Depends on the range. Point blank most things remove helmets but there's plenty that don't. Pistols I think all remove helmets at point blank but the p90 doesn't. I've stuck those things directly into my own face and pulled the trigger plenty of times. The MP5 doesn't remove helmets either.

Using the graphs is a nice way to get the tips to flick around or appear more weighty. Here's my thing for hair. Works best with a 3-4 bones long chain. The dampening graph only goes as low as 0.2 while the other is 1 to 0.

The Gear VR lens mod entirely depends on personal experience and preference. I've never tried a Gear VR and wished my Rift had those lenses. A lot of things are actually, technically, worse, even if you may not notice it consciously, including pupil swim, geometric distortion, spherical aberration, chromatic aberration, and most importantly, eye box size. The only thing it has over other lenses is no god rays, which a lot of people fairly get annoyed by and would trade away all those other benefits for, but personally I've been able to kind of just get used to it so all the other benefits of fresnel ultimately overweighs the negative.

A Valve engineer also commented on this issue directly, and said that mostly the reason they picked fresnel was because they wanted it to have the least pupil swim possible, and because they wanted to optimize it to appear fine for a larger amount of the population. It wasn't because fresnel weighs slightly less (that's a happy coincidence), nor because it costs less (it might actually cost more).

But really, this won't be a problem soon. Next gen headsets will just have better lenses and that's basically proven. The Oculus Go lenses use a new aspheric-fresnel design that produces just a small amount of god rays while still maintaining a lot of the benefits of fresnel. The Pimax lenses are also good, apparently (I suspect they use a combination of fresnel and aspheric, similar to Oculus Go, which is why they reportedly have minimal god rays). And hopefully others jump on that bandwagon too.

Start with a very low number like -.005 and work from there. You'll also want damping, elasticity, and stiffness to be low-ish.

Some VR gamedev progress. After studying the source code of the VRArmIK project and demo scene, it's actually a pretty rough implementation to adapt to anything. Makes a lot of assumptions about the environment and local transforms. But, a quick script to map the calculated rotations to a humanoid avatar and it mostly works. The body is completely unbound, just floating along with the head though, so there's still a lot to do for actual full body. The actual paper for the VRARmIK project is simple and readable https://www.markussteinberger.net/papers/HumanUpperBodyIK.pdf . I want to try reimplementing it in an easier-to-use fashion.

In addition, I tried to map the steamVR SDK's skeletal input to the humanoid hands, but having a lot of trouble. steam's idea of a hand armature doesn't match unity's, and I haven't figured out how to get it to work right using the provided SteamVRBehaviourSkeletonCustom script. Mapping the finger rotations just splays the thumb off weirdly. Also, you can see VRArmIK's wrist rotations aren't as accurate to IRL (steam's hands line up perfectly).

Touch controllers are the most ideal fitting I have ever used. It was the first thing I noticed. The issues I can see before even holding a knuckles controller is that it's straight instead of curved so it's going to feel more like holding something, and they protrude more around the hand so they're going to hit each when doing anything requiring them to be close together. When I've got the stock mount on my controllers I find that a huge problem when trying to use pistols because of how it extends below the hand.

OK GUYS SO. I think you all remember me as the cyberpunk who endeavored to live out the rest of his life in virtual reality. I have been able to replace the VRJug with my VRCatheter, the VRSock duct-taped to my behind with a proper VRPump, and figure out workarounds to a few other issues.

First of all, the instacart deliverers wouldn't take the groceries inside for me, forcing me to have to enter meatspace... a simple phone call to their headquarters fixed that issue. I just had to tell them that I'm disabled and very, VERY angry that i was not being treated fairly due to my disability.

my mother also came here yesterday. she doesn't understand. kept telling me that i was pathetic and that i'll die like this. I just had to go to the void club and turn the volume all the way up to drown her out, it did hurt my ears but god i dont want to go back to the real world. I keep getting calls from the student loan people so i turned my phone off, i hope they give up just like the people trying to get me to pay the medical bills. scum. i'm not a part of your world or economic system anymore. You CAN add Vive FBT to Rift or WMR, it's just more expensive. Spending $20 to dip your toes isn't the end of the world, but it's never going to be a permanent solution. If you enjoy FBT, you'll want to go for actual pucks and lighthouses.
