First post for the uncomfortable truth

>Deckard is yet another XR2 device.
>SLAM camera based tracking.
>No lighthouse compatability
>Controllers are tracked by cameras on the headset. So no tracking behind your back or whatever.
>No full body trackers which would just work. Welcome to hybrid hell.
>Controllers have optional shitty straps. Controllers have no fingertracking.
>Deckard is running Arch for ARM with deckard interface for VR interface, which will always be barely functional and half complete.
>No display port input, WiFi streaming from PC only, but most likely with eye tracking and foveated compression.
>has waydroid android emulation layer, so devs can upload standalone android APKs built for standalone games to run on Deckard with emulation
>The games will run worse than on Quest due to emulation layer slowing them down
>Valve will push for "you can play all flat games on big theatre mode overlay, see our controllers have all the inputs from XBOX360 controllers!"

Index was a peak of VR HMD design, it only went downhill from there

It is over, and I fail to see why you should but the deckard over a Quest. The best thing about Valve VR was native SteamVR integration.
And Index controller is how VR controllers should be, you can let go of them, and grabbing comes natural.
What the fuck is Valve thinking?

while the thread was seething, i just enjoyed a couple more rounds of pavlov in public lobbies of snd with snoy crossplayers, on my index, and you know what, i am content.
even if deckard is trash, even if someday i will have to leave my beloved index behind, one thing that will forever stay with me is this medium, VR, vidya, the friends i met along the way, and this industry as a whole.

what im saying is, i think the most important part of all of this is VR, not the device we're using to access this medium.

>What am I in for?
how is your home wifi? wireless PCVR on shitty slow wifi is a uniquely bad experience. If you are planning on using a cable, make sure it's USB 3.0 or 3.1. Otherwise the bandwidth is too shitty.
Did you buy a head strap? The one that comes with the quest is dogshit and front-heavy.
Controller straps are a nice-to-have but not as needed.

>connecting to PC
is a massive pain in the ass if you try to do it through meta's shitty software. Install steam link on your headset and as long as steam is running on your PC it will connect easy peasy. If you use the beta versions of steam link (on headset) and steamvr (on pc) then the no-controller hand tracking that the quest can do will work with games, just be aware that some games don't support hand controls very well, so you will be using your controllers.

>gaming on the quest without a PC
Nice when you can because there is no latency, no shitty video compression, and no pic related, but the limited processing power of the quest means it can only really play older titles, indies, and games very specifically made for the quest.

VRC on the native quest app is really limited
If you buy Metro through Meta rather than steam you get both the PC and quest native versions
Batman is pretty good I'm told
plenty of older titles have quest native ports, and lots of indie too

Your experience may be different, but the first time I tried VR about a month ago I got really motion sick, but it no longer happens so much. Alyx seems to be the worst game when it comes to inducing motion sickness.

>re: VR Chat
VR Chat is a much more exhaustive platform than I ever thought. People make a lot of cool shit in VRC. You might be surprised at what you find.

Thanks for showing up for exploration everyone. Apologies for the initial hiccup, I didn't realize 4chan would convert the unicode C in my display name to an actual C, making it impossible to search for me on the VRC website. I will directly link my profile the next time this is run, as well as a link to the starting world instance. After we initially filled, it looks like everything went fairly smoothly.

The 80 person instances and tipsy Tuesdays sort of things are not /vrg/. They are mostly spoonfed randos imported by the failed normie invaders. Many of our people also became corrupted by associating with outside ERP circles and abandon chan culture for pronouns.

For NA hours, some of us awkward autistic oldfags still have our small gatherings in VRC away from everyone else. You wont see our instances shilled here. The best way to get to know us is by joining (not VRC) game lobbies. If you see a game being hosted for NA hours it's mostly us. All the frat boy posers don't care about actual games.

Some tips for the control scheme here as it's heavily reliant on motion controls and the github doesn't explain everything

>You switch guns with your right hand's grip button
>Reload is the north most face button on your right hand
>Bottom button uses grenades
>Trigger shoots, obviously
>Flicking the right stick up jumps
>Top face button on left hand is pause/menu
>Grip button on left hand will let you 2 hand aim with any gun
>Left trigger activates the scope on guns with it, ADS IRL to properly use it. Does not need to be used 2 handed
>Crouching requires you to physically crouch IRL
>Melee requires you to swing your controller forward with a little force. Can be left OR right controller if you wanna use one hand for shooting and the other melee
>The crosshairs are generally accurate but don't feel quite perfect in aligning with the sense of depth VR provides, especially with the default gun spread instead of being 1:1 with where you aim like VR native shoorters. Pistol was okay headshooting but ADSing with scope is much more reliable. Pistol actually feels balanced since headshots take a little more skill
>Hipfire the whole time is still 100% fine
>Cause melee is not quite as quick and precision headshots are a little more difficult, game difficult feels slightly higher than flat. So I'd recommend starting on normal to get a feel for it.

I also noticed that the "look around" prompt in the opening stage wouldn't progress and let me out of the tube. If you encounter this, physically move your mouse and it should then work. By default, it's on Snap turning as well. To change to smooth go into the "VR" folder and change snap turning to "false" in the config file. Config file is how you'll do most of your editing, no ingame VR options.

First impressions are 9/10. Played the two stages and it felt borderline native sides the crosshairs being a bit finnicky. Could use some smoothing on aiming but still feels great.

Give me the rest of Halo in VR now.

If you just have one laying around, then I think it's worth messing around with it to see if you like VR before you grab something else. Support is getting phased out, but depending on the Windows version you should still be able to use it.
Quest 3 is probably the way to go after that if you like it, but it's not really on sale for Black Friday anyways.

Christmas Carol 2025 - https://rentry.org/yc4gqewn
M is busy this year so we're filling in.
This year we're doing a rendition of Do They Know it's Christmas Time for the 40th anniversary of Band Aid.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bjQzJAKxTrE

We plan to start filming no later than Friday so when the time gets closer we'll release names of recorders to seek out to get you and your voice in this year's video. Just seek them out in VRChat when they're usually on and they should help facilitate the process. There'll be a hard deadline on filming for the 8th of December 1200 UTC in order to give enough time for file transfer and the video editor to work his magic.

Here are the adapted lyrics for this year (with syllable count):

It’s Christmas time [4]
There’s no need to be outside [7]
At Christmas time [4]
We let in love and stop throwing shade [9]

And in our games of plenty [7]
We can chuck a few grenades[7]
Throw your arms around the thread [7]
At Christmas time [4]

Write a reply [4]
To give out another (You) [7]
At Christmas time [4]
It’s hard, but when you’re shitposting [8]

There’s a world outside your instance [8]
And it’s a world furries appear [8]
With the kids that play on mobile [8]
Getting groomed by bitter queers [7]

And the TDAs that dwell there [8]
Are adored by simps who coom [7]
Well, tonight thank God it’s them [7]
Instead of (You) [4]

And the Deckard won’t be out again this Christmas time [13]
The only headset dropped this year is VIVE’s [11]
(OOOOOOOHHHH)
Unique IPs don’t grow, [6]
Nor games nor demos flow [6]
[Everyone Sing] Do they boot up VR games at all? [9]
(OOOOOOOOHHHH)

(Here’s to (You))[3] Making mods to have our fun [7]
(Here’s to them)[3] Half Life 3 is nearly done[7]
[Everyone Sing]Do they boot up VR games at all? [9]

[Repeating Chorus Lines] [Everyone Sing]
Play some games, [4]

Roy leaks after I write about the Deckard not coming out this Christmas.

Sing-a-long version is out (with the original song as backing) thanks to J's hard work in producing a karaoke subtitle file (which will feature in the final video):

Lyrics have been slightly updated, marked by the asterisk:
It’s Christmas time [4]
There’s no need to be outside [7]
At Christmas time [4]
We let in love and stop throwing shade [9]

And in our games of plenty [7]
We can chuck a few grenades[7]
Throw your arms around the thread [7]
At Christmas time [4]

Write a reply [4]
To give out another (You) [7]
At Christmas time [4]
It’s hard, but when you’re shitposting [8]

There’s a world outside your instance [8]
And it’s a world furries appear [8]
*When the kids play on mobile they [8]
*Get groomed by bitter queers [6]

And the TDAs that dwell there [8]
Are adored by simps who coom [7]
Well, tonight thank God it’s them [7]
Instead of (You) [4]

And the Deckard won’t be out again this Christmas time [13]
The only headset dropped this year is VIVE’s [11]
(OOOOOOOHHHH)
Unique IPs don’t grow, [6]
Nor games nor demos flow [6]
[Everyone Sing] Do they boot up VR games at all? [9]
(OOOOOOOOHHHH)

(Here’s to (You))[3] Making mods to have our fun [7]
(Here’s to them)[3] Half Life 3 is nearly done[7]

It's not too bad. I used the wireless modmic and it gets the job done. After a year or so of heavy use I find the power button is a bit finicky and I'll rarely have minor charging issues but overall it worked decently as a substituent mic for a quest 3 for a decent amount of time. Quest 3 mic has gotten updates that make it more usable so I've been falling back on that more often as opposed to going to the effort of charging mine but there is a notable quality difference especially if you follow their EQ guide.

EU Assetto Corsa: European Racing club, season 12!
Race 85

19:00 UTC 20:00 CET, Monday 2nd of December 2024.

FUCKING TRUCKING. HELL YEAH. We're taking these FUCKING TRUCKS to america, to Laguna Seca. Drive these 5 tonn, 1000 HP shits around the corkscrew and don't screw around!

1 hour practice
12 minutes qualifiers
8 laps race

After that some relaxing convoy trucking in Scotland.

Assetto - can be played with wheel, controller, or steam-vr-wheel addon, it doesn't matter, we will all have fun driving together. If you just bought Asseto - grab Assetto Corsa Content Manager - a better launcher and mod manager: https://assettocorsa.club/content-manager.html To install mods: just drag and drop zip files from mega onto the Content Manager windows and click on the hamburger menu on top right. Highly recommend installing stable custom shader patch and 7-zip plugin in Content manager.

For communication we'll use mumble at voice.vrg.party port 64738, as it doesn't need any registrations or logins.
https://www.mumble.info/

I can't recomend enough Crew Chief
https://thecrewchief.org/
He's a helpfull AI fellow in the pits who'll provide you information about your car, your opponents, yell at you or try to encourage you. And most importantly, he will spot for you, in case you have a car in you blind spot.

UI radar are immersion breaking and basically cheating, but this guy will tell you verbally if someone is there on your right. Download, install, select Asseto Corsa in game list, press "Start application" and it should work!

They only could do it if they break SteamVR. Any vr headset in existance can use SteamVR, but there less and less reason to, as all games release on standalone first.

It's gonna be PC vs consoles now for a long time, with autistic/simulation games releasing on PC and requiring all the CPU and all other games releasing on Quest and then maybe on PC.

it's all valve's fault for leaving VR on it's own, and not actively promoting lighthouse and making partnerships.

oh no, i 100% know. they made a prototype index with HDR and loved it, its more likely but they will also need a way to convert non-HDR games to HDR and that always has a pretty big perf hit for desktop games, 10-20% fps loss.
And if its going to be HDR then it wont be pancakes, its just completely pointless to have HDR when you can only reach like 100nits past the pancake lenses.

if the compute puck does this in an async fashion to just handle streaming and image processing while the actual PC is crunching the real game and sending it to the unit we could have a feasible solution on our hands

i mean should one company be responsible for hand-holding others like HTC for every product they make?
Valve made and released their own hardware, devs just can't make new games worth a damn 90% of the time
Valve even released their own game to show them how its done and nobody can even plagiarize their work apparently
Tundra and Bigscreen made their devices without having their hands held like HTC
main issue is lack of killer apps besides vrchat to pull people in, and vrchat is for weirdos like us who already own VR

Pimax got it working in the end and they're Chinese bugmen

it's only htc now, and who knows if they even produce new ones, or just selling the existing stock.

Lighthouses themselves are now easy to make, as we know how they work, at least 1.0 - you could make one in the garage. But SteamVR HDK licence only allows you royalty free production and tools to make lighthouse tracked devices, not lighthouses themselves. And due to small market, custom components, asics, Lighthouse never achieved economies of scale, unlike camera based tracking, which uses off the shelf components.

Valve wanted lighthouse to be the USB of VR, everyone would make VR accessories to lighthouses which they'd make and kindly allow to bundle with 3rd party HMDs. But then we had production issues, delays, covid related shortages, Valve ghosting HMD devs who needed lighthouses, being overall quiet and hard to communicate, so nobody, ever made a 3rd party lighthouse controller and only a handfull of HMDs.

On other hand Microsoft - did create tonnes of partnerships, cooperated, helped their partners and WMR had like 7 manufacturers. But being Microsoft, they had to kill it like any other hardware project.

Imagine if Valve didn't sit on their ass, but used their know how and steam money to actually partner and propose collaborations and we had 7 manufacturers of lighthouse HMDs...

Now the screen is a software problem. Thus influences the design of these controllers. So few games used the cool inputs on the knuckles controllers. Think about how the valve devs where happy that the Slople Vision Pro, and how it "transformed" working in VR. No, sorry but you're just a dumbass.
The internet was a slow burn over the course of a few decades until it blew up in the mid/early 2000s. Before that, it was a niche thing that only enthusiasts and nerds really used (it was kino then btw)

Your expectations for VR are based on your zoomer expectations and you have no real appreciation for the development arc of emergent technologies. There is no three year track for VR blowing up and suddenly being mainstream. It's a long grind. It takes a lot of trial and error to get things right both in terms of ergonomics and UI. One of the biggest challenges facing VR is coming up with UI for games that'll make people really want to play them - flat game solutions don't work.
The other is iterating on the hardware until the usability is up and price is down.

These things take time.
Also, you really need to appreciate VRC more. It has done a great job getting people informed and interested in VR and it keeps VR on a good healthy broil while devs are figuring the obstacles keeping it from going mainstream out. VRC is a wonderful thing for VR because it gives enthusiasts something to do while waiting for the games to cook.

One decent early access release a year is OK in the grand scheme of things are VR is more for occasional short gaming sessions and chatting. Don't treat VR as you would a regular video game medium and you'll be fine. It's unrealistic to expect VR developers to make anything as high quality as Helldivers 2 or the Factorio DLC for VR in the same year as the market is so small.

because companies always take their security seriously, especially when they have the real identities of a lot of known vulnerable people, and they never ever decide to sell their data sets for a quick buck either. The VRC pipeline is very well documented and there are bad actors who would very much like to know who is in that pipeline.

If you use a Meta headset and Windows 10+ you don't have any privacy anyways. Whatever it takes to keep groomers out of instances is a healthy change. Consider playing some VR games instead. Just finished the campaign of pic related, it was fun and there's New Game+ with higher difficulty and building your ideal trooper loadout is fun but it definitely needs few more patches surprisingly devs are slowly patching it instead of leaving it to rot but you can see the exact moment they ran out of money at the campaign end.

As someone who still plays CVR most weeks, I don't think they can. Youtubedl doesn't even work anymore and I don't think that they've fixed it. I wanted to put in some youtube videos for a friend and had to resort to reencoding them and putting them on my server to get them to show up. It's not like the game which is run by a German company is much better, especially as you can't host your own servers. ie https://apollo-news.net/eu-behoerde-fordert-echtzeitueberwachung-von-handys-und-laptops-ab-2025/

It's something they can point to when people complain about kids being places they shouldn't and another step towards taking 18+ instances out of the grey area they still exist in.
I can't see them ever making it mandatory since it'd hurt their user numbers, but I think moderation is going to start going after instances that aren't tagged correctly when this rolls out.

I ask that you please sing the parts marked [Everybody Sings]. If you could also sing at least one verse that'd be mega. Those that are feeling extra melodious can try their hand at submitting the whole song.
You can also chose to submit your own mp3 voice recording with a different mic, link up with a recorder for the video portion, then send the sound clip their way. No need for this it can all be done in game to keep things simple.
Always looking for more volunteers, if you can work OBS and think a particular group/timezone isn't covered by our crew please step forward.

The Hitman they're working on, I think, is the fourth iteration. The fourth VR Hitman. They did PSVR-1, and then PCVR, then Quest, And now they're getting money for this port. If it is as good as Resident Evil 4 remake's adaptation it'll be a good year for the headset. But I'm not holding out hope

their facial scanning and gasket manufacturing process is definitely high variance, and it affects sweet spot about as much as the lens does. I asked support for a "thinner" gasket and it definitely improved the picture. So worth rerolling a few times on that.

I've gone through 4 different gaskets, a brand new unit, and an IPD change.
The lenses were horrible on every unit, every face gasket, etc. Custom 3d printed gasket to get my eyeballs glued to the screen as close as possible was the best, but it fogs up quite fast as a result and at least 30% of the lenses are still an extremely blurred chromatic mess.

This seems like a step backwards and I don't get the reasoning.

Ok, you can play normal games with VR controllers out of the box. But all modern controllers are bluetooth now, you probably own one and just connnect it to the headset. Ok, well maybe switching from VR controllers for VR UI and a legacy gamepad is annoying. But we will have eye and hand tracking, so UI should be a breeze even when holding a gamepad.

2 larger buttons on the inside were better analogies to the thumb. Now we don't have that anymore. Unless we want to count pressing down on the stick, which doesn't work great. I was also hoping we would see shrinking controller design that allowed you to make a pinching gesture while holding a controller, which is what I really want instead of just pressing a thumb button + trigger.

A lot of flat ports like Vivecraft and UEVR games really do benefit from the extra buttons. Theoretically you can use the right controller in place of a mouse rather than the joystick for playing flat games in theater mode too. I'm not saying that it's good, but it's the grim future use case that Valve seems to be going for.

kinda wish that the button layout was similar to quest controller though, as it is you'll probably have to go and rebind shit through steam for every game released before the deckard?
valve are clever though, maybe they'll have a solution so that games recognize it by default or just use the down and up on the dpad in place of quest buttons

Ok well maybe they know what they are doing then. When you think of the roy controllers like the principle of the steam controller, except you're using motion controls instead of track pads, it makes sense. Also VR conversion mods have varying degrees of success and may need a standard allotment of buttons. And even with official VR ports I remember the shortage of buttons being a problem now. Take skyrim for example that had confusing remaps. Sure you could fix it by redesigning skyrim for VR in mind, but valve wants lazy ports to work better.
Anonymous No.503936748
>>503936580
Exactly. I'll probably use them for EMUVR as you can still use motion for moving things around and lightgun games, but having a full gamepad is also useful. I actually like the controls on the Steam Deck so I have faith that the sticks and buttons won't be cheap and fragile like the Index controller's.

I'm not a nerd so I don't know if this is possible. a lot of games might need some sort of companion config app that could reset/disable parts of a game's UI so it doesn't look fucked up like some UEVR games before config

That's mostly correct, anon. I have been told that the chest tracker is supposed to be close to your collar bone. A good way to do that is by using a camera chest mount harness there are many cheap ones on sale online. A dedicated 'VR' one is the same thing for 10x the price. Keep each tracker above the relevant joints but try to make sure they are not sitting atop a large muscle that will move them around as you flex.

>>503928679
This is the critical part. People already complain all the time about friends being on orange. If normies can't join the few friends that are green, blue, or sent an invite; they will either quit or verify. Organisers will like the 'Age Verified' option to filter out the low effort nuisances that plague the game. Think ban evaders, afk players, anyone who cant be bothered to verify. All those people will join the next largest instance instead, causing its ratio of unfunny rejects to go up. Verification may never be literally mandatory, but if you don't verify, you'll be stuck in the mumble rapper instances full of kids and crashers.

>>503977998
Nothing. VRC could point to the verified status and say it wasn't their fault. These changes are probably primarily for liability reasons.

i guess quest 3 is the best overall option, but is it worth it over the 3S if i don't mind a smaller res?
how important is the size? can i just get away with the 128gb version?
if my pc can easily run alyx on max settings with the noVR mod, is that like a guarantee it'll play fine in VR, even if i have to tweak some of the settings?
how easy is it to run pirated games on VR headsets? is that like an issue?

I got a quest pro and I'm not sure how to calibrate the depth slider. Everything looks the same to me no matter where I slide it so I'm just keeping it in the middle for now.

These are not stupid questions anon.
The 3S is a fine entry level headset. Keep in mind though to play PCVR games with quest headsets (and other standalones) it is recommended to have a good wifi router (6E ideally) as how it works when you play PCVR is it encodes the video and decodes it on the headset, and wifi is unironically faster than the USB implementations on the headset (this is mostly a software issue).
As for size, you can get away with 128GB, especially for PCVR since nothing is really installed on the headset itself. For standalones it's enough space to install any game but you might have to swap games on and off if you want multiple MASSIVE games installed at once (this is not practically a problem)
Alyx runs well on most PCS, but keep in mind that VR vs desktop is roughly 4 times more demanding on PC hardware. Post specs.
Pirated games run fine, for both PCVR and standalones; except that lots of games worth playing are multiplayer and... would need to be bought anyway.

The difference is in the lens technology. With the 3S you're gonna end up with the same one from the last 7 years while the 3 has the new type that's only been out for like a year or two and which is simply a straight upgrade. The resolution difference isn't that drastic.
Headset internal storage doesn't matter, it's only to load up native games.
If you want to see what vr performance would be like for your games, make a custom resolution of 5000x2500 or 6000x3000 and then see if you can hit 72fps stable minimum.
Pirated games are extremely easy to get on the quest, see https://vrpirates.wiki/

Q3 has vastly better lenses and IPD adjustement (critical for clarity) than Q3s, its not just the resolution.

If you want a cheaper pcvr headset look into Pico 4 (chinese Quest 3, arguably more comfortable, similar lens/screen quality, also has cheap hassle free full body trackers, but has a smaller standalone game library), or PSVR2 with PC adapter - great screens, ok lenses, display port connection for high quality video stream without compression.

If you don't play standalone games memory doesn't matter, but you will want a good wifi 6 router/acces point in your VR room connected to your PC through ethernet.

Alyx is a super optimized game, post CPU/GPU/RAM.

Pirated games just work as any other games, steamvr is just an api to send images from game to headset and give input from controller to game, it doesnt care what game it is. You can even use it without steam installed. Quest piracy is also piss easy.

I just upgraded from the original vive to the quest 3. I haven't tried the 3S, but I think the most important difference between the 3S and the 3 is the type of lenses. 3S uses fresnel lenses just like my old vive, and the 3 uses pancake lenses. In my opinion, the increased resolution and especially the better lenses makes the 3 worth it over the 3s. I don't think you need more than 128GB. Most standalone games are like 5-15 gigs. I was able to play Alyx on my vive without problems on my old GTX1080, but not maxed out. If you're talking about pirated PCVR I don't see how it would be any different from a flat game. Don't know about sideloading standalone games.

There's three types you can join in tough
1) card
2) digital item
3) physical item

If you just chose card (1) on the form you submit just literally a texture with 0 blender knowledge.

>4gb vram

Ouch. Ouchie ouch. You will have to run your vr games at 1000x1000 resolution per eye with textures set to very low. Its gonna be a blurry experience unless you upgrade your video card to have at least 12 gigs. Even old 1080 would be better.

All great games.
