Alright, I have never seen this issue with any avatar model ever in unity.

So the base mesh is about 46k polys with some added stuff to it. I then attach these boots to the armature at the lower leg (the boots are about 2k polys) and then suddenly....the vrchat sdk is detecting like 2 billion polys on the model.
What the fuck is happening here? how can I fix this? I know the boots are very low poly I went back into blender to double check.

So I wanna preface this by saying that I'm absolutely new so this might be a dumb question. I got a Booth avatar and it has the normal model and then the base body as a separate prefab. My issue is that the regular prefab has boots, gloves and a small collar attached to the body, while the base one does not have these. Would it be possible to merge the base body onto the regular one so I could have a way to toggle stuff like the boots and gloves but keep the rest of the clothes somehow?

If it isn't already sepperated in the fbx / unity import then you have to go to blender and sepperate them to their own meshes. It's not the most difficult thing to do but you will know how to do basic selections and control the blender UI. Afterwards you can reimport into Unity and create your Avatar 3.0 toggles.

How do I join two meshes in blender without the second thing completely losing it's texture material?
example:
I have mesh 1 "body" with texture body
then mesh 2 legband with a legband texture
I select legband, shift select body, then CTR+J, now I have just one mesh (body) and the legband is part of the mesh....however the texture that was on the legband is completely fucked and it just gets altered when I merged them, despite the material carrying over correctly?

What's wrong with UTS or liltoon?

What's the most effective way to "smooth out" faces/vertexes around an area so they all match? WITHOUT completely fucking up the overall shape of the mesh? I just can't get vertexes to look good near each other after joining some pieces onto a body mesh.
I've already tried
-subdivide+smooth (didn't seem to help at all)
-smooth tool in sculpt mode (it re-shapes the verts okay, but it also reshapes WAY too much of the overall mesh and really fucks up the overall shape)

normals are a line pointing "outwards" from each face that tells the software the direction light hits the face and therefore how the shading should look

there's good reasons to adjust those normals (like for making curved surfaces look smooth or to keep edges sharp etc) but they tend to look weird after merging two meshes with different normals near the connection area

Oh I see, thank you. My knowledge on this shit is so damn limited I swear. The most I know of normals is imply to "flip" them if the mesh is completely blacked out to set them to the proper side. Now I know a little more.

I should honestly just invest time into studying blender formally, rather than just guessing my way through most of it just to crank out vrc avatars.
Is there a recommended tutorial guide/book/whatever on the latest blender that'd be a good read? I gotta study up when I got free time, it'd help expand how well I can work with models

Oh yeah, a vector is just a line in 3 dimensions, so each face has a vector telling the direction of the normal. You can actually turn the vector all the way around so they point inwards, at which point you won't even be able to see the face unless it's using a two-sided shader. Flipped normals is another common problem you might see after merging meshes, but also easy to spot and fix once you know about it.
