The Frame's hardware is disappointing, but I'm surprised at how undercooked the software is. Even flat games can crash or have issues. I feel like the time table for the Frame getting fixed is similar to the time table of it coming out in the first place.

Back in the CRT days, having my monitor output 1280x1024 @ 60Hz was unbearable for me, 1152x864@75hz was uncomfortable but okay for like 20 minute gaming sessions, 1024x768@85Hz is the highest resolution I could use for hours without getting headaches even though I could still perceive flicker in my peripheral vision, 800x600@100Hz is what I often fell back to when I had to use some shitty program where you couldn't set the background color to anything other than white.

my quest does that with steam link. They actually improved it with a patch though and I can raise my bitrate higher before it happens. It might just be a typical problem with low performance rather than specific to the frame. Users are reporting the stream looks like crap and hitches when the dongle is 3 feet away. Anything is possible when steam link is using your shitty wifi connection instead of the dongle because valve didn't let you specify which one.

Paper tracker has a solution but they immediately sold out apparently.
Babble also has their solution up for sale on their website still for $100.
I brought up the eyetracking being built in before because that's the hard part when it comes to modding stuff into the headset.
You kind of subject yourself to actual risk/harm by going with third party solutions for eyetracking especially since a lot of the parts are just bought off shady aliexpress stores.
You do not have to worry about that with Valve/Meta eyetracking since we actually have regulations here in the western world to make sure megacorpos are shipping safe products and not things that will cause customers to go blind.
Facetracking is the easy part and it's why you already had Paper tracker and Babble giving a solution basically on launch day.

My base test for facetracking is if it can properly detect me smiling with my teeth shown.
QPro passed this test with ease but Pico 4 Pro I had to do some insane im-da-joker-baby type of unnatural smiling just to get it to recognize a smile.

Get two 10,000mah power banks that can do 45W charging. You can go higher than 10,000mah but you're trading off in terms of weight of the battery and the amount of time it will need to recharge.
I think two 10,000mah batteries that are the lightest weight possible is the way to go. You either stick it in your pocket or you clasp it onto your pants or belt or w/e and hotswap them.

This is what I got two of, it seems to be the best bang for the buck while also being the lightest feeling so its not weighing down your pocket/belt clip.
You just switch the two batteries whenever one gets low and you basically get infinite battery life. $30 for each battery so about $60 + tax in total.

One of the most difficult concepts to explain to a non-VR user is 6 dof tracking. They seem to always think the headset just directly outputs the monitor's image into your field of view, the headset tracking is 2D polar coordinates like using a mouse, and the controllers are just pointing devices like the Wii. I think it's because they've become so used to 2dof flat games being "3D", that the concept of an actual 3D space instead of a spherical canvas around the camera is too far a leap. Even after looking at videos of VR gameplay in 2016 myself, I somehow didn't quite understand what was happening before actually owning a headset.

An Index 2 with various minor issues fixed and updates around 3-4 years ago would have been ideal. I think they delayed it because the Quest was successfully wireless and standalone so they wanted that, AVP probably delayed it again so it had to be a spatial computer as well. It's not motion sickness, it's your brain thinking you're poisoned because what your eyes are seeing doesn't match up with your inner ear so you clearly are about to die and are hallucinating. The trick is to not push through when you start feeling sick, but instead take the headset off, take a 5 minute break, and then come back to it once you're feeling better. As you do this, you'll break your brain into being able to dissociate the visual stimulus from what your inner ear is reporting, and eventually not have any issues. If you keep trying to power through, you can instead condition yourself to start feeling ill whenever you put on VR and never be able to get over it like that one fucking retard at Valve who fucked over VR development for years.

you should, I've thought the same. Some parts are way more sloppable now (openxr driver, firmware, tracking system, even CAD work for 3d printing). The actual displays and optics are not though. You can maybe simulate the lenses but somebody still has to fabricate them. My light (slop)research says the little micro displays in a quest or bsb or frame are about $300 each raw, or you can get a pair of displays with mated optics for $900. but then you still have to draw the rest of the owl. You can of course use the displays/lenses in an existing headeset and slop the software/firmware or 3d print comfort mods, i.e. literally what people are doing already. But I think the lenses/optics are still a sticking point on doing something completely custom (or you have to severely compromise on resolution/aberration/weight/etc from commercial).

To their credit, the CTRL-labs EMG band they had back in 2019 definitely wasn't "almost 100% complete". I'm sure it had significant issues with generalizability or training or even basic shit like battery life or fragility that I believe would have taken 7 years of progress (not just on its own tech but in batteries/software) to get out. But yes it would've been nicer if faceberg released dev kits, or instead of buying the company outright, just fund it so they can release janky dev kits own their own for people to play with.

FWIW you have always been able to buy janky EMG devkits from other companies over the last 7 years anyway. While being attached to the faceberg glasses certainly hasn't helped, I would've expected more 'look at cool things you can do with EMG wristband" demos to show up by now if the tech actually worked. Maybe it's just not accurate or reliable enough.

already experimenting with frame controller mods. The trigger is fuked up imo. really hard to get those sweet sweet double or tripple taps in VRFPS. So I designed a hardstop and double side taped it to the trigger. Makes it feel like a quest trigger now, still not the best, the placement is all funny but feels better at least. I tried taping the grip bumper over(not like in pic rel) so that I could make the grip use the cap sensors instead to make it feel closer to an index. I was able to get that to work at the cost of finger tracking. The grip bumper is used when auto calibrating the cap sensor(full grab then full release). The tape blocks any cap sensor calibration from happening. Maybe ill try that if i can get access to the firmware...
