It's not like I hate first person though. I just don't really like most of the applications of it like Horror and Shooters.
First-person Builders is probably the closest I can think of that i'd enjoy but they always have: really tiresome survival elements, dodgy af aesthetics that look drab even when they go cartoony and empty worlds. Like give me a Harvest Moon with a full village of personalities, a comfy place to build-up and with some minor exploration.

Nah myst clones tend to be empty sandboxes with barely any story, abstract puzzles and no NPC interaction.
I like the exploration of worlds constrained by a bit of narrative. Again, why I can't stand survival games but love something like Harvest Moon.

Looks like VR would be mostly an excuse to create something myself at this point.
Not bad but guess I can wait until the next iteration, heard there's supposedly some potential FPS improvements coming up and others experimenting with micro-OLED.

What should I use out of XSOverlay or OVR Toolkit?
OVR Toolkit seems to be the more popular judging from reviews but is there significant differences between them? What do anons here recommend?

The Cities game isn't a port of skylines, it's a made for VR spinoff that Facebook is funding. I doubt that it'll be as advanced as Skylines given that the game barely runs well on good PCs.

The closest thing to Harvest Moon in VR is Forest Farm which is the blandest asset flip shit ever. The effort and unironically SOUL that is put into HM or RF probably won't come to a made for VR title anytime soon. VR devs in general seem to be averse to giving their games much in the way of flavor. Garden of the Sea is better but that got Quest-downgraded in quite a heinous manner.

I'd also love to be able to see the source code after buying it (OVR Advanced Settings is open source and XSO isn't). I'm a tinkerer at heart, and even the slightest things would annoy me a lot if I can't tweak them myself.

They come in a Vive-branded box, but the base stations themselves literally say "Valve Index" on the back. They're identical to the Index ones, and can be matched/used with Index ones too.

the reverb is totally fine, it's basically a WMR. If it's substantially cheaper than an Index, you should get one.
Just be aware that if you ever plan on getting fullbody tracking (like, literally ever), getting an Index will ultimately be somewhat cheaper and less hassle.

Reverb G2 is actually a fantastic headset.
Resolution is breathtaking, Audio is fantastic (same as Index)
Tracking is ehh but they did release a Revision which from what I've heard helped a shit ton.
I use Hybrid setup personally (Knuckles + FBT) and it can be a bit tedious but it's honestly worth it in my opinion.

Don't get the Index when you can get the Reverb G2 cheaper, the only downside is the tracking but like I said, supposedly it's been improved greatly with the latest revision, plus they also released an update to the WMR software so you can launch SteamVR directly and not deal with the WMR portal, tho it still runs in the background....However alongside the update they also released a new "home world" called the Infinite Expanse which is way more performance friendly.

Worst case you can just return it.

Howdy /vrg/. My brother generously surprised me with a Quest 2 for Christmas after playing one at a friends’. He didn’t know about the Facebook connections.
Never messed with VR stuff before but I’m very impressed with it so far. Got Pistol Whip and Beat Saber on the Quest store and had a good time with them, then poked into what else I can do and realize how how that was just brushing the surface. I got SteamVR and Alyx, set up the Oculus app, and tested Vivecraft as a proof of concept with Air Link.
Glad to see there’s a general for this. I read the stickies for headset selection and game recs, but I’ve got a bunch of random questions for any kind anons who want to answer any of them.
- Aside from Oculess, anything I should do to unZucc my Quest2?
- If the game is on both the Oculus store and Steam, is there any reason to get it on the former aside from portability?
- It seems Virtual Desktop is a 3rd party alternative to Oculus' Air Link. Is that true, and is there any reason to go for it instead?
- Any general advice to someone coming from square one with VR? Common mistakes made to avoid, or hidden gems to grab?

For historical context, Virtual Desktop was the wireless solution before Airlink was released, which is why a paid app that does the same thing as Airlink exists in the first place. Some people have reported having slightly better performance with Virtual Desktop, or liking some of the additional streaming settings customization options it offers. Also it means you don't have to run zucc software on your pc.

Nausea is a thing that happens for new people. It's gotten better since the old days of first gen headsets, but it still exists for some people. The degree that you'll get, if any, varies and depends on the game, but eventually you'll acclimate it. One problem I've found when introducing people to VR is that they end up associating light levels of naseua with VR and stop playing; if you use VR for more than a few weeks it'll go away entirely, it's just a matter of getting your VR legs under you. Don't push yourself if you do start feeling sick duing a play session though, there's no "powering through it" unless you're drinking, just take a break.

Avoid VR porn videos, they are basically always bad, especially below 4k resolution (and even then).
Mostly avoid ports of games to VR, they are often badly ported (such as Skyrim VR or Subnautica VR). Though they can offer a much more immersive experience of the ported game, they tend to be infuriating because of the controls not being designed for VR. Stick to actual VR games.

Update. Seems to have worked. Step 4 needs to be revised a bit. When you first get in the app it wants you to update and wont let you past that box unless you log into the oculus site and hit a box.

Think you may have replied to the wrong post, but since you asked, you have a few options for cables. If you're on a budget or using a computer without a USB-C port, you can get a 10-15 ft USB-C to USB-A cable for pretty cheap, like $10. This will work fine for data transfer, but the downside is that the cable won't be able to charge your headset faster than it uses battery, so you'll be stuck with a 5-6ish hour use time. Alternatively, you can shell out the money for a longer full USB-C cable.

There's also the option of wireless connection. If your network isn't already in a good configuration for it, you can buy an extra router to place by your computer/VR area for a dedicated setup for like $40. Latency is pretty good if your network is set up properly.

You can use a USB-C to USB-A 3.0 cable. You can stream video it just won't charge while you use it.

You can also, as the other anon said, get a wifi6 router for a wireless setup within your budget. It can be laggy if your system is bad or your network is shit; a lot of people just connect to their regular home network and call it a day then are surprised when their 7 year old router 3 rooms away is giving them latency issues. With a dedicated setup you should have <30ms latency.

It's a single player game, you actually benefit greatly from no prior knowledge or experience. People will often refuse to tell you much about the game because the entire game is about learning things about the game and using it to progress. Highly recommended, and the DLC is fun too. Pirate it if you don't want to risk money on it, the VR mod will work fine for that I believe.
Boneworks is kinda meh, but outer wilds was a great flat game and VR just enhances it.

Play whichever you prefer. 1.0 is harder in the eco, but much easier in the enemies. 2.0 is more forgiving in the eco and gameplay loop (wipes after a few days rather than every time you return to base) but the enemies are nastier and more fun to fight. 2.0 has better economy unless you really enjoy scrounging for every last bullet. You find loot items or artefacts to sell instead of cores and the extra ammo options allows you to use cheaper ammo when the best ammo would be overkill. Ammo balance changed a lot in 2.0 though, Tokarev no longer feels like a viable pistol option and 5.45 x 39 is weirdly weak.

Also it's not obvious but headshots do more damage, just like if you hit the core. You can save a lot of ammo that way.

Not really, they're completely different games in a lot of aspects. Conserve your ammo, shoot sparingly, do missions for cash, and progress in the story. You get loads more money nearer the end of the game. Once you get good at killing certain enemy types and knowing where they are you can some high value cores; fragment cores are like 35 bux, spawn cores like 50, mimic cores like 80, sliders are like 130. Keep the backpack weapon slot free for free guns to sell. The factory mission is pretty hard but you get a shit load of stuff to sell.
