Slopped up a program to control vrchat movement with just your head, no controller joysticks. Which is useful in the rather specific case where you want to put your hands on the handlebars of a stationary bike and ride around without also having to awkwardly keep the controllers in your palms. It also compensates for vrchat's head-oriented movement so you can look around without changing your vector.

Turning when you actually want to is a bit awkward, but it's pretty nice otherwise. FBT is also not required; it's just holding the joystick forward essentially. I think with a bit more effort to record trackers you could adjust the forward magnitude based on how much you're pedaling. I'll try that later, but desu I'm usually too lazy to put on trackers anyway.

I did try before with the cycling group/map that occasionally gets posted here which uses some nip bike world prefab, but the exact problem of having to hold grip on the virtual handlebars to steer while also gripping the irl handbars never felt good enough to be worth it. Plus you're limited to whatever maps have the prefab.

Now that this works though, I'm more motivated to try some more cycling.

Thought up a much better idea for turning. Instead of staring at gaze targets, you can lean left/right by about 30cm, which feels (somewhat) natural while sitting on a bike, and is also analog instead of on/off. Longer less bitcrushed video at https://streamable.com/urg3au

Not pictured here but I also made the forward/stop triggers gradual instead of immediate, so you can also adjust your speed somewhat. It's not as natural as pedal control, but also doesn't require feet trackers. I made a hover board that worked sorta like that in vrc. though it did turning with the hip rather than the head. Thats just an emulated joystick/overlay right? I was thinking about making a similar control scheme to the hoverboard but for joystick control for something like vrc. Though the activation of the system would need to be figured out, don't want to have it on all the time. Thinking about having the player grab something near their hips and a hoverboard.png or somerthing appears in their hand then they can drop it on the ground and step onto it. Yes, it's a steamvr/openvr overlay and it uses https://docs.vrchat.com/docs/osc-as-input-controller to emulate vrchat inputs. Which was easier than figuring out how to emulate inputs at the openvr layer, but there's no reason it couldn't work like that.

I was pleasantly surprised how simple it is to get overlays to work with just python. Way less hassle than setting up a whole unity project or whatever. Could definitely make a hoverboard version pretty quickly. For toggling on and off, I stole the "look straight down for a few seconds" technique that LIV uses, works pretty well while being hard to trigger accidentally.

Vive 3.0 trackers but base stations are also needed. I hear slimes are decent. Fluxpose looks good too but that's about a year wait away.

The steam frame ain't coming soon. If you want to get into VR with full body tracking (legs and hips) the current meta is still HTC trackers and 2.0 lighthouses. Honestly I'd tentatively recommend a used index kit since it will be the cheapest way into that tech while also getting a headset out. Then in a year or two when the frame comes out you can upgrade.
There are flux pose trackers coming that will probably make lighthouses obsolete but they won't be available for another year.

If money are not a question then vive trackers and lighthouse tracked headset like big screen beyound 2 or something. If you want something cheap and just works and are located not in USA then Pico 4 Ultra and 2/3/5 pico trackers (any amount of trackers gives you FBT but more trackers improve accuracy).

Good but annoying solution (requires running calibration app every time you launch vr) Pico 4/Quest 3 + 2 lighthouses and Vive trackers.
Cheap but annoying but mostly works with constant need of recalibration: Pico4/Quest 3 + slime/haritora/mocopi trackers. These are 3DoF IMU trackers which drift constantly, but do work.

Vive ultimate trackers have good tracking can be used with any headset and don't require lighthouses but require quite big and well lit tracking spaces, software is half baked, so it is an option but its not recomended.

If you are ready to wait a year Fluxpose magnetic field trackers seem to be very promising.

If you want to dance, honestly there's nothing better than vive 3.0 trackers as of now; maybe fluxpose once it releases.
Everything else is painful: pico trackers are fine for non dancers but not when you need accurate movements, slime and similar have the same issue while needing more calibration, vive ultimate trackers are not ok because they can't be too close to uniform surfaces (which means not too close to walls or can't look at ground), avoid tundras because they overheat + jitter + occlude themselves.
Steam frame might not even release this year, you'd be perfectly happy with a pico 4 or a quest 3 + a router; there's little to no benefits the steam frame will bring compared to those 2.

It depends a lot more on your setup than the headset: what router are you using (Wifi 5? 6? 6E? 7?)? are there a lot of interferences from other people in your building? how far is the headset from the router? ...
Difference between quest 3 and quest 2 is the processor (allowing for faster decode and AV1), and compatibility with wifi 6E (so if you use a wifi 6E router, less chances that other people in your building would interfere with their own devices).
Steam frame will in theory work better with wireless due to foveated encoding, but we don't know if/when the headset release or at what price. For VRChat it most likely won't do a difference, for ms flight it would be a big difference however if it works (game is much more detailed and prone to compression artifacts).

Understandable for doing things alone, still hope you'll share your recordings here at least tho.
Something you can consider also, is to get a wired headset for stuff like RE or MSFlight and eventually do your recordings without a headset. Depends on what you prioritize the most

Yes. Your base skin is the same for the entire match but you can take over the 'NPCs' to get their skin or move them somewhere.

I played all the games in the godot https://itch.io/jam/godot-xr-game-jam-mar-2026/entries (well, the ones playable on PC). Actually some impressive ones in there (not just the funny anime grill game).

My favorite was https://fyoxy.itch.io/clone-it , which uses the same clones gimmick as the last clockwinder (and also We Are One but I haven't played that one), and there's actually ~20 minutes of gameplay across the 7 levels. Some of it is artificially hard due to tiny catching hitbox, but you can still finish and the climbing one is satisfying enough that it makes up for the throwing jank on the others. Worth a download IMO.

finally there's https://necrashter.itch.io/record-saber which is a fork of an earlier godot beat saber clone, but you can record random swings to the music as a freeform beatmap. Not really in the spirit of the jam (since most of the beatsaber clone isn't their work), but I actually really like the idea as a utility. I want a full beatmapper in VR where you can quickly edit/play parts of maps. They also open sourced their work so I think I will try to contribute stuff on top of it.

I used https://github.com/DragoonAethis/itch-dl to download everything which helped, but every time I do a jam I'm reminded by how much nicer it is loading random maps in vrchat is compared to dudetrustme.exe's from itch, which among other thing is definitely a reason for vrchat's success, even despite the extreme pain that is udon development. I think it wouldn't take much to reduce the friction to something vrchat equivalent, but nobody's done it properly yet.

Again only ~5 minutes of basic puzzles so it's hard to recommend actually downloading, but maybe inspiring if you're thinking "can you build an actual VR game in this meme game engine?". The answer is yes. Similarly https://surrebraldesigns.itch.io/neurocorp-training-demo is a 1-puzzle demo of a definitely viable game mechanic, which sadly has an overly long voice over to get to the point. But again if you think "I want to build a whole game like that!", maybe you'll be inspired by how far one dev can get in a week.

Also https://kominaaa.itch.io/adriatica which is just flying, but comfy atmosphere done well with minimal assets. Very "this could've been a vrchat map"-core, but it'd be a good vrchat map.

IMO all the pieces are pretty much there now thanks to the vsekai devs which despite not having any fully worked thing to show (AFAIK, it's hard to tell from their sprawl of repositories), they have built up almost all the of parts as engine/library contributions over the years. Working IK/finger tracking, mirrors, anime grills. And https://github.com/goatchurchprime/two-voip-godot-4 has voice chat (opus packets over godot's built-in networking). Main parts that I think are currently missing are viseme animation/lipsync, and some way of scripting that's sandboxed enough to want to trust downloading from strangers.

But yeah, it's all pretty much there, waiting to be turned into a full package just like how ron slapped together a bunch of shit in ~2016 to make vrchat. I am also inspired to try putting more of the pieces together, we'll see how it goes.

One thing that vrchat is definitely stuck with is its shit networking latency (why all the vrchat-based PVP shooters suck, and even like the volleyball is IMO a big "I've never played another vr game" cope). So one angle is "do exactly what vrchat does but with low ping latency compensated networking". And of course udon in general is in a very hard place to dig out of. But "vrchat with better networking" is an angle that's different than e.g. resonite's "build everything in game" gimmick, or like cluster's "vrchat for jp streamers". I think better networking is what https://github.com/BasisVR/Basis is roughly trying, though from what I understand they're going for "massive social events" rather than like tight PVP.
