(wow! almost perfect timing!)
hey!
tuesday's movie is C.H.U.D

A bizarre series of sudden disappearances on the streets of New York City seems to point toward something unsavory living in the sewers.
starting at 19:00 UTC as usual!

iktf bro. All the higher effort games seem to be Quest or PSVR exclusive these days, and even then none of them are as good as Armored Core 6 or Baldurs Gate 3. I just play ports of flat games at this point, lotsa fun and much better than being a VRC only coomer.

Threadly Dirt Rally 2.0 event reminder, we're currently running Group B RWD in Germany.
It's not as tough as it sounds, but I'd still recommend getting some practice in if you're not comfortable with any of the cars.
You still have until next Monday (10/16) to set a time. Club link is in the OP rentry if you're interested.

You should be able to pick up a used Quest 2 ( or even Quest 1 ) for next to nothing at this point. Don't debt slave yourself anon

>>449614203
Every time I tried people either ignored me or were audibly disgusted I would speak in their presence
>>449615126
That will happen in VR as well. You just need to up your user rank, a lot of people just straight up mute new users / visitors entirely.
>>449606394
Except for two people no one has noticed the diaper my avatar wears under their skirt at meetups.
>>449609708
game?
Not a video game per se but I've downloaded a 3d version of predator and terminator 2 and I tried playing them in virtual desktop and sky box and that shit does not work. They are way the fuck too far apart, like arnie's shoulder will be on the edge of one eye and the rest of his body on the other, how the fuck does your brain combine these images together? I don't have problems with the big screen 3d demos. What's the deal here? Deobox vr I guess?
>>449621538
Bootstrap Island, one of the nextfest demos. It's absurdly short for the filesize and starts off with the worst TAA setting I've seen in a VR game.
Despite that the execution is not bad and I was left intrigued by the concept.
>>449622201
Maybe it's the remux 3d files I have and not the Blu-ray raw/Blu-ray formats

I bought an IR light so I could use my quest in the dark and in passthrough it looks like a little tiny sun, it lights up half of my room like it's day in the middle of the night
What's the worst thing it could be doing to me? How many cancers am I going to get?
449623932
>>449623932
The absolute fucking state of this thread.
>>449623932
please dress appropriately
>>449624147
If camera has no IR filter (quest cameras most likely don't have ir filters, though that's an entirely uneducated guess), it's relatively sensitive to infrared, and so very little light gives quite a bit of result. Do you know how many watts is your IR light rated for?
It *could* still be relatively safe as long as you never get to walk around with your eyes wide open in dark while IR light is on. Then again, it also could be that you've accidentally bought some kind of infrared cooker and your skin will not be amused while literally getting heated up by IR light. Still concerning when considering the possibility that one day, you'll just sit with your eyes open in a dark room that blasts your eyes with infrared without you realizing it. You sure you're not okay with an ordinary light bulb?
I know what they say about guilt by association, but it's unironically needed to stop the spread of cancer.
Trashnig and furfag apologists deserve the same treatment.
Posed in a picture with them? Get kicked too.

>>449625531
Eeh, that's just a bunch of ordinary low-power LEDs, doesn't look scary to me. You didn't die from walking under security camera in local convenience store, and it most likely outputs similar amounts of infrared light.
I'd still be a bit paranoid about my eyes though, though it's not like you're going to put your eye right next to this device, and it's not a big problem if light is dispersed all over the room. I dunno, I'd still buy a good old lightbulb instead, but if you're not into it for some reason, I don't think you're particularly in danger. Then again, listening to people on the internet causes mustard gas in your bathroom, and I obviously didn't do any research on that other than my paranoia googling when building eyetracking with IR lights, so I dunno, pick your poison.
lightbulb good

Oh, is this another episode of people wanting me to fight their battles for them? It's easy to say the kinda stuff you're saying anonymously. but there's a reason you're saying it here and not where people can see who you are.
That said, I don't have the power to purge people in the way you want anyway. I can keep my immediate vicinity clean and that's about it. That's why pypy has a dress code, so settle down. I'm doing my part.

I'm already very quick to criticize my acquaintances for being too lewd, which is part of why I have a reputation for being a big time prude. >>449623932
To be honest I'm not really sure why this is posted on thread at this point. We have more or less informal rules that if you're posting an event here that it's for people specifically from here. At this point it's not really a /vrg/ event just an event run by someone from /vrg/. The only event really exempt from this are those concert recreations because they're high enough effort that I'd let them have my children. I feel like continuing to post it here is just a bit disrespectful to your friends at this point my feelings on furfags and trashniggers aside.

And the problem with that?
If you are posing for a picture with a giant dog behind you, goblin infront and a cumming ahegao fag to the side you should expect what's coming to you.
Everyone in that pic deserves to be blacklisted.

>>449636585

If you want things to change in-game, you need to go out there and change them yourself.

>>449637864
QPro/Index owner here. You should be able to hybrid setup it like Quest 2/Pro, though you'll want an extra tracking puck to place on the headset so you don't have to recalibrate manually. You can use earbuds or headphones for better audio quality, but you'll want the BT connection to be to your PC. I also highly recommend Virtual Desktop over Airlink.

Open up Blender, buy or steal some assets from Booth, rip some assets from games, it's time to get world building. you have until December and the theme is winter, anything even vaguely winter themed is fine.
All skill levels are welcome. If you want to build everything from scratch, that's great, but if you want to use booth prefabs and just learn the basics, then that's okay too. There will be a hub world with portals so anyone can visit the worlds at any time but for the event itself the host will have pre-favourited the worlds so they can drop friends+ portals
You can submit your world by sending your world ID to vrbuild123@gmail.com, vrbuild on Discord or post it in the thread

Anyone here unironically getting Quest 3 tomorrow? Do you think it's really worth an upgrade from Quest 2?
>>449667047
I am but it's my first headset.
I'm supposed to get virtual desktop for steam right? that's the killer app?
>>449667047
arriving in a couple of hours.
Quest2 was never really worth the upgrade from Quest1 ( more of a sidegrade, give up OLED's true blacks for more pixels ). Pancake lenses of the Pico4 made it a good contender, but terrible lenses and displays made me stick with the Quest1.
I expect the Quest3 to be a Pico4, without all its flaws.
Am still sad about having to give up OLEDs though.
>>449667435
Yes, but I'm not sure if Virtual Desktop is 100% compatible with Quest 3. It should work but I'm not surprised if some weirdness occurs.
>>449667435
If you are getting a Quest, you want to buy Virtual Desktop off the Quest store, for the Quest; that is what you use to stream games from PC.
Virtual Desktop for the PC ( sold on Steam / Oculus PC store ) is a completely different program simply for viewing your desktop while already in VR, confusingly named the same and by the same developer. You don't really need that; XSOverlay is fine.
>>449667478
Are you getting the 128gb or 512gb one?
>>449667523
>>449667637
oh, thanks for the help. I'll be sure to do more research before it arrives, should be neat
>>449623932
Holy shit. This might be the worst I've ever seen these pictures get. Why the FUCK is this still advertised here?
>>449667047
I got mine few hours ago and I prefer it a lot compared to Q2
>>449667747
128gb.
Exclusively play PCVR, and if I decide I want to try one of the standalone games 128gb should be plenty. No point in 512gb unless you want to jump between a bunch of different standalone games without reinstalling them.
They've apparently also overestimated the demand for the 512gb model; people who pre-ordered the day it was announced are getting delivery dates in early November.
>>449668001
>people who pre-ordered the day it was announced are getting delivery dates in early November.
I ordered my 512 off amazon 3 days after announcement and it shipped yesterday
anecdotal, not arguing, just sayin'
Meta dropped the forecast of Q3 shipment from 7m to 2m.
In a couple of months they will drop the price of 512gb version or maybe even completely replace 128gb version with it.
Imagine preordering that shit like a retard.

Man, I kinda want to get a Quest 3 but getting the cheapest one means a storage downgrade from my Quest 2 yet at the same time I play PCVR almost exclusively.
I still have my Rift S collecting dust as well.
>>449668001
>They've apparently also overestimated the demand for the 512gb model; people who pre-ordered the day it was announced are getting delivery dates in early November.
Yeah idk if I just missed the window but 512GB seemed like it never went in stock on Amazon UK.
>>449668275
>In a couple of months they will drop the price of 512gb version or maybe even completely replace 128gb version with it
Nah their current plan is to release a Quest 3 lite and possibly ship it without controllers.

>>449668840
>getting the cheapest one means a storage downgrade from my Quest 2 yet at the same time I play PCVR almost exclusively.
How much free storage did you have on your Quest 2?
>>449669132
They plan was to sell 7 million units of Q3 too. And that's not happening. Price cut coming.
I knew about the Quest Poor.
>>449669251
>They plan was to sell 7 million units of Q3 too. And that's not happening. Price cut coming.
Nah they don't want to repeat the mistake of the Quest Pro, the Quest Poor will be their option instead.
>>449669357
But they are repeating it right now. Nobody gives a shit about Quest Poo.
The facecuck era of vr is over. It's time to accept it.
>>449669424
>Nobody gives a shit about Quest Poo
Exactly, and part of the reason why is because they dropped the price by $500 after launch.
The last thing they want to do is cause another PR problem like that, especially with the Quest 2's temporary price hike as well.
>>449634563
You know what, I completely mistakenly assumed that you ran the VR workouts too. Y-sama I kneel in forgiveness

>>449669572
QPro is valuable simply for eye/face tracking. Wasn't talking about it.
It's very simple really, if zucc wants to sell units, he needs to subsidize them out of his own pocket.
Nobody with a brain would buy his shit overwise.
>>449669816
>if zucc wants to sell units, he needs to subsidize them out of his own pocket
That's what they already did with Quest 2 and it bit them in the ass when supply chain issues meant they needed to temporarily raise the price because they were losing too much on each headset sale.
>>449669816
they dont even make them anymore so thats not going to happen
>>449669896
>>449670010
Then they are not selling the headsets, it's that simple.
>>449670232

>>449670546
I'm talking about Q3 and QLite, you fucking retard. If it wasn't obvious to you.
>>449670546
>>449670010
They're not gonna discontinue the Quest 2 as quickly as they discontinued the Quest 1.
Q2 is going to the most sold zucc headset forever.
They will never surpass it.
This is because the GTA Definitive Edition sucked shit and was gonna be the basis for the San Andreas VR port, isn't it?
>>449670626

>>449670942

>>449671319
they made shitton of them, expecting great demand
they thought governments and business are going to slurp them
dunno how delusional you can be to think that, especially when they had "working" product at hand, but they did
and that whole report wasn't even about end of production if i remember correctly, they just didn't order more components from a supplier, suggesting that they still have enough in stock

gummy bear review please
>>449673740
kemono: animal ears and tail
critical point: animal feet/hands
furry: humanoid; covered in fur/feathers/scales; face is animal-like
monstergirl: humanoid; based on things that don't exist; obscure combinations with real animals like moth or squid can also be placed here instead of under furry, this means some things can be borderline.
socially acceptable anthropomorphism: more closely resembles the animal than a human, or heavily stylised version of the animal; sonic is here
>>449675508
theyre kind of sweet. too sweet. im not a big fan of sweet treats but these ones were free so i had to eat them.
>>449675551
Hmm, I just this picture so I decided to ask.
The face is undeniably sonic-like, but overall it's much closer to kemono.
>>449675551
>>449673740
Kemono means 'beast'. It's the Japanese term for furry. Kemono mimi, or kemomimi, is the term for cat girls with ears and tail only.

I have a quest 3 and cv1, you have to literally be brain dead to recommend going back to the cv1. Like what? Who the fuck even recommended it. Do you have a link?
Quest 3 mini-review:
Lenses have less glare than my GearVR-lens-modded Vive Pro, very good.
Lenses get darker towards the sides.
Image doesn't get blurry outside of sweetspot, but does get significantly darker. In this sense the sweetspot is no greater than Quest1/2.
With a standard issue aryan skull shape I have to use the 3/4 eye relief setting to not be stabbed in the face. Even at this setting I can see the bottom edge of the displays when looking straight forward. When closer I can also see the left/right edges.
Blacks are shit, though that's not unexpected.
VD's reprojection stuff seems to work a lot better than when I last tried it on the Pico4, could legit imagine just leaving it enabled at all times. 120hz is super smooth.
Still get some microstutter with VD, but at 120hz it's not very noticeable anymore.
Handtracking doesn't seem much better than Q1; still can't cross my fingers.
Stock headstrap is bad in the same way the Q2 one was bad; when positioned so it actually clamps onto your face it also wants to tilt the headset outwards. Not viable.
Feels like there' a bit of overflow inside now, like the Pico4 but less intrusive.
Overall a bit dejected. The face-stabbing issue could be resolved by shifting the headset down a bit, but then everything becomes dark.
talking to a friend using hos q3 rn, he's confused by the ar room thing. when he sits down he sees his room, any ideas to disable it? he tried the tapping thing to turn it on/off but its still persistent. this is info i need too since I may impulse buy it soon.
>>449702610
>still can't cross my fingers

>>449702610
Have you tried using the Quest 2 and Quest 3 back and forth to get a better idea of the sweet spot?
>>449702902
If you have the money to consider impulse buying, you can buy a used index instead
>>449704129
The index is so outdated. The high fov it has just isn’t so special anymore and the controller’s main selling point is a gimmick mainly used for tranny simulator.
did anyone try pianovision on the q3 yet ?
>>449704129
I have an index and it's starting to physically fall apart, and it's out of warranty; already bought my 2nd replacement cable off Ebay and it wasn't a pretty penny.
>>449704392
its old as dirt, but as we are finding out, its STILL better than the quest 3
Ideally you'd get the Deckard, but valve dropped the ball again
>>449704078
Comparing side-by-side with my Quest1 ( same lenses as Q2 ), sweetspot feels pretty much exactly the same, you just get dark-grey-washed-out effect instead of blur.

>>449704907
Better than the Quest 3 in what way? When the fuck did 4chan rely on twitter and Reddit for opinions anyways.
>>449705564

What place has the best return policy for a Quest 3 if I just plain don't like it and want to return it for a refund? Meta's site say they have a "Worry-free trial" but I don't really know what the fuck that means. I assume Best Buy/Walmart probably doesn't do refunds. I can probably order from Micro Center and save $50 on tax, but their return policy for online orders probably sucks

I really can't believe it could be the cable. I babied it so much. I wish I knew someone else with a cable so I could test it, but I just don't think it could be that. I think whatever regulates the video or power in the headset is just fucked or something. I can plug USB and it stays connected, but as soon as I plug in the HDMI it freaks out.

Cables tend to fail gradually. On Rift mine would randomly go black for a few seconds then come back, or render nothing but random colors until I restarted it. On Index, it would render sparkles of increasing intensity and refuse to connect without retrying many times.

I am tired of waitfagging, currently I have a PC with a 5800x3d, 32gb of ram and a 3060TI and around 4k usd to spare, I just want to have a good VR experience and do as much as I can.
Do I need to upgrade? Should I get a Zucc headset? What would be the most painless setup?
>>449717174
pico4
>>449717230
Will I need to set up an account or can I sideload stuff to it?
>>449717174
You can zucc, though index is widely regarded as the most competent bundle and it feels like an entirely different thing with good FoV and zero latency/compression. Then again, Index is $1000, and between quest + $700 on new gpu and index + 3060ti, i'm not quite sure which one would be a nicer option. Depends on vidya, and on whether you can tolerate dropping resolution down or not.
After renting a Pico 4 for three months for little money I was sold on VR.
I locked it away from internet completly, and was surprised how well it ran in my local network with PCVR and Virtual Desktop.
Now I purchased the Quest 3, already curious if I can run it similarly without Zucc watching me fap.
Wired and AV1 sound really good.
>>449718134
>Now I purchased the Quest 3, already curious if I can run it similarly without Zucc watching me fap.
I had a Quest 1 and oculus link worked offline even without internet access, also theoretically air link should work over a LAN even if internet is blocked
>>449717940
I guess the most sensible option would be to just Zucc out and then wait to see if valve ever decides to make a new headset and upgrade my PC if need be
stop trying to meme people into quest
it fucking sucks for pcvr
>>449718854
Elaborate.
>>449719040
you have to spend just as much if not more than an index would be just to make it function properly without latency and not have the battery die every hour
>>449718724
Most budget-friendly, yeah. Not optimal though, Index is still a superior bundle and age definitely didn't make it any worse. Maybe the best idea for you would be to look for ways to test both systems and draw your own conclusions. If you've got any friends with headsets, or got any decent rental offers around, give both a shot and then pick one.you'll most likely go for index despite literally 3x the price
>>449719220
Don't you just have to buy a cable?
>>449719416
>age definitely didn't make it any worse

>>449719454

>>449719454
If you're going to play it wired anyways why even bother with it? Just get an Index
>>449719416
Quest 3 > Index
>>449719220
Wired is just not my thing. I've had lots of fun with theIndex, and older wired headets, but even with latency and artifacts due to video compression, the Pico 4 showed me that immersion works a lot better if you're not limited in any way.
But of course, that's highly subjective.
>>449717835

>>449702026

Valve Index is the worst purchase I've ever made and I used it for less than a week.
My headset had horrible glare which made watching any form of media horrible, somehow one of the speakers got blown out, my controller's joystick started making squeaky noises, and the base stations made annoying loud ass noises.
I'm suppose to play this lottery game with a 1k product until things are better? It's annoying as fuck having to pack everything up and unplug all the wires and then having to deal with the whole RMA process. At least with a Quest, I can easily walk to my local bestbuy.
Also the controller's main selling point is gimmicky as fuck. It's pretty much a bulky ass controller for no good reason.
>>449721449
My 144hz OLED flat monitor gave me the same experience moving from an 144hz IPS. There is way less ghosting than IPS as the technology is just more responsive and lower latency.

>>449722881
Why would you ever want to read a physical book while in VR?
Why would you even want to read a physical book in this day and age? Just get it digitally, boomer.
Does the quest 3 have the same problem where it loses tracking if a controller is too close to your head, like when trying to aim down sights on a rifle

If you’re using the nvidia/amd encoder no it’s not you’re getting placebo’d.
Av1 is most effective at low bitrates (sub 250Kbps).
AV1 NVENC/AMF has maybe a 1% VMAF benefit over HEVC which is 1/10th of fuck all.
Its main benefit is error recovery which isn’t applicable either in vr scenarios.
>>449729350
I think it's more of a case of you focusing too much on the negatives which is fine since humans naturally do that. You can have a small number of people being very vocal and it'll feel like the problem is a lot bigger than it actually is.

>quest 3 mini-review followup after a few more hours
The vignetting on the outside ( side facing outwards ) of the lens is horrendous, like 1/3rd of the screen fades down to half the brightness of the center. Doesn't matter how close you get, or what you set your IPD to. Inside and up/down are fine as long as you're in the sweetspot.
Hand-tracking handles fast-movement far worse than the Quest 2, which is to say it doesn't. It's better than the Quest1 in terms of handling your hands overlapping and stuff, but fast-movement is Quest1 tier. I don't know wtf, there's plenty of light.
When you've got a bright white object in the center of your screen you do get the same full-frame strobing glares you get on the Pico4, though they are less noticeable. There are no pico4-style internal-reflections.
Passthrough is good enough to read text on my phone.
Remain conflicted, kinda wish I didn't already order lens inserts so returning it would be less of a loss. I miss my blacks.
Pictured: The vignette. Unfair comparison because the camera is pretty far away from the lens here, but it gives a good idea of what the vignette looks like when it's on your face.

>Conclusion: at 2024x2024 I've found both to look equally as clear, Quest Pro has slightly better colours and contrast, where as Quest 3 runs SOLID, like zero frame drops and can feels that there's plenty of headroom.
>As 2024x2024 is Quest Pro's limit (IMO), I decided to test Quest 3 with 3024 x 3024:
>Despite not having quite the contrast as the Quest pro, there's no denying that the Q3 handles Quest games impressively. I 've tested whooping 4024 x 4024 before i start seeing some frame drops. (Though I recommend 3024x3024 at the most). The overall fluidness of the navigation and transitions in and out of apps is seamless, you can really feel the difference.
>>449750919
People on reddit were complaining that Q2 games were lagging because it increases their resolution by 1.2 automatically
>>449751351
It's bullshit. 18m pixels at locked 72hz? With a garbage mobile chip? Yeah, that's not happening.
300W desktop GPU's would struggle with that.

yea, works standalone. just open the browser and browse. eporner has lots of full scenes in 4k or you can pay for subscription on some vr site if you’re that kind of coomer. the passthrough vids on slr are kinda cool desu
>>449719454
You need a good wifi access point, battery banks, and possibly if you get into FBT, lighthouses and more 4 trackers which... adds up. Index + 3 trackers is cheaper than quest + 4 trackers.
>>449747456
Some people claim it's playable over VD, but having only played it on a regular PCVR headset, I couldn't see it being playable with any added latency really. Quest version is supposedly more of a pain to mod though.
how fancy of a router do you need for virtual desktop/air link for quest 3?
wifi 6E? like one of those ELITE GAYMER $400 routers or just any 6E router should work?
my ISP's modem is also wifi but I doubt it's 6E or any type of 6. it's old
>>449760557
yeah it works in virtual desktop

There's literally no point to all that unless you want to roleplay as a tranny.
I'm just gonna say it and I know I'm going to be a minority but
After trying the quest 3 I'm gonna say the upgrade from the quest 2 is not worth the money honestly
>>449751116
>>449751637
I think it'll depend on the game.
Red Matter 2 supposedly has dynamic resolution on Quest 3 with an upper limit of 3322x3519.

>>449768306
What would be worth the money for you?
The only thing worth the money would be a headset with microOLED, pancake and eye/facetracking.
Until then, Q2 is good enough.
I just want Vision Pro, but with controllers (with adaptive triggers and voicecoil haptics) and without Apple.
>>449770458
You can do a lot with mobile optimisation
>>449770995

>>449768306
I'm thinking of upgrading from the CV1. I just wanna wait for reviews about the tracking, I mostly just play beat saber for workouts anyway
>>449773472
I’ve got an index but I haven’t bothered setting it up in my new house yet and there’s enough standalone-only stuff to entice me with the Quest 3 (exclusive games, hand tracking, mixed reality)
Why mixed reality is such a fucking retard magnet?
Do normalfags actually fall for the low-effort marketing?
A literal gimmick.
>>449776938

>>449738546
4k is pretty low for a vr porn video though.
Are there any PCVR-only games you guys think could come to Quest 3 once Meta start allowing Q3 exclusives next year?
I'm curious which games could make full use of the improved power.
>>449778468
Q3 exclusives are not going to happen.
Greedy fucks who care about mobileshit vr are not going to ignore 20mil headsets and limit themselves only to 2mil Q3. They would rather completely castrate the game instead just to make it run on Q2.
>>449778845
>Greedy fucks who care about mobileshit vr are not going to ignore 20mil headsets and limit themselves only to 2mil Q3
I'm sure Meta will pony up some more cash through their publishing program to encourage Q3-exclusive titles.
Don't forget that the first Q2-exclusive (RE4 VR) was directly published by Meta.
>>449778845
>They would rather completely castrate the game instead just to make it run on Q2.
I think the poor reception of Grid Legend's Q2 port will discourage future extreme castrations.
>>449778980
I doubt it. If the supply chain related Q3 rumors are true, meta doesn't expect Q3 to be that popular.
It might go on backburner like QPro, with them focusing on a new headset which will compete with apple in 2024-25.
Zucc is retarded, so I can see that happening.
>>449779372
They wanted the Quest 3 to compete with apple though.
Their new headsets are just gonna be cheaper versions of the Quest 3, possibly sold without controllers.
I think my quest 3 gassed me, ranjeesh won, but the panels and lenses are really good so I can't stop. I'm dying from heavy metal poisoning lmao.
And just to put it into perspective, Q3 is only 3.3 TFLOPS.
Q2 was 1.1 TFLOPS.
4090 is 80 TFLOPS.
>>449779518
>Their new headsets are just gonna be cheaper versions of the Quest 3, possibly sold without controllers.
Can you stop bringing that retarded shit up? Nobody cares about it.
It was designed when meta expected to ship 8 million Q3. Now they expect to ship just 2m.
You can forget about the old plan already.
Zucc will flail and struggle before the eventual demise, and we are about to see it.
>>449779713
zucc has already branch swung to his new boyfriend, ai. and faceberg is actually good at that
>>449779713
How many TFLOPS is the 1060?
>>449780174
~4 at typical boost clocks.
>>449780238
so the Q3 isn't too far off considering it's a mobile chipset.
>>449779713
Dang that's a lot of processing power for 20w
Could almost get to ps3 level of details once the devs can squeeze that juice out
>>449780408
But that's running at full blast which will almost never happen since the thermals would melt your face.
>>449780502
so what would the typical TFLOPs be?
just 3? 2.5?
Are there any real women that play vrchat? Seems like 95% obese men and troons
>>449780408
>>449780484
Yeah, but the expected resolution for 1060 was 1080p which is around 2.07mpixels.
Just one eye of Q3 is 2064x2208, which 4.55mpixels, and you have two.
And that's only the base panel, you want render MUCH higher.
Add to that the absolute minimum requirement of 72 fps and it's starts to look very grim.
>>449780531
Probaly around 2-2,5, all standalone HMDs are heavily throttled. New XR2 has better thermal because RAM does not have to be slapped on top of the chip but you still can't push it to the levels you could when running in something that isn't in front of your eyes.
>>449780662
Qualcomm has this upscaling algorithm on the chip I forgot the name of that's an option in VD. I think most quest devs target 72fps @ 1500-1800res range then you let the AI upscale take the wheel and you might be able to get away with 2010 tier of visual fidelity.
>>449780484
I wonder if it could possibly reach the level of early PSVR games.
>>449780662
>Just one eye of Q3 is 2064x2208
Don't forget that the default render resolution of the Q3 is 1680×1760.
Only the big graphical showcases like Red Matter 2 are aiming for that upper limit of 3322x3519, and even then that's a dynamic range.
>>449780649
A few but might as well be a no women zone. Most of the playerbase are loosers like you looking for girls online in a male dominated space before they become the girl instead.
>>449780649
There is loads of real women than plays VRChat. They are mostly in the range of 16-22 years old which you may or may not prefer. You will at least bump into between one and three real women per world if you go to the popular ones.
Most of them are very bratty and hyper sexual tho which I don't really like that much.
>>449780664
>Probably around 2-2.5
that tracks with Meta's claim of the Quest 3 having "twice the raw graphics (GPU) performance of the Quest 2"
>>449780649

>>449780878
lol lmao
>>449780894

>>449780771
It's poop either way. Mobile shit was a mistake.
>>449780817
>Red Matter 2 are aiming for that upper limit of 3322x351
That's just the max size of the framebuffer. They heavily downsample with fixed foveated rendering and other tricks.
And that's the only one game, which is also pretty boring. But yeah, they've optimized it well.
>shrink die and squander energy savings on Motorola razor flip phone color passthrough
heh
>>449781025
Point remains that a lot of standalone titles may not attempt supetsampling or even aim for native resolution in favour of graphical quality and performance.
>>449781093
>Motorola razor flip phone
The new ones?
>>449781025
not to mention fixed foviated rendering is actually really hard on these new lenses, fresnels you can fuck up the edges and you get the natural "anti aliasing" effect of the lens getting progressively blurrier these new ones are clear to the edge.
>>449781307
Nah the one where noods looked like colorized gen 1 nightvision but you could make the front screen background a ferarri so it was cool
>>449781554

They better have it available by the end of the month
>>449773472
The CV1 and like, google cardboard are my only point of reference. I'd be interested in hearing your impressions of whatever headset you end up upgrading to.
>People online are reporting tons of possible Quest 3 issues like dead/stuck pixels, mura, uneven backlight between the lenses, loose screws/bolts, mislocated lens, hissing sounds, passthrough graininess, overheating, and lens vignetting
Man they must have rushed production after Quest Pro's failure.
>>449702610
How much better are the colors/contrast compared to the quest 2? I'm not expecting OLED levels obviously, but even my 1440p LCD monitor was way better than the quest 2.

Wow, Quest fans are vocal about the Quest 3 and they are NOT happy. They're discontented with the problems and the whole passthrough thing.

It depends on the headset. We don't know if it's region-based or just pure luck but some headsets seen to have significantly improved passthrough while others are basically the Quest 2 with color.
>quest 3 only has 2 hours of battery life
do VR headsets really?

His face is like 3-4 inches away from the main monitor as soon as he goes back to a normal distance of about 1.5ft it's illegible. Same with the phone screen. It looks illegible from a normal distance you would have a phone away from your head
>>449787124
Should have had 15minutes battery life and an external battery.
>>449787124
When used completely standalone, yes. When connected to a PC with a decent cable the power will drain so slow that you basically don't have to worry about it running out while playing.
>>449787141
Mine is illegible regardless of distance. Even the headset itself struggled massively to read the QR code during setup.
I have no headsets at all and no Vr experience.
What are the real (non meme) reasons why I shouldn’t buy a meta quest 3? If it’s bad enough, which alternative do you recommend that isn’t like $1000 and can use with my phone if I wanted to?

You can get a Quest 2 for much cheaper.
If money is not a concern for you, skip Meta's line of products all together and get a Valve Index kit.
>>449782725
I really like the CV1 but the resolution leaves a lot to be desired. I really don't want to shill out 700$ for the new quest (costs that much in eastern eu currently when preordered from a local store)
Then again I only play beat saber mostly so I'm not even sure it's worth upgrading just for that. But I'd probably play other things if I didn't have to bother with sensors so... I'll just think about it
You have to be retarded to buy Index in 2023.
>>449787629
Inside out tracking is always going to be inferior to outside in by virtue of it being easier to occlude. That being said, it's still gud enough for playing games and only really becomes an issue if you want to move to FBT for VRchat due to IMUs having inherent drift. If you are only using the Quest for PCVR, internal storage doesn't matter. I have no fucking clue what you're asking about your phone for, though.
>>449788283

the best way to get into FBT is to buy the 650$ gamestop refurb index kit, then sell the index hmd. you end up with 2 basestations and 2 index knuckles for 400$ which is a good deal.
or keep the index hmd and use it as a dongle for the knuckles (thats what i do)
but yes buying it new is retarded

Don't really get why you can't wait after waiting just fine for 7 years, but whatever.
Next couple of years will have a lot of good headset releases.
Invest in a 4090 instead.
>>449787629
Just get quest 2. If you prefer the Chinese spying on you over the Americans, you can opt for a pico headset.
>>449788779
the "compute unit" idea will live or fail based on how apples design is received.
but generally i think the big players have decided that its better to just wireless connect to a real computer than to try to put a computer on your waist. we are still in the early stages so the latency of 20-40ms is a small tradeoff, in the future itll probably get much lower.
>>449788559
Anon asked for the downsides to a Quest, and that's the big one. Lighthouses are very nice to have once you're used to not instantly losing tracking the moment the camera stops seeing your hand, which is the big reason to get an Index in 2023. I don't give a fuck about muh data collection and ethical concerns about buying a piece of tech, but the Quest does have one major downside from a technical perspective and it would be lying to pretend it doesn't exist. Of course, the Index has it's own variety of problems from it's age and in 2023, I'd recommend someone buying a Quest #>1 as their entry point to VR and then building a lighthouse ecosystem around it if they really want FBT rather then dealing with the aged HMD component of the Index as well as higher initial investment.
>>449788723
Hate to break it for you, but index is inside out.
>>449788283
Still the best overall package if you want to go the FBT route later down the road.
>>449789042
It's not. Especially for that price.
1. Wired
2. Fresnel
3. No eye/facetracking
4. Garbage controllers
If you want FBT, just get standalone vive trackers later.
idk how anyone uses a wired headset for FBT, i have the fucking vr-wire II pulley system drilled into my ceiling and it takes one or two 360s and i have to walk backwards to untangle it. completely useless for actually moving around, when you have to try to remain facing the same direction you were in.
slapping a tundra tracker on my qpro for FBT is the best thing i ever did
Just grabben two vie 3.0 body trackers that were 30% off because they had been returned to the store.
I still need one more but I feel like this was a bit of a lucky steal.

>>449789479

>>449789012
Valve's patent defines otherwise, if you want to be very pedantic, and if you don't, you'd admit that people generally use those two as shorthand for lighthouse based solutions where you have an external data point that is used to determine position vs purely self tracked instead of actually talking about the position of the sensor these days.
>>449789591
>you'd admit that people generally use those two as shorthand for lighthouse

Right after you realize that having a constant emission source that provides positional data means that which one of the two phoning home to the computer with the result doesn't matter.

An optical tracking system, comprising; a movable tracked object comprising one or more rigidly attached optical sensors; and one or more optical transmitters, wherein each transmitter comprises two rotors that sweep two optical beams across a tracking volume on orthogonal axes during repeating sweep cycles, wherein each transmitter emits an omni-directional synchronization optical pulse detectable by said optical sensors at the beginning of each said sweep cycle; and wherein each of said optical sensors computes an angular location within said tracking volume by calculating the elapsed time between detecting said synchronization pulse and detecting said optical beams.
>optical sensors computes an angular location within said tracking volume by calculating the elapsed time between detecting said synchronization pulse and detecting said optical beams.
>the elapsed time between detecting said synchronization pulse and detecting said optical beams.
>I am too dumb to understand how how sweeping the beam encodes time data if it doesn't literally tell it what time it is
>>449792167
It does. It can only "see" the laser though.
>>449792167
That's exactly how it works. It sees the lighthouses.
>>449792242
So sad that you can't even read the things you've copypasted.
Nothing is encoded. All calculated are made by the sensors.
If you still think that there is encoding takes place somewhere, can you show us where exactly?
>>the elapsed time between detecting said synchronization pulse and detecting said optical beams.
It's just a timer, there is no encoding needed.
>>449792252
>>449792289
it doesnt "see" a laser at all, the laser sweep triggers the timer which it uses to determine the location. its like saying a light-switch sees the sine wave of the electric when you flip the switch, its nonsense.
>>449790860
Quest Pro + Vive Camera Trackers (or Haritora/Slimes) should be close enough
>>449792615
What do you think a sensor is?
What do you think a digital camera is?
>>449792510
>there is no data encoded
>what do you mean my tracking will be fucked if I delay the sync pulse
The funny thing is that you're even wrong about no data being encoded in the laser itself since 2.0s do encode data in the sweep to identify which lighthouse the sweep belongs to.
>>449792762
>WTF IF I MOVE THE WALLS MY TRACKING BREAKS??
Any more retarded garbage from you or should I just accept the concession?
>>449792762
>The funny thing is that you're even wrong about no data being encoded in the laser itself since 2.0s do encode data in the sweep to identify which lighthouse the sweep belongs to.
Really grasping at straws, huh?
>>449786389
Brightness is about the same, with the vignette on the outside 1/3rd of the lenses bringing that down to about half brightness.
>>449790193
All of them (except Rift CV1 and PSVR1) get information of it's position relative to outside source.
That source is markers, in lighthouse the marker is an IR beacon, which 1 pixel cameras (lighthouse sensor dimples on the hmd/controllers) see. In camera based tracking cameras identify some features on your walls to use as beacons and get position information in relation to those.
But all that is a slow absolute positional update to correct drift 30/60 times a second. Main tracking is always done by the IMUs on all headsets.
the difference is that lighthouse tracked headsets arent doing the positional math onboard, the computer is doing it then sending it back to the headset/trackers/etc.
which is why both the cv1 and index are outside in tracked and the quest line which does the position data on-board is inside out
>>449793639
Wrong again. The lighthouse tracked headset, controllers, and trackers all calculate their own position then send it to the computer.
Guess I'll be waiting for the deckard or quest 4
>>449794039
this is false, and is why you can inject data in the upstream back to the hmd. if it was all done on the headset itself you wouldnt be able to do that. if you dont know what youre talking about just stfu.
Only retarded newfags call lighthouse outside in.
There is no point arguing with them.
>>449791905
Even on lighthouse 1.0 IR blast and the laser have AM modulation to seperate them from the sun or whatnot. Additionally AM modulation is used to encode basestation ID or to identify if it's a flash of floodlight or laser sweep. Angles are calculated by the time passed between IR floodlight flash and laser sweep.
On lighthouse 2.0 the lasers have even higher AM modulation frequency and encode laser angle relative to lighthouse and lighthouse id, which lighthouse sensors read from the laser beam.
Lighthouse is not constant source of light, but it also doesn't receive any communication from devices in the tracked zone. It doesn't care about amount of receivers.
Yes, the closest analogue is GPS. But in the end it's inside out, as sensors in the tracked device look at the world and orient themselves in the world, albeit using specially crafted features you place in the world.
Camera (on headset) based is inside out because it looks at the world and finds features from preexisting enviroment (you also need some lightbult to allow it to work)
Rift CV1 is outside in, as the cameras/sensors are in the world and look at the emissions of the HMD leds to locate where the HMD is. HMD doesn't know it's location. You cannot track more hmd without adding more cameras
SteamVR beta has an exit button now

apple's compute is on the hmd itself
the pack is just a battery or you plug into a wall
Outside in - Index
Inside out - Quest
It's that simple and popping blood vessels over this just shows how fucking autistic you are and should touch some grass
>>449794561
Outside In - CV1
Inside out (lighthouse based) - Index
Inside out (camera based) - Quest
It's that simple.
>>449794208
lighthouse based hmds do not inject positioning data from PC, they only show a picture sent from the GPU.
But it's also true that Lighthouse based devices don't really compute their position fully. They measure IMUs, measure light pulses, do some precomputation, but final computation of the headset position is indeed done on the PC by the lighthouse driver.
It doesn't matter, it's still inside out, as it's sensors are on device looking at the world and seeing IR light.
>>449790984
the lighthouses have no clue where you are or where they are
they're just dumb units that shit out lasers
lighthouse devices compute position based on results from 3 or so minimums diodes receiving a hit and do some math based on that
>transgender freaks are trying to redefine words again
it's so tiresome
Now that the quest 3 is out what other upcoming headset is next to release?

Initial impressions from messing around on quest 3 yesterday:
-Calibration with trackers and controllers when not using uniform lighthouse hardware is aids and I will now pour one out for questies
-Display: Mogs my index into another dimension and looks drastically better than the quest 2 and vive pro that I've used before. Mine came in with no dead pixels that I can notice. Glare on the lenses felt notably lower than my index though I need to do more testing on different maps. I could barely notice the fov difference because the edge to edge clarity on the lenses was so much better than the index that my brain was struggling to acknowledge that I no longer had to physically move my head to read text outside of a time sized circle like on my index. Outer edges are darker which is a bit weird but it feels like a small price to pay for the new clarity.
-Power: Even while wired and using a stronger than base brick/power cable to feed a third party link cable I couldn't run the headset indefinitely. I'd ballpark that I couldn't get more than 5-6 hours of power on time before I'd need to take it off and charge and maybe 2 hours with it from full charge not plugged in best case.
-Audio: built in audio is mediocre and for some reason the mic sounds worse than the quest 2 to the point that I suspect it's a software level issue because it's that bad. It is really not good.
-Comfort: Still largely shitty like quest 2 with base strap though it sits a bit less shitty on the face since the center of mass is shifted more towards your face. Aftermarket strap is still mandatory.
Honestly out of everything aside from figuring out the cancer of space calibrator my main concern was that I can't get the fucking thing to charge while in use. I was using it more or less full send via virtual desktop but even turning the brightness down and switching from the supplied 18w adapter to a 45w samsung adapter/cable just would not result in even neutral battery burn.
>>449794561
i find this line of shitposting hilarious
especially in a space where boundaries and delimiters shift constantly
if you looked at the index in isolation it would seem to have inside-out tracking as it requires external beam emitters to determine its location
only when you consider the lighthouses as part of the system it suddenly becomes outside-in tracking
the oculus uses similar operations but instead of relying on external beam emitters it uses external landmarks (SLAM)
in isolation this seems like inside out tracking but if you consider these landmarks to be part of the system...
>>449797773
Be the change you want to see
>>449800181
i know sometimes the charging can be a software issue. i've used the same cable and power banks for my headsets and there was a point where it started to not charge to full while in use, but than a couple weeks later it went back to working properly
>>449800181
I've never got those third party chink cables to work. They don't transfer enough power and I can't find a proper data/power usb-c injector online
Imagine having a headset that can't stay on indefinitely. Imagine how bad it's going to be when the shitty battery degrades and you've got a headset that powers down after three or four hours.
>>449800664
I suppose to be fair I was using a kuject cable which generally seemed favorable. I haven't tried to play directly plugged into the brick. I'd imagine the quest 3 draws more power than the quest 2 and it will take a few months before accessories tailor made for it start cropping up. If I get particularly annoyed I might shill out for the expensive first party cable but if I can scrape by with paying zucc less I probably will.
>>449800886
Imagine actually wanting to have a bigger and stronger chink shit battery all the VR headsets use right next to your head where it can explode at any moment due to chink RNG
>>449800886
Funny enough I believe the mid to high end pimax headsets have this issue as well
