I use NIS style rendering at 0.67 and the index at 144hz around 2500px
This has a pretty massive benefit to performance if you're rocking anything less than a 3070 in certain situations.
Otherwise, block shaders most of the time.

VRChat is indeed cpu limited. Materials are the reason - once you hit a certain number of unique materials at a certain resolution, the game will tank.
However, the fact that it's also partially GPU (and then CPU to compensate) can be easily proved. Simply go to any map with 80 players where you're getting like 30 frames.
Open the steamvr dashboard. Look at your frames and the people moving around you.
144hz, perfect frames, no drops.
Ponder why that is.

i did this a while back and the framerate barely increased. i think what you're describing is what happens if you're running an older GPU like a 970 or if you're running out of VRAM.
you are NEVER going to hit 144fps with 80 people in the instance. the overlay might be shoving 144fps in your face, but the game certainly won't be pushing that framerate at all. there is simply too much going on in the main thread to hit 80 players and still keep 144fps, sorry.
the way i keep my framerates up in very large instances is decreasing supersampling to 1x because I'm partially VRAM-limited (older card), and using advanced safety to limit the number of meshes and materials people can use (without having to hide/fallback them altogether like VRC's dogshit perf rank system).

So mainly to explain just a little further -
"why my game slow?" comes in two flavors in the current situation in vrchat.
1) Shaders (in unity basically "material features") are set up by the cpu and passed to the gpu. SOMETIMES those features are handled by the gpu directly, but it's rare and those shaders tend to crash on amd or not work in vr. So, your cpu has to do a little work for every material in the scene.
2) Every unique material that isn't instanced is a set pass call. Anything above about 900 set pass calls is going to be pretty heavy.
3) An avatar with 4 materials and 2 different shaders with say, audiolink, by itself will be around 70 set pass calls when combined with a map with the procedural skybox, post processing, a reflection probe and no real time light. That's one player ranked "Good" in vrchat.
Most people are are way worse and then you have more complex maps with some realtime features and lots of materials themelves.
Let's add some reflections! Dynamic bones!
Suddenly, your cpu is out of cores and has to wait a cycle to set up new materials. Now it starts culling them. Now you're waiting on the cpu to draw a material every frame with a grab pass.
And you're not wrong about the vram limiting.

By disabling shaders on non-friends (especially audiolink and shaders like oyasumisan's glasses) you will vastly improve your frames.

While I do truly love what audiolink has brought to the community visually and most of the time it's fine, it has been pretty heavy for performance.

I'm 100% with you that, grab passes and material counts are the main issue right now, because you can't overcome the set pass call limits unless you have monster cpu/ram/gpu bandwidth on platforms released in 2021.
If vrchat implements something like directcache and directstorage someday, then things will change significantly. A URP Client in the future would be sweet too.
This game is just really heavy on the render job count and there's no real way around it. One thing that helps is people actually atlasing their worlds and not using full lighting features. Map makers should aim for like 2-4 PBR materials on the main meshes tops and try to get around 50 draw calls at typical viewing angles, tops, just to account for the avatar factor. That's what I do, anyway.

depends on what you mean with "full lighting features". realtime shadows on everything can eat a fat dick as far as I'm concerned, but some good reflection probe, light probe and baked lightmap usage is a must-have IMO.
also I agree that audiolink is a bit of a strain on the hardware, but that's largely because of how goddang limited Udon really is.
URP will have its ups and downs, I don't know if it'll be any better for performance but it sure will make it harder to make custom shaders. they tried their hardest to destroy interop by moving certain features to the project's pipeline (requiring you to finetune both the project and the shader, even though user content can't touch the project), and the node system is aids too.

This is true, but there's a limit when you hit a certain number of active materials in the scene that can not be overcome at all. It's a hard limit in the standard render pipeline.
However, when you vastly reduce the render resolution, (like by opening steam dashboard) doing that calculation on the -CPU- is significantly reduced TOO because the math is done per-pixel or per poly. The same thing happens with FSR. By reducing the work to render the frame by massively lowering the resolution, you give your cpu a break and put a little work on the gpu, which is what we want here.
It's a sliding curve though, you'll get peaks on both the cpu, gpu side: and also even the physical ram side. If your ram is low and slow, everything in vrchat slows to a crawl.
It should be obvious that an 4k resolution is more work to process per frame on the CPU to to then pass to the gpu per material than a 1080p one. Come on. use that big brain of yours.
Many material/shader features require lots of cpu time to prep per frame.
And yes, shaders that "bake" do help a lot.

Depends. If they're off, culled properly and locally (or no sync) synced it basically doesn't matter. Firing a single toggle to then do a bunch of actions controlled by animations are really, really cheap. Timeline is even cheaper when controlled with udon but I know one other person who has done that other than momo from vrc and he's a professional.

Mainly just look at things that run on the Update(). Try to turn those off when not needed, that's all. Cull the udonbehavior prefab by distance or a trigger volume or something, that's all.
Some do a lot of math and are heavy but most are not. Some run on update for no reason at all and just process constantly even if they're not being interacted with. They should be using lateupdate or lastupdate. Try to avoid a lot of stuff that runs on update() for no reason all the time basically.

If you're writing your own udon, try to make it all omnibus in one script, believe it or not, that's way better.

Here's an easy tip that might help: One of the most expensive and hidden quirks in unity is that if you are nesting scripted behaviors several hierarchy layers down, it makes things way slow to execute them, especially the first time. Every time they're called too, it takes quite a bit longer to fire and causes hitching. Not a lot of people know that.
Just by moving your stuff to the top of the scene hierarchy and not having it under other stuff like:

"Udon Stuff>Front room>Prefabs>pool table"
vs
"pool table"

will speed up unity itself significantly. It's just a quirk of the engine.

A full bake can make things slower too though, depending on how big it is.
if you can get everything into one lightmap texture at 4k, great. if there's like 14 of them... it's actually super bad, and might even be worse than using a single realtime light that completely culls the player and playerlocal layer, and only hits the map. Crazy, I know.
What's really crazy is doing no lighting calculations at all. Just use a gradient, fixed skybox and bake the lightmap straight into a single albedo texture in blender and just use that.
Ambient color neutral. Maybe make a light probe volume for the gradient ambient color but that's it.
Use a realtime directional light set to 0.01 intensity with no shadows (so that user shaders can get directional) but also keep your gameobjects static and use unlit texture as the shader, bake a reflection probe at a decent resolution since everything else is cheap.
I promise you'll be shocked by how many frames you get.
Import settings for everything, but especially textures and audio (pcm for short sounds, no compression) and using crunch compression on images in a format the target platform does efficiently is super important too for performance, probably more than most things we've mentioned so far.

This is not only mostly useless, but also somewhat detrimental for performance and is semantically incorrect. Most modern shaders these days can "guess" the light direction from the ambient lighting, and this looks and works really well. If people are still using Cubed's or Standard which can't do this, that's not my problem.
A single directional light like that will technically not add any drawcalls, but it will still uselessly add and use this data.
Also not to mention, the "guessed" ambient light direction used by many shaders will break if you have an actual directional light in the scene, which means that avatars close to a baked light source will now look incorrect.

that strongly depends on the world, your quality settings and lighting settings (such as the actual lightmap texture's resolution). 14 textures isn't necessarily all that much in a large and well-lightmapped world.

this is useless for anything except download size. textures live in VRAM non-crunched, even if crunched beforehand.

the rest of your suggestions boil down to "basically just make your world have a baked flat ambient color everywhere". I don't know if you realize this, but worlds should actually LOOK good, too. The lighting you described here is extremely basic and will not be attracting any users, and will not be gaining you many performance benefits either. light probes are already absurdly and extremely cheap because of the way they work.

Okay, that's nice, but there's lots of things that need the UNITY DEPTH BUFFER. The depth buffer is NOT activated without a directional light. You USED to be able to do it with post processing. This does not work in vr with 2019.4.31f1 Set it to "Not important" if you want so it's a vertex light, however unity ALWAYS renders a single directional light (but doesn't enable the depth buffer!) so it's basically free. No reason not to do it.

Oh, I should have said why this is important...
Culling of materials for avatars and bits of the map happens often and vrchat also runs garbage collection on players when they leave. You're loading texture data a lot more than you think and overall it's eating cpu cycles when you need them.
It helps a ton.
Import settings on images though are as important, not marking non-rgb things properly is also slows things down in processing materials (uncheck pic related for anything that isn't color, like a detail mask, height map, roughness, metallic, etc)
Also audio is genuinely horrible on ram if it's big. Set background music to streaming instead of decompress on load, and use mp3 since your computer has native SoC decoding for it. Ogg is nice, but sadly just a pig for resources in unity. Use pcm for short sounds and effects on everything else.

You're right, it doesn't. Splinks already extensively tested and documented this years ago in the context of VRC worlds. Everything is a tradeoff and nothing is perfect.
Generally for short and frequent audio clips/sound effects, you should use Decompress on Load for import settings, and PCM or ADPCM for the format.
Vorbis is actually a better tradeoff for longer music tracks than PCM/ADPCM, there's a good reason games use it so often. What you should do however is reduce the quality slider as far as you can.

NVENC and NVDEC, Intel's Media SDK (QSV) and AMD's AME AMdec all support mp3 as one of the hardware accelerated formats, yeah, due to being able to use them in video streams.
Hard to find those specs but they're out there. Look at documentation of things like AVPro and software like plex, it's not great and most people forget to install chipset decode support because it's not obvious. Just installing LAAV splitter is a huge performance boost for things like that when you can override windows default behavior to use your native SoC instead (with some caviats)

Things like intel's gpu and nvidia and amd gpus have this little section in their control panel for video. It "hooks" all media playback by listening to the kernel and COMPLETELY takes over, if your drivers are set up right. Some software does that natively, but when you play anything considered media using a kernel codec filter driver in windows, it's almost -always- using a hardware decoder, unless you installed cccp or klite or lav and didn't configure it, which would force it back out to software and slow your system down. And yes, that means mp3 playback inside and out of video too. Stop fighting, you're clearly both knowledgeable, just in different areas.

Agreeing massively here. This is the biggest hiccup for performance as you say about the cost of drawcalls. Which is why we take extra care of doing pic related to Atlas the static part of the whole map as possible. 4 materials for all the non moving meshes is so good on frames.

Too many diffirent Reflection probes also hinders as they break up batching. Can only batch things using the same reflection probes.

Didn’t know about the skybox and postprocessing affecting signifivantly before this book. But I guess different settings on it affect perf differently. Bloom and DOF being the biggest hogs.

Recently my vrchat keeps crashing in worlds that have 40-50 players or more in them. According to the crash message it is because of a memory problem. I checked the RAM usage after entering the instance again, the game crashed at about 14/16GB being used. I also didn't have this problem a few months ago. Are 16GB just not enough anymore? Or is it a VRAM issue? (I have 3.5GB)

3.5GB is quite low for VRAM, that could be part of the cause. I had the same issue on my GTX 970.
You should turn down the supersampling in SteamVR and that will probably help a great deal. You may need to install OpenVR Advanced Settings to forcibly override it and lower it to 1x (or even lower).
Also with that little VRAM, you should hide models that are over 30 MB by default in your performance settings. Normally I hate blocking/hiding stuff, but in larger instances with low VRAM you will basically have to do this.

If you're just using it for wireless PCVR over airlink, I think you'd be fine unlinking with Oculess. If you wanna use the Quest version of it though, you might have some issues. Unlinking supposedly breaks some stuff for Quest native games, but cracked ones might still work.
I don't think a burner Facebook account is much of a risk if you're not planning on buying stuff through it, the worst case scenario I've heard of is them locking the account and asking for proof of identity, and I don't think it's actually all that common.

Swords of Gurrah is dead outside of Discord and the lobbies in these threads, but is pretty fun and well worth the money. There aren't any other games that do proper PVP dueling. Sairento is cool but kind of janky. The movement system is slick and the bullet time mechanics work very well. That said the difficulty and the balance is a mess with the loot+leveling system on top of three different difficulty adjusters. Make sure to turn on flipping if your stomach isn't queasy for maximum ninja style points.

How long are Index controllers supposed to last? I can only get like 3 hours of playing on them before they get down to 30%. Isn't that a bit short?

Okay so I was thinking of upgrading from the Odyssey 2 headset
Windows Mixed Reality has been a mixed bag no pun intended. It's fine if my arms are directly in front of my face, but if I wind back to throw something, the arm spazzes because the headset can't see it. I don't think I can add trackers for feet or arms.

I'm seeing that new headsets may be coming soon, should I wait for those? I only use it for VRChat, H3VR, Carrier Command, and VTOL VR
