish I could push the buttons.

The deeper I get into udon, the more I realize that it's just as broken as the trigger system + animation states + UIButton hackery of the old SDK, but in new and exciting ways. For wooden poker, I've given up on using the native udon "syncrhonize position" to sync all 136 tiles reliably. Even if the shuffle "works", eventually some tiles will randomly explode on somebody's client, and there's no way to reconcile it.

So, I've been trying to do physics syncing through the other mechanisms exposed to udon. I first tried putting an synced Vector3/Quaternion on every single tile, and having some events locally to periodically check and reconcile the individual tiles according to their owner's transform. However, udon balks at syncing 136 of those; There's some lower-level "Death run detected" in the networking code that prevents a client from spamming the network with those events. 136 synced udon objects is too much for it. Even the mere presence of that many synced variables chokes it.

So, I've been trying to pack in the variables to a few synced strings instead. I got it to work for a few tiles with naive encoding (toString essentially), but due to this limitation, you can only sync 64ish characters in a single string:

So assuming a fancier byte-packing serializer and deserializer. WIth full float precision, that's 136 * (3 position floats * 3 rotation floats) * 4 bytes/float = 3264 bytes, or about 51 synced strings. That _may_ be under some "death run" detection limit, but it's still a lot. Might need further compression or limited tile locations like "in player N's hand, in discard N, etc etc".

Why is dynamic lighting so hard for shaders to get right. We all know that if the map maker adds a second dynamic light at the opposite direction for ambient/rim light it will make the world super lag tier. Anyone know the solution for this either map side or avatar shader side?

Yes. The problem is that if synced variables exist on UdonBehavior at all, udon will immediately try to sync them, and there's no way at runtime to toggle whether the variables are synced, or force sync at some point.

I did find https://github.com/FairlySadPanda/UdonStringEvents , which is essentially the same strategy I'm converging on, which packs in events into small synced string variables in order to power more complex behavior. I still need to get around the fact of syncing (uncompressed) 3.3KB of state.

When you hit the menu button, the laser that your other hand emits is the same raycast as what vrchat uses to detect which button you're hitting. So if you're trying to hit a button, you can quickly toggle on the menu to get your hand position and laser right, and eventually you'll get a feel for it.

I'm not sure what all you do with it but is there a reason you cant have all that but just have the tiles settle into a quantized position once you place them? Have them subtly correct themselves after you let go inside the correct collider region. Otherwise they can be normal physics object. If you're just limiting that to the pool, discard, and hand I wouldn't think that'd take away too much and would prevent the overhead sync issues from those tiles.

My cheap ass cheap ass is using an xbone kinect for full body, and despite the skeleton looking quite fluid and responsive, actual performance in game is laughable.

Just "walking" or lifting my feet up is nowhere near as responsive as the skeleton preview, and I've tried driver4VR and Kinect2VR with similar results.

Been tempted to buy some decent LED bracelets to do color tracking but I'm afraid performance will be similar.

What do you mean by fluid and responsive? The skeleton has around150-200ms of latency and you can see that in the preview. If you mean vrchat isn't tracking your limbs as well as the skeleton preview, that depends as much on the avatar and IK, since vrchat is only told foot and hip locations from the kinect skeleton just like all other kinds of fbt.

Project to ditch udon's network sync entirely is going pretty well. Instead, I pack the positions/rotations into synced strings, update the strings, then on the client, unpack the strings back into poses and force the (local) gameobjects positions to match. I implemented some bitpacking code to get each tile down to 7 chars (14 bytes), which is still not as efficient as it could be, but a lot better than naive string encoding.

Udon will only sync a string somewhere less than 56 chars long (i think it's maybe 32, guessing. So, I have multiple synced strings, and I slowly iterate over the 136 tiles within those strings, so in theory all of the tiles will eventually get through. However, synced strings aren't completely reliable, so if you rotate them too fast, the clients will "miss packets" essentially. Which is what you see in webm related, where most of the tiles get properly updated, but a few are stuck for a long time.

But, it's all definitely better than relying on vrchat's own sync. I "just" need to implement other basics techniques of physics syncing, like prioritizing moving objects, and also reimplementing the ownership system (right now, master owns all the tiles). https://gafferongames.com/post/snapshot_compression/ is a good general guide for this sort of thing.
