use a ray cast to aim the spell, to "fire" the spell: world constrain an object at the source (wand) and the destination (raycast hit), turn on the appropriate spell contact sender, lerp the contact between source and destination, turn off the contact, and return everything back to its resting location

It's supposed to be fairly lenient actually, but it's hard to tell what's going on currently. I think I need to have the recorded poses play back in mirror mode so I can see how much position error I'm actually getting.

Unfortunately I couldn't figure out how to make it so you can stand on the rocks. You can make the rigidbody collide with PlayerLocal, but the player capsule is kinematic so it just pushes the rock around, and if you jump on it, the rock glitches away. I also tried parent constraining a different collider to the rigidbody, but for some reason that collider just glitches out too, I think since it self-collides with its mirror clone or some shit. I also tried making a standalone collider (without any rigidbodies) that's frozen to the world, and it stays still, but if you try to jump on it, it somehow just flings you away at incredible hihg speed, like the danger cheese.

If anybody knows how to get colliders you can stand on that are spawned from an avatar, lmk. And yes I do know about all the VRLabs prefabs (I'm using https://github.com/VRLabs/World-Physics for the rock), but couldn't find anything relevant.

It's a lot more brutal with ammo and supplies. It's not particularly balanced so to beat the game you have to be constantly moving forwards like a shark since if you fall behind you end up running out of money or doing terribly low profit grinding.
There's a few ways to save money though, ranging from intended, intended but busted, to busted.
Firstly, use throwing knives. You find a lot of knives and they save ammo on the slow lower tier enemies.
Secondly the SKS has a bayonet. Carrying around a cleaning rod and some tissue and you get completely free damage on basically all melee enemies. It's overpowered.
Thirdly, and this is the exploit I know of; Missions where you kill monsters for cores respawn the monsters when you save/load. So you can take one of those missions, go to the place they spawn, kill them, steal the cores, then save/reload right then and there and they respawn and let you kill them again. It's tedious.
I don't recommend any but the knife one unless you're really struggling.

The thing about 1.0 is the chest-crates are randomized but don't respawn, there's only a trivial amount of actual respawning loot in the form of minor bullets and clutter around the corpses in the zone. Almost all the money you earn and ammo you buy comes from selling artifacts and cores.The zone is much bigger, a single huge map and if you leave all the enemies and artifacts respawn and all the anomaly fields shuffle so they have to be remapped. Any edge of the map will return to the hub, but not all the edges are easy to reach.

You have to plan your trips because if you turn back or die everything will respawn and you'll lose all progress clearing. On ironman you won't even be able to save while in there and if you die because you overextended into a dangerous or unfamiliar new area you'll drop all your stuff and have to attempt to re-clear through all the enemies to recover your favorite gun or whatever. Lots of pressure. The upside is you can also leave items in the zone and they'll never be wiped, so it's possible to prepare a basecamp stocked with ammo and recovery items deeper in the zone for extended trips.

I kind of prefer the 1,0 gameplay loop but I understand why it was changed. The big map also ran like shit.

The distances in 2.0 with the final zone feel like kind of a mixture; you're in there so long just because of the scale that it might as well reset when you leave because I found I was starting to do 2-3 day trips, and anything over half the tide interval you might as well wait, unless you want to shelter through a tide and have to fight your way back to base camp with dwindling supplies.
But that makes leaving supplies in a shelter kind of useful; spare set of kit for recovery for example.

Its hard to remember to be honest since if you play the first alpha properly you're not getting shot at much. Getting the drop on enemies, using suppressors, and avoiding combat is so important getting damaged is the exception rather than the rule. Raycasts do nothing. They dont hit people, only worlds. Particles can be simulated in worlds space and have different physical effects applied, and can generate hit events, but then you dont have a way to identify which type of effect it was, and only maps could do something about it.

Contacts allow avatars and maps to send each other collision information with tags. Raycasts allow to move gameobjects towards colliders. This combination opens up cool possibilies (for porn) and gameplay mehanics (for porn)

Linuxfriend here in need of help. Video players in VRC were working for me a few weeks ago but now fail to load videos. Proton GE and GE-RTSP cause VRC to hang on "Joining..." when first loading in and then crash. Forcing proton version to 10.0-4 causes VRC to fail to launch at all. How to use the staff:
Download the staff.
Open the package.
Drag and drop MagicStaff.prefab onto your avatar.
Click on the staff in scene at the highest level and find MA Bone Proxy.
Drag the hand you want to carry the staff from the armature into the target for the bone proxy (either left or right hand).
Move the staff in scene so that it's in the right place and height in your hand.
Upload avatar.
Test in the test world.

40 people will join the wizard instance
20 of them will not have any wizard/magic related outfit/props and just be there to yap/drink
and 10 of the remaining 20 will not have the magic system on their avatar, just a low effort wizard hat

I can't get the actual spell to fire. The contacts all work for selecting a spell and firing it, and the sound plays, but the spell effect and contact don't appear. Or they might be appearing, but squinting at the animator debug view the `alahomora_fire` state is only active for like 1 frame. I think the ray speed calculator is somehow broken, but it's extremely hard to tell what's going on in there.

If you specifically want emissive screens where the colors of the screen accurately light the world, it's the best performing way to do that (more so than old unity realtime GI). It's not cheap though, about equivalent to having a realtime light without shadows.

However, if you just want lights that aren't screens, you should generally use https://github.com/REDSIM/VRCLightVolumes instead. It's simpler and thus performs better. VRCLightVolumes will also do emissive screens, with the caveat that they'll only glow a single color (picked somewhat arbitrarily from a pixel in the middle of the screen). Which of course might still be fine for whatever you're doing. But that's the difference.

the "single color" screen emission in vrclightvolumes is okay if the screen is just incidental in a world, but it looks pretty bad when like the entire video is dark except for the one pixel that reads for its light (the pixel seems to be somewhere in the middle of the screen). So if you're doing a theater I'd still use LTCGI, but otherwise nobody will care.

Unity GI/enlighten actually works pretty well for screen emissions. I'd actually recommend it more except it's almost completely abandoned by the lightmap baking system these days. You have to go back to CPU lightmapping to even generate its data I think. But worlds like Cinema 1336 still use it and it just werks.

The raycast works fine, it's just the speed calculation. I couldn't figure it out, but yes the system otherwise works when the spells play back at constant speed.

I got the OSC grimoire voice system working with the staff otherwise. It can now send pretty arbitrary OSC parameters and pauses so if you edit the OSC signal to

magic_selected$c0a1637a6d71=1, (Pause 300ms), launch_magic$c0a1637a6d71=true

It'll activate the same parameters and the contacts. For magic_selected, 1 is flipendo, 2 is alohomora, 3 is spongify, 4 is rictusempra . And the funny string after that is MA parameter renaming; It seems to be pretty stable on my own avatar, but I dunno what it hashes for that. You can look at your own avatar's config file https://docs.vrchat.com/docs/osc-avatar-parameters , or uncheck the 'auto rename' thing in MA Parameters if you want to do this yourself.
