Mechanics wise it's more polished than Stand Out. It's one notch less janky, but at the same time it's also less responsive (Stand Out is much more optimized, it just werks, if you time your games right you are constantly playing, unlike Virtual Battlegrounds, which basically require hundreds of players so you never end up in a empty lobby - not happening).

You can spectate, you can go back to a new lobby right away and then you get to decide if you wait for other players or start right away. There's a comp mode without bots and spectating, dunno how it works. For now it looks like a decent enough jankcore brought to minimum 2020 requirements. Climbing feels good, sprinting and swimming feels good, there's some jank with attachements, but generally they feel fine too. It needs some gamemodes which spawn like 10% of the weapons and health, because you usually end up fully loaded after the first house you visit.
Not sure about the netcode and everything.

I'm going to give it a try now, so you'll soon hear how it performs on an FX-8350 for any of you worrying about performance.

From my observations it's not so bad, if you get caught in the open you're probably dead, if someone gets a jump on you, you're probably dead no matter which gun they have. There's no armor (yet), and you can't spam apples to your mouth as quickly as in Stand Out, there's a 1HKO semi-auto skill cannon, it doesn't spawn as often as other guns, but it's there. It uses projectiles, but either I'm bretty gud or they travel fast enough that you can dispose of anyone in your sight if you have an M4 with an eotech and do arm stock.
Overall I think it has potential to be fun, but I don't see it ever having Pavlov numbers so the potential might be lost, unless they add a King of the Hill or TDM mode.

So I downloaded and played Virtual Battlegrounds.
In its native SteamVR mode it was unplayable, I couldn't even get a decent framerate in the little shooting-range/lobby area the game has, which is very small. I went into an actual match and it was as expected, totally unplayable and headache inducing.

However, I didn't cry too much, I popped on the discussion boards and what do I see pinned at the top? "-vrmode oculus" as a launch option.

So I restart the game in oculus mode and the improvement was immediate, framerate in the lobby was fine didn't hitch at all. Went into a game however and the framerate, while not nearly as bad as before, was not great, I had to turn render quality to 0.9x and LOD to 50 in order to play reasonably and then it was still hiccuping every now and then. This is a very early version though so perhaps some optimisation will come in the future?

From the lobbies it looked like there was around 100 people online, I don't know how that ranks in terms of other similar style VR games.

If I learn to make models from scratch I can see being able to apply it elsewhere.

However this whole setting up bones and such feels like it doesn't have any good application outside of the game. Not to mention I have a feeling you can't really earn good profits from model creation in VRchat because it's too easy to rip and steal stuff and no one commissions enough of custom models. I just don't see a good market in VRchat, even if people are into it. Few thousand Steam players seems like very few especially since most of them are teenagers with no money and this game kind of repels older audiences who have spending power.

how tough is it to start with just a body mesh and rig it to work with vr chat? I'm used to mmd models that already come with a rig and are basically done besides minor tweaks. I will purposefully stay away from the color black. I see it overly used in VRchat because the people who do the models have no knowledge of texture work, so they make everything black to hide this, or pure white.

I did find this one random Puck ornament in a random world. It's inhabitants made the world in 2018 and it looks like it has never been used but I happened to randomly jump around and see this. It's not exactly great and again, overuses the color black and adds some generic devil wings from another model. It annoys me that people do this kind of stuff and my plan is to do something completely different. Might take me weeks or months, because I'm starting from the basics. I can draw so that will help for sure. Not well, but well enough to make fan art and create a model from that, from scratch. I am doing this purely for education, fun and non-profit with respects to the original.

It's not that bad, but that point I would actually try getting someone's used Vive Pro (headset only). That way, you'll have an OLED headset which is invaluable for dark games.
Alternatively, get a Quest, since that's also OLED and can provide it's own unique advantages. If you have a good wireless router, it can potentially be a wireless headset working with your PC and that's a very interesting experience.
