It's old, the resolution is high enough to mitigate SDE, and the build quality is pretty good. It's comfortable, well made, the microphone is the best on the market, the speakers are also the best on the market, the tracking is also the best on the market, the support is also the best on the market, and the controllers are good. However it's wired so the cable will wear out eventually, but careful use can keep it going a year or two. It's an absolutely amazing headset, only hampered by it being a bit old.
Newer headsets have not surpassed it in anything other than pixels in the screen.

I switched to the gaskets from vrcover and haven't really looked back. They're more of a soft leather feel and much easier to wipe down. I haven't personally had any issues with them in the last 6 months I've been using them.

Polygons aren't too much of an issue if you remove the shapekeys from them. Just optimise everything and if you're over 70k polys with the head split off and the blendshaoes removed from everything else you're good. As for size try and keep it under 30mb

Depends if it’s an event or just hanging out in a small instance. Try for medium/poor for events as most will have safety settings set to block anyone who is very poor, 25mb download size and under 100mb vram. Keep in mind your friends will have it set to auto show your avatar, don’t be a cockhead about it and walk around with 300k polys, 500mb + vram.

It's all still very vague. Back in 2021 there was an article saying that Valve had 2 different designs, one was similar to the Index and another switched to Q2 style inside-out tracking. As far as I know that's the most we've heard about tracking methods since then.

There's something standalone about it but that doesn't neccesarily mean a standalone headset like the Q2 or a Steam Deck slapped into a VR headset. Evidence points to a Qualcomm chip being present in a prototype. Even if Deckard included Steam Deck hardware it could be indicitive of dedicated chip for handling wireless or other system tasks. Apple are rumored to doing something similar so it's not unreasonable to think Valve might have reached the same conclusion. Seems that wireless wasn't as easy as Gabe said back when the Index launched.
2022 patents as well as codenames in steamVR files suggest that native wired may remain an option too.

vrc never had this big of a furry problem till like the end of 2020. even vrg threads are dead as fuck now, when there used to be multiple new threads created daily.
