I got pretty good Meshroom results with about 250 photos, not amazing results but still a lot better than Display.land. Processing was an overnight job though and the file size was significantly larger than Display.land. I wouldn't recomend using Meshroom unless your phone can't handle Display.land

In terms of overall quality, you're entirely right. Apart from the occasional VR game though, one of the things I'm most looking forward to is watching movies. Watching one on my brother's samsung Gear was my first VR experience and always stuck with me. However, the thing I remember most about trying the original Vive a few years back was the heavy SDE and distractingly bright blacks. The Quest is the perfect answer to both of those.
Basically, I asked myself "If money didn't matter and I owned both the Quest and the Index, which would I use to watch movies?" The answer was pretty clear, and it's supported by a large number of the reviews I read and watched about the two headsets.I didn't think I'd actually end up buying both headsets, but that's what happens when the govt hands me a $1200 check for VR funding.

You don't need any software to do FBT with Vive/Index/Pimax, but you should be using advanced settings anyway.
You can plug all dongles into a single USB 2.0 hub; they use very little bandwidth.
They may need to be spaced out by 1.5 meters each if the channels conflict.

It isn't really that hard. It's daunting at first but there are so many tools out there that make them very easy to use. For what you want, you'll need blender and unity at minimum. Everything with blender can be done with cats plugin in a couple of clicks. Everything in unity can be done by dragging and dropping into slots.

Percussion is hard to do since there's no force feedback. You could align some practice pads to your VR space, but even then I don't think the controller tracking is accurate enough to track velocity of tight drum licks.
Theremin is about the only existing instrument that translates well to current VR. But of course there's plenty of design space for new VR specific instruments. Doing something more with controller rotation than what a theremin could detect, for instance, and adding head orientation as an input.

Reddit is doing some massive damage control, they're tiny babbies compared to how many RMA mentions you'll get around here. Just ask any Index VRFPS regular, they all rack up RMAs to the point they buy spares to avoid RMA downtime. As for the American thing, we'll see how Valve acts for 1st wave claims, which are running out of warranty in 8 days.

RMAs were pretty flaky in the beginning. Not as bad as HTC, but Valve didn't anticipate their shit to break down after a month, which it does. They figured it out now, so at least RMAs are less of a pain.
As for hardware. Generally each component has flaws, lighthouses can break down for no reason, headsets' cable is the weak point so make sure you treat it well, speaker/screen issues are more rare.
Index Controllers for sure will squeak and for sure will drift if you use the thumbsticks. Other issues are more of a lemon basis, but don't be too hard on the touchpad and grip. For some people trigger gives out earlier than thumbstick. Expect stuff like touch sensors to go haywire or unexpectedly stop working in buttons/thumbstick. Generally if you don't want to RMA, don't ever go Valve.

It's so bad I have to talk about the parts seperately.
The good:
The lighthouses are solid. You have the rare failure, but it's rare. In vrg collectively we have hundreds and hundreds of the valve V2 lighthouses. I've only heard of one, maybe two failures. Good odds on these.
The bad:
Lots of people have had headset issues, but this tends to be not common. Like 5%. Some people have had headsets come broken, etc. One part that tends to go is the headphones. Still uncommon to have issues, though. Hundreds of headsets, maybe a dozen or so broken ones.
The Ugly:
The controllers. The fucking controllers. They're fine, except the thumbstick. The thumbstick will break. 100% failure rate. Between about 50-100 hours of use, the potentiometer in the stick wears down and the stick becomes loose and unuseable. It starts with drift, and then you lose range. Every single one. The only factor is how much you use the thumbstick.
Shame since they're reasonably solid otherwise. Can take more of a bash than the vive wands, but not indestructable like oculus ones.
The headset cable also has a high failure rate. I hesitate to call it 100%, but after about 8 months of use it will die, and you will need a new one.
Good news: Valve RMA might be the best in the world. Very little fucking you about, easy to get shit replaced.

And the cause is, in almost all cases, the little plastic clip on the headset that cable is hooked in. It has no stress relief, so over time, the cable gets worn down there. This is an issue easily prevented by the user putting on their own solution to a strain relief, like a rubber band, or extra tubing/padding. I foresaw this before people even started having these kinds of issues on Rift CV1, and my CV1 cable till this day is in great condition.

I have one right controller where the thumbstick refuses to break. In my cable failure I couldn't actually locate a failiure point. When it starts to fail it gets fuzzier and you get more pops. Near the end of its life I fumbled around to see what part of it was the most sensitive to being bent, and couldn't isolate an area where fiddling made it better. Temperature also appeared to have an effect - in warmer weather it was worse, but this might be complete coincidence. I'd have to warm the cable with a hair dryer or something to test this.

I've had zero issues with headset and controller tracking after half a year of use, even in games like Beat Saber, Boneworks, and Pavlov. I heard bad things about the tracking in the O+ but I'm not exactly sure what these people are doing wrong to get those issues.

Finally got my Quest today. It's my first VR headset, only experience was trying the Gear and original Vive 4 years ago for a couple of hours.

I don't know if this is related but I notice things up "close" are perfectly clear but objects in the "distance" are pixelated and hard to see. This is kind of a pain to navigate. I can open virtual desktop windows, but they keep the oculus menu open at the same time. This causes the windows to intersect and makes both of them unreadible. The only fix is pinning the virtual desktop and then closing the oculus menu (because if you close the menu without pinning the desktop every time, it closes the desktop too). The virtual desktop windows also have the above problem with clarity. At large scale, it's very clear and easy to read text, but scale that down just a little bit and suddenly all the text is blurred out.

I've heard plenty of complaints about it being front heavy, but my impression is that the straps are just shit. No matter how I adjust them, the back strap just doesn't reach the base of my skull to hold the headset in place. Without reaching there, the weight naturally drags it up over my hair because nothing is holding it in place. On the front side, the nose hole and low fit (edge below my cheek bones) means there's nothing to hold it up. While that means no pressure (good), there's no position that actually feels comfortable or natural.
Those are my only gripes so far. Everything else had been great. The colors especially are a massive improvement over the old Vive. I hated how bright the blacks were during loading screens and dark scenes and told myself years ago I'd only buy an OLED headset when they were good enough.
I've heard it recommended to run the Quest with virtual desktop for almost no latency on PC games, but is that virtual desktop (the built-in option) or Virtual Deskstop (the paid app)?

That's mostly because distant objects take up less pixels overall, as well as any high-resolution details getting aliased and thus looking more obviously "pixelly". On index, while SDE is almost entirely gone (seeing outlines of individual pixels), aliasing of almost-straight lines is very obvious, and the only way to fix it currently is cranking up supersampling, at the expense of framerate.

I did now. The VD I mentioned in that post is the built-in one from Oculus Link. Running Virtual Desktop (the paid app) is giving me wonderful visuals. All the pixelization is cleared up, so I guess the effect I saw was actually just the video compression of Oculus Link.

Yeah it's honestly a really good cable, which is to be expected given the price. However we'll need to see just how long it can hold up. Hopefully it's as durable as any other cable, assuming you're careful with it and give it enough stress relief, especially at the cable clip where it can easily kink. I've designed and printed a shell to go around the body of the quest and cover up most of the disgusting fabric skin on it. Is this fabric coating common on all headsets? It seems like it just makes it a massive pain in the ass to keep it looking nice.

cloth can be a pain in the ass to work with. ive been trying to reproduce my one good skirt's setup. my main issue with my bad cloth skirts is they fold into themselves really easily -- my 'good' one doesn't and seems to fold at a more gradual angle rather than a harsh angle. i think it has to do with the way the vertices are setup -- decimating this down from 4k down to about 800 polys got it working well. 4k is a lot anyways probably. my 'good' skirt is 1400, decimating this one down to merely 1400 doesnt help, so depends. running a little bit of red between the legs in the front helps keep it down when im reclining back, too.
these are with short skirts too so im sure messing with a longer skirt is another ballpark
