So I don't have the money for a FBT setup.
I do have an old Kinect 360 and was thinking of setting up KinectToVR but my play space is the minimum 1.5m square of the Rift S, I can't move far enough away from the Kinect to get tracked, will buying the zoom lens for Kinect help with this problem, or will the lens distortion fuck everything up?

You can get lucky purchasing refurbished vive 2018 tracks and basestation 1.0s on the cheap and tundra trackers are available for purchase in feb/march 2022.

I don't live in the states and Vive stuff is still pretty pricey here, it's over 250 USD to get my hands on just 2 basestation 1.0s, base station 2.0s cost 450 USD for a set of 2.

VR is so niche here I had to import my Rift S directly from Oculus, Vive Trackers still go for 120 USD a pop and the tracker 3.0s are 145 USD each.

Prices are absolutely insane.

I got a Rift S mainly because the controllers take AAs and I have plenty of rechargeable AAs, trackers seems like sourcing replacements for the built in batteries will become a problem down the line? Especially if I have to import them.
That's also the main reason I got the Rift S instead of the Quest 1.0, battery lifespan.

Tundra is just a cheaper version of existing lighthouse tracking. You'll still need 2 basestations.They're basically just HTC 3.0 trackers but a bit better and cheaper, and 3.0s are basically 2.0s but a bit better and more expensive.

one of my lighthouses died when i moved, those things are fragile as fuck. just the blinking red light and an apparent motor failure.

Tundra still needs the base stations. They track exactly the same as Vive 3.0 trackers, but are a bit cheaper and smaller and come with some extra stuff that is nice to have.
SlimeVR is nice and all, but doesn't work as well as the lighthouse tracking methods.
None of the mentioned above trackers are available and it is a highly discussed topic on when they actually will be available.

If you can wait: Wait for Tundras. They are basically the same as HTC 3.0 trackers, but smaller and cheaper. The dongle (multiple trackers and only 1 dongle) is a huge QoL thing. Good luck having patience as nobody really knows when they will finally be open for public.
If you can't wait get the HTC 3.0 trackers. They are exactly the same tech as in tundra, but bigger and a bit more expensive. 1 tracker = 1 dongle, so prepare to get a good USB hub as well.

If you got no base stations whatsoever, get them. Every other solution is shit.
SlimeVR is floaty af, japanese 3-cam-tracking thing is nice but you slide around like a mad man.

A SOS CHRISTMAS MIRACLE OCCURED once again for this jolly season.
Everyone has managed to submit all the gifts and cards and such.
Gifts has been mostly packed in-game and was tested to be GPU instanced safe and effective.
Maps have been placed with working colliders

Due to the SOS feature creep of recent events and people voicing their concerns on it we've decided to reduce the scope and complexity of this event compared to the previous year.

Itinerary for the event proper is as follows:
1) SOS Map instance creation
(if overflow is needed, host gets a sub-host for a secondary map)
2) SOS Coin gathering
3) SOS Host micro speech (30 seconds)
4) SOS Special video by /vrg/ productions
4) SOS Gift opening ( w/ special music by meatman)
5) SOS Chill time
Note: SOS Main gift instance is streamed/recorded for posterity specially the gift opening sequence.

Many companies jumped off the hype train around 2018. There was a massive surge of new VR concepts and ports such as Skyrim, Fallout, Boneworks and PAYDAY. But most of the ports were bad or neglected, as a result they weren't super popular, and the dumbfuck managers took that as a hint "oh I guess people just don't want VR tee hee".
The PAYDAY devs literally only saw it as a cashgrab, the programmers themselves were excited to work on it but the higher-ups pulled the plug on it so hard that the VR port's shaders were broken for like a full year, resulting in fucked up normals on everything.
They're slowly coming back around, but it's slow. And even then, the fucking nigger PSVR and Oculus companies tend to snatch up things for exclusivity.

Also to clarify why boneworks is on that list, it was basically just a one-time tech demo. It's easily one of the better uses of VR mechanics that I've seen yet, but the content is a bit lacking. It hasn't had updates in years.
Also I gotta say, Blade & Sorcery's progress has been a little disappointing. I played it last week, and it's hardly any different from how it was in 2018. The only "real" new thing is dungeons, and even those are very lacking and are barely a demo right now.

Well in the end I think Boneworks did a better job at the tech than Alyx.
Alyx was cool and all, physics were alright, but the lack of a full body was disappointing. I'm tired of floaty hands.
Overall Alyx feels like a bit of a "VR newcomer" game and therefore strongly avoids involved combat with large enemy groups, has very artificial ammo scarcity to invoke a sense of danger even though you're never "really", and then has rather disappointing physics "puzzles".
That said, I think overall Alyx works better as a full "game".

Good question, most of the paid ones these days (the good ones at least) have you pay for the model itself, the model isn't actually available separately outside of a VRC context. That's why.
You can get started in avatar creation for free with any free model, including the vast trove of MMD's and XPS models that can be found all over the internet.

Difficult to say how hard. Avatars are art but also functional. You need skill in both blender and usually 2d digital art, along with general game character design and some basic unity know-how.

Price is sometimes related to effort and you can expect prices for original avatars several times the price of getting artwork commissioned. Say starting a couple of hundred $$$ and going up depending on how popular and skilled the creator is. iirc melody paid digi a few thousand for her vtuber avatar.

A lot of "custom avatar" work is kitbashing though and plenty of creators prefer to sell base models (see booth.pm) that the user can customize and finish. Think of it like how your character in an mmorpg shares a "base" with all the other people in the game, even if you can adjust the outfit and hair color and so on. Something like that will run you $10-50 with the downside (or upside) that you're going to look like everyone else using that model. Also there's much less shits given if you rip/redistribute a model hundreds of people already wear compared to ripping a unique commission job someone might have paid $500 for.

This is pretty much correct. But to clarify, basically most "advanced blender skills" and skill in 2D art can be thrown out the window if you just want to put an existing model into the game. At that point it gets more technical work than anything else, and it's how most non-artists start out with making avatars.
Kitbashing also doesn't need significant 2D experience. I know this because I'm practically incapable of creating 2D/3D art from scratch, but I can kitbash, retopo or fix up existing stuff just fine.

This also allows you to do smooth turning and a bunch of other stuff. But more importantly, you can rebind stuff ingame and force certain actions to always be on the left/right controller.
If you're on Index, make sure to get the Index bindings from Znix from the bindings menu. Then don't change any of the bindings in SteamVR, change them in the ingame controls menu instead. It's a bit wacky but you'll get used to it. You'll have to set your controls per "hand state". So if you always want to move with the left stick (Overkill's controls are retarded and put it on right stick sometimes), you'll have to manually override the left stick/left touchpad to "move" and the right stick/touchpad to something like "primary analog". It takes some fiddling but it works.

Replaying Alyx for the first time since launch and I'm getting much worse performance now than I did then. I get a really weird stuttering that reminds me of screen tearing when I walk around certain areas with this kind of lighting. This pillar in particular showcases how bad it can get. It's not quite an FPS drop, but more like the movement is stuttered. Has anyone else experienced this?

When she took one of the bars and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually to prevent any electrical infetterence, and then turned around and winked at me. I recommend just using Standard. Stop using toon shaders for worlds, you can achieve toony looks with baked lighting on Standard too. If I see one more world that uses Poiyomi with zero-width outlines for everything, I'm going to have a stroke

I've never seen a world using a toon shader that would have been good anyway. Nothing of value was lost.
There are a few other world creation shaders out there; Silent's filamented is mostly the same as Standard but has backface options and filters out the bright sharp edges that can be very distracting in VR.
