That was an awesome event, great thanks to the organizers and everybody who participated, it takes a lot of effort and courage to create something, getting up on a stage in front of everybody and getting judged (and not forgetting the inevitable roasting in the thread). I think the judges were the only aspect I didn't like. Most of the time it felt like there were giving scores out VERY inconsistent.

In the future I'd like to see a voting menu for the whole audience (0-10, basically averaging the votes from everyone) with the judges being completely reduced to funny commentary, but no real voting power.

If you're gigabroke slimevr isn't great but it's usable if you're willing to put in the effort and have some basic soldering skills. Cheapest usable fbt by a good margin. Making avatars is really entirely dependent on what you want. Game rips aren't that bad, modeled from scratch requires more effort and skillset then 99.9% of people will ever want to deal with, and just playing mix and match with assets is in the middle. Most popular bases on gumroad or booth will have a variety of cloths made by creators designed and weighted to them so you can kinda mix and match then start fitting cloths intended for other stuff once you've got more of a grasp on blender/unity. Most people here get babysat through the unity and basic blender work flow a few times until they're steady enough on their feet to learn proper.

Just ask anyone to get you started on models, they'll give you such a good rundown it'll basically be braindead.
There are tools and optimised processes to fit models you can even put everything on in 20 minutes in Unity alone and optimise your VRAM down under 50mb with Thry's tools with a cool outfit to boot. Polygons might be a bit high with this method but that's alright as long as your download size is ~15mb.

Now that I have a bit more understanding of some rendering techniques and the source engine. (You should read through all of valve publications at least the vr ones if you haven't).
I decided I am going to replay through Alyx with dev commentary on so I can really appreciate the advances of source 2 and the devs decisions.

This first one im just appreciating the specular and trying to look at the contact shadows/AO.
It seems really strong for your hands but that just may be because they are allowed to clip into objects a little bit and being rounded.
I've seen it really obvious with CS2 player models against walls.
Honestly I can't think of another game that has AO 1 to 1 like this.
Also weird how the tape looks to change lighting when picked up.

I turn on subtitles and raise the graphics to max a bit later.

You can see when I pick up an object it dithers out the casted shadow and it does retain some kind of self shadow though.
I am honestly unsure for what reason it does this to the point I wanna email someone at valve.

I bit the bullet (pun intended) on Metal Hellsinger on Quest and... it's shit. Graphics downgrade and some performance problems in busy scenes I expected. What I didn't expect was that the controls are absolutely horrendous. There's weird delay to shooting, reload gestures don't work half of the time or trigger randomly, shit binded to joystick presses, weird floaty arms and several game freezes when navigating menus. Plus horrendous load times and flat cinematics.
Simply put, this looks, plays and runs much worse than the mod for the flatscreen version.
39 USD + 20 USD for all the launch day DLC if you want to unlock all weapons. Refunded and forgotten. PSVR version is apparently just as bad so I doubt PCVR will be any better.
TL;DR - don't bother, just play the flat version with VR mod, it's better in every way

My work schedule is fucked so I can't ever really give times. Hosting is extremely easy though. All you have to do if go into the circle menu > preferences > bonemenu > fusion > matchmaking > start server and then give other people your steam id to use as the join code. Hosting also works for pirates somehow. As for mods it doesn't automatically download client/host mod lists so you have to collaborate with everyone in the server beforehand to have the same mod list. Mods for objects you don't have will just be invisible (but still work) and avatars you don't have will just be wireframe skeletons. I've made a pastebin https://pastebin.com/R8WtbNf2 with the mods I've been using to streamline this a bit. If you find anything cool or make a custom avatar I can add it to the list for you.

Ok, SteamVR fails to launch with Virtual Desktop out of nowhere today. Got some IPC error key component not working, tried to verify SteamVR game files but still got the issue.

Don't worry, we have responsible people ready in the wing now for an expanded exploration system.
We can split people into groups now for the smaller explore maps but congregate into the bigger maps in a cycle.

Nothing against big maps but a lot of the good interactive maps in VRchat are hard capped to like 24 and 32 people max even sometimes 8.

I'm the NA Explo host and I prefer SEA explo as well. It's largely just a number and demographic difference more than anything. That and most of the people from that timezone all know each other well as it's much more isolated and quiet. I used to run explo much closer to SEA before I started posting about it on thread with just a handful usually 3-10 people and it was much more similar. I'd run the same way but it just doesn't work in NA hours. .

I find the idea of "group is too big" to be a red herring. Since VRchat as a game has no limits on instance duplications.

What if you develop a few friends to lead other smaller explorations within NA? Meaning for each time an explore gets too big, get the other guy to split it off as they lead that specific one.
Coordinate map to drop here or in private DMs.

Maybe even a more permanent grouping for the week. a 24-32 group that sticks together for this week's NA explore. Then for next week they're shuffled again naturally.

It's more than a system thing though I'm sure I could optimize stuff. There are several issues, some of which are just inherent to NA or at least larger timezones. NAs fucking love camping in spawn for example. The other issues, for example are that due to the timezone being more active is usually ends up gaining gravity as the main instance where people start joining because it's where people are not because it's explo which snowballs into 15 people sitting in spawn every map. There has been JM in recent history running explo when I am unwilling to and I think KS has offered before but I'd asked off and on for well over a year and almost nobody had any real interest in taking over or cohosting though some people are nice and send me maps sometimes. That all aside it's harder to split people up into small groups even if I wanted to go to that effort because NA is not even a fraction as tight knit as SEA hours.

These are how I go about SEA explore
Instance priority list hierarchy:
1)/vrg/ user (priority slot)
2)4chan user
3)rando (asked to go on red and kicked if disruptive or we need map space)

This system is used cause I love /vrg/ and wish to prioritize the limited slots we have on maps for people who actually are here with us.

I can’t believe I am saying this cause for SEA explore an still able to cope with the questioning weekly of white names.
But I can easily see how it can get over when there are so many people.

Maybe for NA explore a group only instance is actually needed. So only people in that group can see the map and join. We’ve been traditionally a Friends+ community but if the amount of work is too exponentially exhaustive in NA.

Clamping down on it with the system VRC already provides may be the key
