All the material combiner does is stitch the original square material textures together, downscale the entire image to fit a power of 2, and resize the UVs to match. Sort of a meta-atlas at the UVMap level instead of the island level.

As such, you can always make a smaller atlas manually by packing more efficiently. And more importantly, you can resize important parts (eyes, face, hair) to be larger/more detailed than unimportant parts (clothes, shoes, 1 color textures).

Depending on your model's texture detail, how good you are at manual atlassing, and how many fucks you give in general, it may still be worth it for you to atlas manually over the combiner.

I don't know if the material combiner has a setting for it, but when manually atlassing you can avoid the artifacts at the seam in the center of your face by increasing the bake margin to 24px or more. There's no need to unwrap that seam and take up twice the space for your face. unless of course you want to make non-symmetric edits to your face texture later.

To be honest, talking in VR helps with that. Your accent is entirely shaped by your input. The reason Americans don't have a reinforced accent is because a majority of us circulate in locations where no accent dominates.

The exceptions are regional: Texas where you have to drive an hour to see another person, New York where culture and density reinforce the stereotypical accent, and the midwest, where our lifestyle enforces small, incestuous conversational groups which maintain small peculiarities.

To be honest, if you're audible, I like hearing the different accents: It reinforces the Stephenson aesthetic when I'm reminded that distance is meaningless in VR.

Probably not, but it doesn't hurt to try. If you just want it to be invisible with a switch you can toggle off the mesh renderer at runtime.

For science, I tried this out today. See webm related for results. Thoughts:

- It does work. However, I was getting a buttery smooth 45-75fps in a room with a mirror by myself though, so it's not exactly optimized. It probably depends on your skirt mesh however. Mine has fucking 4550 tris in it, so clearly not the best skirt mesh ever.
- The constraints work to pin the top of the skirt to your hips, but I haven't out how to make the cloth stiff/starchy enough for skirt aesthetics. It looks too droopy and flowy for my tastes, especially compared to the default poofiness of the skirt and pleats. I'll post the values and constraints I used in another post. I'm not sure if it's my unity project scale or what, but all the values that actually had an effect were extremely small. 0.0001 to 0.001 max.
- Not clipping against your legs is pretty nice, with just a 3 colilders in legs/hip. Could put colliders in your hands too, if you were into that sort of thing.
- You can turn on random wind/lateral forces for a blowing wind effect, might be kind of nice.
- If you don't have FBT, it's probably not worth it at all, since you can't even move your hips or legs freely. I'd just weight paint in that case. And even with FBT, you're never using this in an instance with more than like 3 people in it, so

Various settings. The colliders are straightforward, same as the dynamic bones stuff but using unity components instead. The constraint weight painting tool for unity cloth is cancer though, another reason to not use so many vertices in the mesh you're trying to clothify. The settings of cloth component itself I just guessed at. Bending/Stretching stiffness don't seem to do much. I didn't know you guys visited there later, I looked at that world with a few of you a while ago.
The pool was also really cool and a worldbuilder-anon said they believe it's using the cloth material settings mentioned earlier in the thread. It collides with the beachballs but not with players, allowing the beachballs to float and create ripples while hitting it.
Really cool world overall, definitely not optimized for holding a large group, but cool.
Also I was thinking VR shadowpuppets could be cool but obviously dynamic lighting in any world isn't set up to that level of detail. There's only so much you can do with hand positions but you can combine and be creative with it.
