with higher volume you can just turn down the world audio in your quick menu settings if it happens to be too loud by default (this is literally almost never ever the case for 99% of maps with video players, they're always set up WAY too quiet)

if its too low you need to hunt down the video player in the world to make it an acceptable volume, which means each person needs to hunt it down too if they want to actually hear anything coming from the video player

I like strategy games and autism sims but with the exception of the dead god-game genre I've yet to see the potential for longform singleplayer strategy in VR. The few VR strategy games we have are short and with little depth beyond some novelty to the controls.
Menu heavy games are better off on a flat screen than in VR most of the time. Social focused board games in VR still have a lot of potential and I can imagine a genre unique to VR could branching off of it.

VRC devs need to update their guidelines for performance, people have better hardware than they did 10 years ago. Telling someone they only have 4 mats to work with and less tris than the average booth model is retarded when those models perform fine and the extra mats don't mean shit until you get into the dozens.

I switched from i9-13900k to a new mobo and 9800X3D.
When it's working it's far superior but this PC crashes and is much more unstable. I've tried everything I can think of. I've ordered new ram, since supposedly my mobo doesn't like the sticks I have.

In most games I have a good performance increase but in other instances I crash after 5 mins or so and it's to the point where it might be an overlooked setting or something?

Usually using virtual desktop and VDXR. Unreal engine games all seem to work fine? I got all set up with my hotas for P:Wingman last night and now that game is crashing as well after 10 minutes or so, when it was fine previously.

Is it possible that all of my issues are from Win11 IOTC? My previous pc was regular Win11. Enterprise is so much better I really hope that isn't part of the issue.

The 5090 is insane for high res VR. Even in things I didn't directly compare the kind of performance possible on settings is just stupid. It's refreshing to see after the 5090's jump for flatscreen kind of sucked and high res headsets suddenly feel viable. I expected extra gains, but I was thinking maybe it'd be +50% at most. Can't tell you exactly why that happened, but if I had to guess could've either been a brief hiccup with wireless or the fact the 5090 might've been so asleep at the wheel it may've had a small hitch going from a lower to higher powered state when something suddenly demanding came up.

No in the hell it's not, how sensitive to motion sickness are you? Do you not understand the point of a benchmark or how memory bandwidth works? If it can have a certain level of performance, even if below the headset's hz rate, then seeing how close it gets to it at such settings is still a useful tool cause you can get an idea of how much you might need to make adjustments, alongside the gap in performance between cards.

Secondly, in this specific case as the memory bandwidth itself is what becomes the limitation, that wouldn't be reflected in the frame times if just one lower resolution and being hz limited was looked at since when going up to a massively higher resolution it's like when a card hits a VRAM bottleneck in that performance craters once it's bandwidth starved, but you wouldn't know exactly when that's going to happen without actually going up to said resolution to make the bottleneck happen, which in turn comes with then being below your hz rate here. Yeah, you could tell off frametimes as well once you actually get up there, but so could FPS if your frame pacing is reasonably consistent. Which it was. So in that case the FPS was a fine abstraction.

All the extra bandwidth on the 5090 doesn't make much an impact if, hypothetically, the amount of information the card needs to access fits within the 4090 and 5090's bandwidth, then it's more the card's compute power being measured and that's why the gains on flatscreen kind of suck, which is the kind of gains that'd be seen if testing on a very hz limited scenario. The 5090's a very unique card for VR with the absurd bandwidth over everything else.

It's not growing because the required hardware in and out of the case for pcvr is ass-bullshit expensive even if you cheap out and get an old used zuckbot headset. Outside of the first world that's money people just don't see, and steam has a great many more users outside of the first world than in it.
Does this mean it can't grow? No, but many other things have to change for growth to happen, things that probably won't change in the near term, making a 'killer app' that justifies the price tag even less likely as developers see no reason to cater to the pcvr platform.

The most interesting view on it was one person who asked if low end VR headsets, ie quest 3s or a used older headset, could be a viable alternative to a computer display, to which the answer is a disappointing "kinda but it's not completely there yet and not as comfortable as you are hoping". I think if the hardware and software could reach that point, PCVR could see much greater adoption.

That's what we got with the apple headset, pretty much. A viable alternative to a computer display. SteamVR's native display rendering is great but VR hunt and peck keyboards are and will always be unwieldy and slow, ruining non-passive activities unless you're seated in front of a keyboard... At which point you'd be better off with just the monitors most of the time.

Could I connect a bluetooth keyboard and use it like a laptop for basic tasks like web browsing, writing emails, shopping, whatever? Yes. It handles Bluetooth accessories just fine outside of a few quirks like intercepting the Alt Tab instead passing it through, and W11 even recently added the ability to essentially scan a QR code with your Quest and use it as a virtual desktop natively in conjunction with a Meta firmware update. It lacks built in programs like Word, but I'd imagine you could use browser based solutions that Google and Microsoft have been pushing if you needed to use it standalone as well.

If I was traveling, a headset that can support basic tasks with a keyboard, and also play games, would be a real upgrade to a cheap laptop that can't do the latter. Quest standalone is great for traveling since you can easily play stuff in the hotel room. It's also not bad for watching movies on the plane if you don't mind looking retarded and bring some headphones. Never had an issue bringing my electronics on a flight, and the new scanners don't even require you to remove it from your bag anymore.
