should I get a 4070 ti super, or 4070 super? I will be streaming to my quest 3. the performance doesn't seem that much for the $200 higher price tag, but I've heard that vram is really important for vr, especially vrchat
however, if vram is that important, would I not be better off getting the rx 7900 xt, considering it has 20gb of vram, and more or less performs the same as the ti super?

VRAM is important, but you're generally fine if you've got at least 16GB. I think you could still get by with 12GB though.
I've occasionally run into driver issues with AMD for VR, although it depends heavily on the card. 5700XT was mostly fine, but I had so many issues with the 6800XT, I returned it and grabbed a used 3090 instead.
Assuming you don't run into issues, the 7900XT should be the best card on paper, but it's hard for me to personally recommend AMD for VR anymore.

VR software is mostly cobbled together by indie faggots, and some of them only have nvidia cards to test on. Older AMD cards with more mature drivers can work well, and I got a 6950XT after the 7000's came out, but I had to update to recent drivers to get it stable. The 7900XT had performance issues in Windows in VR when it first came out, which might have been fixed by now, but I haven't kept up with the news on it.

VRAM scaling is non-linear, so the less you have, the more it hurts. 16GB is the recommended standard now. The 24 on a 4090 will let you raise visual quality more, while with 8GB you can get crashed by memory leaks. I don't think 12 will be futureproof enough.

Weird because I have both a 5700XT and 6800XT and have no problems with either for VR.

Supposedly the encoders on Nvidia are better if you are using Quest/Airlink but I have had zero issues just turning the bitrate up. I get better visuals with H265 than H264, and as far as the Nvidia/AMD distinction goes, I'm pretty sure that's literally it. I don't even have a fancy WiFi6 router like everyone says you need, just the regular plain ass one my ISP sent. It's fine, just set the resolution and bitrate appropriately.

I genuinely think a lot of the issues people have with VR and hardware are just plain down to their own incompetence and poor PC builds (not saying that applies to you Anon, just in general). For example I can't think of any reason people are still recommending Virtual Desktop all the time when there's literally zero need for it, but that's just where we are at. It's a small community and most of that community is full of shit, so bad information gets passed around.

Ambushing, shooting better, positioning and awareness were 90% of combat. The other 10% was the gear; and gear you were comfortable and familiar with was more effective than 'high level' gear. My 5700XT had a ton of issues on launch, but was mostly functional after that. I did have occasional issues with drivers that completely broke some games like Pavlov and performance issues in games like Budget Cuts that should've been no trouble for the hardware though.
At the time that I got the 6800XT, it had issues with the latest drivers that kept it from consistently recognizing my Index and smaller issues in a few games. Downgrading was a temporary workaround, but came with a substantial performance hit to the games that did work fine on the latest drivers. Glad it's fine now, but I wasn't going to hold onto a card with no guarantee it'd ever actually get fixed.

With H.265 it's not as much of a quality difference. It's nice to have a decent H.264 encoder for latency sensitive cases and faster movement though.

It's either better than you think, or you're blind to encoding artifacts.

It's been significantly more consistent for me than any of the alternatives on a cheap router that I probably shouldn't even bother trying to use.
Outside of that, stuff like HEVC 10-bit and hand tracking support/controller emulation is nice.
Sure there's no "need" for it, and I'd always recommend trying the free stuff first, but it's not like it there aren't real reasons to prefer it.

These past weeks I've been using my headset as a virtual screen while laying in bed, ps4 controller in hand and playing shitty rpgmaker hgames until 3 in the morning. I'm rotting inside.

Seems like interference between the networks for the first one, I'd try that again but with different channels on the dedicated router. Can also make sure you're only running the network you're connecting to and not anything extra.

But to answer your question, no, there is no noticeable extra delay added by the encryption on secure wifi. There is theoretically delay but it's so small that you can't even measure it, let alone perceive it
Wifi has latency spikes cause by all kinds of stuff which is literally a factor of millions worse than the encryption. Start worrying about the frequency bands that are in use in your vicinity instead. Or the fact that wifi is inherently half duplex which means there will always be tiny variable delays
The human brain and your eye has a rather low reaction time so you probably won't even feel it at that point, if you ever played a game with vsync on and noticed like 0.1 seconds of input lag, the wifi delay caused by encryption is about 100x smaller than THAT. You're seriously fine

Decided to finally get my drivers license
Instead of paying out the ass for lessons a few hours a week over months, I'm considering paying considerably less out the ass for some physical goods like the G920 wheel + shifter so I can practice as much as I want in something like VR Asseto then doing just a few real lessons when I'm confident before hitting the driving test

it's both very realistic, and not realistic at all. Shifiting h-shifter doesn't feel like shifting a normal manual car at all, clutch operation doesn't feel like real-life clutch operation because you don't feel miniscule pulls and pushes through a sim, FFB is not meant to simulate 1:1 what real car's steering wheel does at all. Overall it's a different feel. On the other hand, long time ago I was putting values into assetto to see how my IRL car would behave on a my local track that i've roughly modelled and put into game, and results of putting a different engine curve from a quick google results for a stock engine dyno (plus other very minor changes) were considerably accurate in terms of overall feel/speed/car's performance once I've got the engine in real life. Car even started doing a minor lift-off oversteer in the middle of one specific corner with a new engine, just like it did in sim once I've put the values in. Even change in suspension was more or less similar, though it was super difficult to get the right values so I just eyeballed half of it.

Sims are considerably accurate, but they don't feel like real life driving at all. Because of that, I doubt you'll find much use of it in driving's license. But don't worry, you'll get it for sure, I believe in you, the main challenge of driving license is rules and behavior, not car operation, anyone can do a basic hill start or training turn thing after 30 hours of mandatory training.

I dunno how detailed the traffic simulation gets for any car games with VR support; the most detailed out of the box I can think of is American/Euro Truck Simulator (which does have cars too iirc, modded at least). And like the others say, that's the main thing you have to learn, unless you're racing. I'd say it's very different for the purpose of learning how to drive from scratch. Let's take the easiest example, starting a car and moving out. Assetto doesn't even take engine shutdown into account, engines can operate at 1rpm. So, let's take my favorite little thing, Live for Speed, Live for Speed will shut down your engine when RPM drops low enough and it'll even simulate clutch burn if you slip it long enough and hard enough. Even with that sim, you still won't feel the pull if you'll be janky with it, you won't even notice how rough you are on the start, plus there's no car in there to accurately replicate the complete lack of power from 1.2 city shitbox engine as you start from standstill and therefore game won't let you stall the engine when green light comes just like you'd do in reality. It won't let you smell the burned clutch either when you get frustrated and overdo it.

I'd say it's very different when you want to learn it, and never had an opportunity to try the real car.

If you have a headset already, try out https://github.com/mdovgialo/steam-vr-wheel (old but, probably still works) for motion controls with a cheap assetto or ATS key. It's just steering, no pedals or shifter, so you won't get the full experience, but it's way better than a joystick, and then you'll know better whether buying actual hardware is worth it.

For me it's always been not understanding where the fuck the end of the car is, looking through the windshield as a passenger I just see this weird shiny reflective curve down in front of me. Not sure about beamNG, I can only recommend LFS as a game that does that, it's the only one I know of. rFactor does engine stall, but I don't think it cares about letting player burn their clutch. I'd probably expect BeamNG to simulate both burning clutch and engine stall, given that this game is trying to "simulate a car" rather than to be a racing sim, but I can't promise anything because I never played beamNG outside of exporting automation cars and then fucking around for a minute or two.

Yes. The movement mechanics are unique to VR and very satisfying to master, it even inspired a few 'Gorrila Tag-like' games that provide a more structured experience. If you have a Quest you should at least give it a try. I busted open my hand a few times playing it with /vrg/. Hopefully we play again some day.

Anyway quick update: the ITR2 patch made it a bit better. Coop is now almost playable, but has a few major problems that make it unrecommended. The main one is that when the host manipulates some items, the coop partner basically freezes until the goofy failed client sync finishes all the physics collisions.
If they fixed that and a few crashes I'd say it'd be ready to actually play. And maybe a few more sync things with missions on the tablet and such.
