At HTC’s Vive event the company announced the ‘Shadow VR’ standalone headset from Chinese company ‘Shadow Creator’.

The Shadow VR headset should become the first standalone consumer VR headset with 6DoF controllers, beating Oculus Quest to market by over six months. It runs the mobile version of HTC’s Viveport VR app store, and launches “worldwide” Nov. 11 for $399.

The headset uses a 1440p (2560×1440) display, the same resolution as the Oculus Go and Lenovo Mirage Solo. The lenses are fresnels with a claimed field of view of 110°. The system on a chip (SoC) used is the same Snapdragon 835 used in the Vive Focus and Oculus Quest.

HTC tells us that Shadow VR is equipped with 6DoF controllers which Shadow Creator developed on its own. The controllers were, however, not shown (not even a render), and no details were given on the controller tracking system other than that it uses “ray tracing”, whatever is meant by that.

Is there a trick to modeling the eyes? It's probably to just import a basic TDA model and start messing around in unity to see what you like before going full custom. There are a lot of toon shader options out there, and it's easy to get instant feedback when dragging sliders around. In-game is always trickier with different lighting conditions, but you can also simulate those to a degree by setting up a scene in unity with some lights in it.

Inside-out tracking on WMR isn't bad because inside out tracking is inherently bad, it's bad because Microsoft. The Samsung is quite a bit improved because it's the only one that doesn't use the standard tracking kit that makes every other WMR set essentially the same headset in different casings. I also find the biggest barrier to the WMR sets is that nobody actually fucking knows they exist. The marketing on the things is abysmal. Ask anyone on the street or wherever, even if they've heard of VR and know about the Vive, if you tell them that fucking Dell makes a VR set they'll look at you like you're crazy. Regardless of the fact that I do have confidence in Valve to do inside out tracking properly, >>233868938 is right. They're binocular passthrough cameras at most, possibly useful for AR features if anyone gives a shit. Twin forward cameras are good for passthrough, SLAM for the headset itself, and not much else. For that matter, the headset tracking on the WMR is perfectly fine, it doesn't lose tracking unless you're playing in the dark, have completely blank walls or ceiling that have no points of reference for it to track, or obstruct the two cameras.
The controller tracking has a bit more jitter than Vive or Oculus, and obviously is limited to what the cameras can see - though the accelerometers in the controllers let you reach outside of that for a few seconds at a time.
I think it's a completely adequate VR experience, and is better than Vive in some important ways. I personally own both the Samsung WMR and Vive, and prefer the WMR.

With refinement, I think inside out tracking can be fine for consumer VR, assuming that's what Valve is going for. For hardcore enthusiasts, I still think that outside in tracking is better.

I think that they'll quickly achieve parity with one another, to be honest. Oculus has done some very impressive work with regards to SLAM tracking and so has Google. But inside out tracking doesn't have to mean SLAM and SLAMlikes. Valve can further simplify lighthouse tracking, and use it as a method of high framerate active room mapping for much more accurate mapping-based tracking. In addition, curing the problem of jitter in tracked controllers is primarily an IMU problem. Oculus has very, VERY good IMUs. The GearVR IMU is almost perfect, and even the Rift and Touch primarily operate on the IMU and use the sensors to provide corrections due to the higher latency. Inside out tracking for controllers, with sub-millimeter stability, is not out of the question even using SLAM or Insight/Constellation.

The only time I've ever had 'bad' tracking was my PSmoveservice setup, which is literally pure IMU plus one point of tracking per object. The ability to mount additional tracking bulbs on each object would improve repeatability to near parity with consumer products. Curiously, I never had to recenter my GearVR under this setup. It just fucking pointed correctly. That's a damn good IMU, or probably damn good magnetometers in particular. The controllers were repeatable enough for general use but aiming a gun in rec room involved a lot of twisting the sticks to get it right.

It'll never happen, but god I wish FromSoft would give VR another shot. Or at least make another game without combat. I enjoyed piecing together the story and characters. Didn't really expect to be so invested in what happens to the kids. From a gameplay design standpoint though there's clear room for improvement. Less object-hunting, more proper puzzles. Fewer loading screens. And a movement system that isn't occasionally awkward.

Comparing it to Astro Bot, another recent PSVR exclusive, I honestly wish this could've turned out as incredibly polished instead. A polished VR adventure game by FromSoft would be a dream come true for me.

Most likely, but as I said don't expect actual puzzles. Much of it is just exploring, though you do have an inventory and use items on things. I don't know how it compares to FromSoft's older adventure games; never played or seen footage of them. Either way, it's not as straightforward as it sounds, despite being way more linear of course than Dark Souls or Bloodborne. My biggest complaint are the loading screens. Here's why:

There's a built in limit of 20k inside the SDK, but most people generally bump that up to 64~65k.
The 2nd number is there because at that point Unity will automatically split models into multiple meshes which not only isn't exactly nice on the framerate but also can fuck with shapekeys.

Sometimes, you just can't decimate things enough to get under 20k without looking like shit.
It's a really dumb limit and shows how incompetent whoever put it there.
