I bought an index like a week ago; but now the visor can't be updated.

It works well, it is all fine, but it can't update. The first udpate right on it's first install went fine, and the visor keeps working fine, but since yesterday a new update has been released for the visor firmware and whenever I try it, it keeps getting stuck on the first step and telling me that the device could not be updated

Here's my short experience with the HTC Vive Pro 2. Before ordering it, I wanted something that would be sort of future proof. The headset that I had and still have is the OG Vive fully modded with wireless and gearvr lenses ect. What was bothering me on that headset was the screen door effect. I couldnt see for very far before things would be just a couple of pixels wide. The VP2 was appealing because of its wireless compatibility and high res displays. Everything on my vive could be easily transferred to the VP2. Everything worth fixing on the headset like swapping the headband with the DAS, new microphone, and facial interface and counterweight battery. So thats what I did. When i got everything sorted and fitted and adjusted, the first thing I noticed was the aspect ratio of the lenses. It felt strange being able to see much wider than before. But it once i got more used to it, it was much better than other headsets I've tried and ofc much better than the vive. The displays resolution was extremely good even hampered by the wireless. But it was held back by two things. The lenses design, being stacked fresnels, caused a lot of god rays and glare. Combined that with LCD and it was like boost in resolution was not as noticeable. Scenes in my vive just felt more vibrant with its OLEDs. Yes I could see more in the VP2 but it was like looking though dirty lenses. Apparently its better than the index in terms of color and glare/god rays, but I just couldnt get used to it yet. With the modded gearvr lenses on the vive, everything is crystal clear, its just the display is low res with screen door. So I'm returning my VP2 after only having it for 4 days. So i'm currently looking into getting a vive pro and then modding it with gearvr lenses to get a higher res experience but at a much clearer view.

Setup: Great, easy to do, just don't love the software Vive Console.

Design & Ergonomics: Bit outdated by now, but still one of the most comfortable headsets to me. But why does it get so hot at the top? Very 'uncool'.

Display: Significant upgrade, especially to Vive Pro 1. I think HP Reverb G2 is better, though, as it's able to keep better edge to edge clarity, and has a bit larger sweet spot. But not a dealbreaker. It's a good display IMO.

Lenses: Letdown. Lots of glare, but mostly noticeable only in high contrast colors like menus. In MOST VR games, you'll forget about this, unless you're super sensitive to it.

FOV: Thin VR cover = 115H, 97V perceived FOV for me. Great. Just the nose flaps make it less comfortable. In the video, I show you a comparison of all my measured FOV with multiple second gen headsets. If you're interested ;-)

Audio: Meh, weird buzzing noise, not sure if defective.

Performance: Good, better than Reverb G2.

Vive Wireless Adapter: Good, but a shame we don't get full resolution or refresh rate.

Conclusion: I don't dislike it but the price doesn't justify its value. Wish HTC would invest in content rather than expensive hardware...

Unity doesn't auto save like that, I don't think. But what it does do, is it is modifying files in the project browser permanently. There are two ways,
If you want to retain eye tracking you must print a special gearVR adapter that fits from the inside so you need to disassemble the entire HMD which is riskier.
The second method I read about involves doing that same shit as vive pro by ripping out the eye tracking (not reversable because you end up cutting the wires). I am not sure if you the eye tracking wires are soldered or connected with headers, they might be removeable without damaging the product but that would also involve a lot of dissassembly..

This is the reason I bought the standard vive pro without eye tracking, I haven't seen any games that support eye tracking and if they do I'd just buy an eye tracking module for my pimax 8kx instead.

VR is a pretty niche market, and on top of that finding compelling gameplay in a VR format can be tricky. Sim games and Social games are natural fits, but those require money and resources that Indies can't really muster, and they're the only ones with the faith to really go all-in on VR so far. There have been a few runaway smash-hits like Beat Saber and SuperHot and H3 etc. but it's not like every developer can pull that off. Just look at all the VR competitive shooters we've seen and how many out of those gained any sort of traction. AAA devs could do it but most of them aren't willing to either take the market cut for making a VR title or put the faith into bolstering it with a truly VR focused AAA game. The only company who really went in on that is (big surprise) Oculus with the few AAA titles they've done (Lone Echo, Asgard's Wrath, Wilson's Heart etc.).

VR isn't dead, it's just still pretty early stages. Headsets are only recently starting to get close to something most people want, and at a price they're willing to pay, and for PC VR things like full wireless at those resolutions and that low latency is still very tricky. On top of that we're now contending with the question of whether the future of the format is standalone headsets with mobile hardware or high-end PC headsets, or if the market really has room for both. Plus for the past couple years we've had the pandemic basically throwing a wrench in the whole shebang making new hardware difficult to develop. It's growing pains, not death.

I honestly prefer my VP2 over the Index which I sold a month ago. The better colors, much better resolution, and improved FOV help a lot. If only they'd update the wireless adapter to go above 1632x1632 per eye. I'll probably go back to Valve though if they do make a new Index with a wireless adapter and neural interface headband.

I'll contest VRChat maps being the best new VR games as well, as both them and them and new standalone VR games are cheap and shitty, but the standalone games are slightly less cheap and shitty especially as they don't have the latency that VRChat has. It's not looking good otherwise though and as you said there really is nothing to incentivize getting a new headset when VRGOTY was probably Gorilla Tag. Higher budget games are all live service titles which need as many players as possible, ruling VR out for good at this point.

yes, it's worth it. Index tracking accuracy is to die for, it shomehow tracks flawlessly even if you occlude 90% of your controllers. What are some good games to show my normie friends who want to try out my Index?

Alyx is of course one of the most polished VR titles, but my concern with using it as a demo is that it doesn't really start picking up until a few hours in.
