Coming soonish is May Day. On May 1st, a lot of places celebrate the turn of spring with festivals and food, and some places just whine about working. Here, we celebrate with blender and unity. And probably alcohol. Everyone new and old can learn to learn limbswapping and grafting feathers at any one of several servers.

This hacky poster may be updated with times if we decide to make it an actual structured festival, but it'd be cool just to get an avatar event together. Last year, it was january, and some people did some cool stuff. Letsee what we can do this year!

This place is very distrusting towards random names that they don't know because we have an issue where a lot of times random people will join on our instances and take over the instance. Over the years this has lead to an attitude of people being hostile on first impression towards names they do not recognize. For a lot of people it's hard to tell the difference between rando and newfag, so getting out of the way first and foremost that you're from the thread and new already gives a better impression about you to most people, because otherwise they assume you are a rando that isn't from this website.

I think there's a difference between just being born ugly IRL and actively choosing an ugly avatar in a game that allows a lot of customization to make it less so or even aesthetically pleasing.

To me, being born ugly wouldn't matter because we can't choose how we are born and we shouldn't mistreat people based on things they don't have control over.
We can to some degree control or even choose our appearance on that basis, e.g. by getting scars or cosmetic treatments, and by just taking care of ourselves, the latter of which you should at least do. The ingame equivalent to that would be a game that just gives you a predefined character and maybe allows you to change what hat you are wearing (Team Fortress 2).

Actively making your ingame avatar ugly to "filter people", however, primarily signals to me that you just hate people. Not only is there the implicit pessimistic claim that most people are superficial by only caring about appearance, it's also ruthless to intentionally and for mere instrumental reasons assault people's aesthetic preferences to a degree that a lot of people would like to avoid you when you can choose not to do so.

If a person just wants to "filter people" who just treat you nicely because you look nice, they can choose the option to just use an understated avatar.
Maybe that is what you meant by "specific avatar", but in my mind is the visual equivalent of a microphone screamer.

Depends if you've done 3d before. I have 1500h in blender, never touched 3d before vrchat back in early 2018, made and sold my first scratch avatar around the 500h mark.

Probably could have finished it by 200h if I made it my only goal or followed some "make your first avatar ever" tutorial instead. I learned everything piecemeal and only decided to make the avatar when I realized I knew everything I needed to do it. I'm not a smart man, I remember it took me 18 hours to attach a pair of rabbit ears to a MMD for Easter 2018. You might learn faster than me.

All that said, you don't need to do a scratch avatar unless you really want the prestige or whatever. Buying a base and kitbashing it in blender will eventually teach you all the principles anyway and that's how almost everyone here started.

I played the new ITR beta a bit; with the scavenger mod on scarce. I set up enemy count, increased hunger, and decreased mission reward.
It's fun living off the land but I feel like scarce is just too scarce; since all it really adds is grind. Grinding missions for money is better in vanilla because the reward is anything you can buy. Reward for the grind is much reduced and due to the increased monster count there's very little profit.

I'll probably leave monster count up for the challenge and then move the quantity of stuff back up to normal; and then probably increase enemy HP to compensate. HP increase I think is a bigger difficulty bump than more enemies because it changes the dynamics of magazines and shot counts, and increases their time to hurt you.
