With 5 materials and one skinned mesh renderer, even with 30 people in the room you'll only be pushing 150 draw calls for the avatars, which is fine. Past that point IK, voice traffic, and other CPU hogs start to eat up more time than draw calls, so diminishing returns kinda deal.

Dynamic Bones are evil, btw. It runs on the CPU and it is a hierarchically-bound calculation, which means that the more long chains of bones you have, the worse it gets (skirts are a horrible offender). Having colliders basically doubles/triples the evil-ness, because then the script has to check EVERY FRAME to ensure that EVERY BONE isn't inside the radius of a collider. They look good but having more than like 20 is heresy. I usually have two versions of my avatar-- one with all my DynBones, and one with the scripts disabled for busy rooms. Even then, I only have like.. 15, maybe?

Why yes. I use a 3d mesh as a particle myself. The trick is that you can only assign a "mesh" as a particle if it's a single mesh.
I mean, no doubles. If you highlight a vertex and press Ctrl+L in blender it should highlight the whole thing.

The metal spikes are a lot more terrifying going close to you if they actually reflect metal shinyness and have 3d-ness to them.

Feel free to make a torpedo of dildoes as long as they're a single mesh!
