Don't sweat about it too much. Use Thrys editor to find textures that are 4k and scale them down lower. Make it a goal to have avi texture memory at least 100 MB or below 200 at least. Generate imposter for the avi on the site and just wait for it to arrive on main branch one day(tm)(c)(valve time) and be done with it.

DO NOT BUY VRROCK LENS INSERTS
For the last few months I've thought that either my eyes were faulty and I was getting cross eyed or that the Quest3 was shit (since there seems to really be a binocular overlap issue + vignetting I thought that was what I was experiencing) only to remove the lens inserts and realize they were at fault. I couldn't focus on anything on a distance and had to reduce my IPD from from 63 to the absolute minimum to make it somewhat usable. But the fucking lens inserts were at fault, they distort the optics.

I bought VRoptician lens inserts before for both my Quest2 and QuestPro and those worked flawlessly (I was using Q2 over Q3 because of this) so it didn't cross my mind that could be the cause.

So if you are looking into buying lens inserts, based on my experience I recommend VROptician over VRRock. Also VROptician ships from Germany while VRRock does so from China that should've made me cautious.

All I'm interested in with VR is developing seated, single player, "dont have to move your body too much at all" games with Unity but it seems that the vast majority of the game development has to be done on the desktop with the headset off and by the time I do get done with a significant portion of the game that the next headset will be out. Because of this fact, I am unsure if I really want to upgrade my existing quest 2 to a quest 3 despite everyone saying the quest 3 is a much better headset. Thoughts?

Stereo images show things from a slightly different perspective to emulate the difference in picture between two eyes, focus distance is a different thing. Maybe think of your eye as a camera, if you've ever used any camera with bigger sensor, you know that things too close and too far from where your focus point is are blurry. Notice how there's none of that happens in VR, everything is always razor sharp regardless of where are you looking. That's because even though your perception of distance is 'emulated' by stereoscopic image, this is two images from a slightly different perspective, but focus thing always stays the same, it's always set to be static no matter where are you looking. Usually around 1-2m away from you.

So, eye can get lazy when it never has to 'refocus' itself, apparently.

The index gets so much right that it's hard to find a replacement without compromising in something. Index but lighter and with a nicer screen would basically be a killer headset. A quest 3 with eye tracking and index audio would be a killer headset.

Check out some basic soldering videos first where they use flux to wet a joint and then the iron to heat it up.
You'll need:
A half decent variable temp iron ($50 is about right)
Soldering braid
No clean flux
Solder sucker
Something to hold the circuit board while you're working. Get a good stand with solid supports (careful where you hold the circuitboard, the connectors are fragile)

And to get into the thing:
a T5 screwdriver
Prying tools
tweezers for the ribbon cables
(I like the basic bitch ass ifixit kits since it contains all this)

Main challenges: Desoldering multiple via holes at once is tricky with just an iron but you can pull apart the old stick into pieces that can be desoldered more easily. Get the solder wet. The key is to get enough heat into the solder that it is liquid; when it is liquid it doesn't hold the parts at all (besides surface tension) and very little force is needed. Gentle amounts of force, and heat applied with flux will get components out. Flux gets solder to stick to copper and other metal. Such as braid. Use the sucker for large amounts of solder and braid for smaller amounts. Don't be afraid to add extra solder to make it easier, you can always remove it. And be careful of other components; those microcomponents fall of really easily if you apply heat to them accidentally. Ideally you want short bursts of high heat for desoldering, with good contact.

I have a BSB and I sort of have to agree, especially when you put it next to Quest 3, a headset that is $500 less but comes with passthrough, mixed reality, hand tracking, built-in audio, wireless, high FoV, next to zero glare, near full edge to edge clarity, etc.

I've gotten this feedback before and considered it, but after weighing the benefits I still came to the conclusion that splitting it was best. For one thing, choosing between wednesday and sunday is hard since one or the other isn't universally better for everybody. I know of conflicting events that happen on both days so choosing one would mean somebody gets short end of the stick. My computer is connected to wifi and not ethernet for the internet. Connecting a quest via steamlink is not recommended while your computer is connected to wifi and dunks on the streaming quality. This is apparently because the wifi connection strength/bandwidth/whatever is split between connections so that's not enough to stream over. Because I don't have the ability to connect to the wifi with an ethernet cable is there another way to get steamlink to work? I have another router around somewhere that I can plug into my computer and (potentially?) set up that as the hotspot for just the steamlink part. Don't know if that will even work or if it's even possible though. I've done a lot of googling and it looks like no one has even tried to do what I'm doing (which is why I think I'm just retarded).

Okay so I figured it out. Turns out I need to connect my quest to the new wireless connection my pc's router has and it'll work fine. So yes I am retarded. This did however cause an unexpected problem where it completely deleted the IP address in the regular wifi connection's configuration and somehow stopped me from being able to connect to anything that wasn't hosted by google (and could go through google's dns). Pic related. Switching that back to "obtain an IP address manually" solved it. Wild.
Anyway wireless vr is great. I'm so used to having a wire I keep rooting my legs in place and just turning with my body instead of my legs. Tried out C-Smash VRS, a squash block breaking arcade game from sega currently on standalone systems and psvr for £15/$20. It's kinda of meh.
There's an insane amount of correction on the ball when you hit it, in so far as you need real edge cases to even hit the ball against a wall with how much it curves back to the centre. Default setting for movement provide such a narrow vignette that you loose track of the ball. Gameplay is simple break the block stuff but can be good if you get in the rhythm (and already enjoy squash). Racket feels a little short compared to the real thing, feels like a slightly large ping pong racket. "Story mode" is just an obtuse way to string around different levels with a solar system like map, with smash (a charge ability for the racket) and score upgrades along the way but it's just an excuse to play arcade levels strung together. There's also nobody on multiplayer, played a couple Vs bot matches while waiting for all 4 gamemodes and nothing popped. I'll probably refund it as I won't touch it like the rest of my standalone games but if you can pirate it or (on the quest store) refund it after a couple hours it might be for you.
P.S. if you are short you will not be able to hit balls that scrape along the ceiling.

Just tried a rhythm game via quest link with a Q3 and I'm a bit amazed at the low latency.

I've only ever really played FTB/FTB-style packs so I'm kind of partial to those.
One of those packs more focused around adventure/dungeons/RPG-style elements might be a better fit for VR but I don't really know.

I maintain around 60 but definitely get big drops, i only really noticed any black screen issues if i was using any renderer but the AEW one, also gonna note the view inside the headset is not really like the webms, it's got some weird artifacting around the edges of objects that doesnt appear on the recordings, i assume it's due to fsr shenanigans, but it's much more bearable with a higher resolution, unfortunately my 1080's a little old now
