Do not worry, as long as you're willing to keep buying new devices, each new generation from now on should be a magical leap forward from the last.
>Gen 2 [We are here]: Wireless headsets.
>Gen 3 [Quest 3]: Focal distance simulation which necessarily solves eye tracking robustly, improved FOV, AR.
>Gen 4: True light field displays with 210 degree FOV, eye tracking carried over from gen 3.
Display tech is now almost mature and advances merely reduce size and weight. Further generations are speculative.
>Gen 5: Clumsy body suits that allow the senses of touch, smell and taste. Attempts at fixing the suits to robotic arms in room scale VR.
>Gen 6: Centimeter scale foglets replace robotic arms, allowing activities like swimming and martial arts with holodeck like safety features.
>Gen 6: Bodysuits mature into a very thin skin that can stimulate nerves directly. Foglets are now millimeter scale.
>Gen 7: Neuralink delivers the MMI, but it's discovered that the brain prefers visual input via existing nerves and the Neuralink is used mainly for output.
>Gen 8: Initial matrix like tech is developed but it requires cutting into the spinal column, optic and auditory nerves and most people won't go to that length only to suffer from muscle wasting.
>Gen 9: Brains in vats for disabled people and a few crazy enough to abandon their body voluntarily. These people enjoy a perfect matrix like experience.
>Gen 10: GitS style cybernetic bodies solve the reluctance to jump into Gen8 or Gen9. VR life starts seeping into the real world.
