Shaders!

Lately I've been playing around with shaders, and have settled on Reflex2. The thing I like about it is that it has a lot of options for masks. This includes rimlight masks, shadow masks, and matcap masks. This means that you can pick and choose where rimlights and shadows fall, allowing you to have these nice things on your body but not your face all in one material. This makes my 1 material autism very happy.
The matcap mask is great for making sure metal textures fall where you want them, and not where you don't.

Reflex2 also allows for an emissive scroll mask, which lets you have pulsing or scrolling lights. That's been very useful for the cyberpunk event.
I know some of you develop shaders, so please consider expanding the degree to which you allow masking in your shaders. I'd prefer to use a /vrg/ shader.

Also, as you can see, I've hidden my identity here so please don't think about who I am based on my unity scene too much.

Inside out tracking is all well and good, but I really wish there would be universal adoption of the steam VR tracking standard. Lighthouse is a dead end considering alternative solutions in the future that don't require external markers/sensors. There are already better ways to go about motion controller tracking and we've only scratched the surface of techniques so far. It's lightweight, scale-able, cheap(or rather will be when more manufacturers get involved), robust, and works damn well. While yes, I agree that there will be better technologies on the horizen, but right now and ofr the next 3-5 years at least, this is most likely the best we'll see, especially for use cases involving "full body tracking".

About the feasibility of ultrasonic tracking, it has come a long way from powerglove days. Physics does limit how good it can be, but you really need to get it out of your head that something can't be good just because it was bad many years ago. It's more than good enough today for a hybrid method. What I mean by hybrid method is that you do not use ultrasonic to track the controllers majority of the time. Ultrasonic is used to supplement the tracking when it has gone out of range of the cameras, and the great thing is that it can keep tracking kind of reasonably well even without line-of-sight, because of the diffraction of sound waves.

WMR is already old and Quest (as well as Cosmos) will be better on coverage with 4 cameras, but even with WMR, it covers the majority of tracking FOV you need most of the time. The tracking on the peripheral of your head does not need to be so good. I would argue that the proof for why we do not need almost-perfect tracking for out-of-FOV cases is in current games. WMR has already proven that for the majority of games, it's already good enough, with the exception of games that you need to reach too high or too low with, like grabbing something for a holster, but then that action doesn't require the highest quality tracking. Reaching behind your back to grab an item there doesn't require the highest quality tracking either.

Rare times, just like Vive/Rift have rare times they lose tracking because of occlusion, so it's a wash. As for limited vertical FOV, what he said is that the controllers couldn't track if they were too far away, vertically, because he tried placing the controller at knee or below height. But for controller tracking, that won't happen unless you have really long arms. In the video footage you could see that he drew those circles in pretty wide arcs so you know motion controller tracking won't get lost so easily. Are you arguing it wouldn't? Or that it wouldn't track FBT pucks, which I never said it would?

At this point you're just arguing semantics. Obviously and in the same paragraph, I was saying LH would still be relevant for a while, and of course, relevancy is what I meant by deprecation, not that it would technically get deprecated by Valve (officially dropping support for). But let's ignore that and say you're right. How do you expect that Lighthouse won't be deprecated eventually? Even if SLAM+LED array tracking+ultrasound+another thing for FBT doesn't become the norm, there will be other tracking technologies that come out that will be better than LH for most consumers at least in its current form. There is also sufficient demand for solutions that are cheaper, don't require mounting base stations, and in the case of FBT, don't require strapping trackers on, which is why companies have pursued other methods instead of coming up with their own LH equivalent which they fully can as it's not exactly some alien black magic sauce.

VR still has a lot of room to grow, but it has been about 3 years and there hasn't been many or any game that necessarily has to have nearly that much perfect tracking for controllers across the entire volume of the sphere of possible poses around the shoulders. It would have to be really unique, and at that point you're just asking for purposeful holding back of the industry in order to satisfy some possibility that doing so would yield a single yet unknown use-case. In the future, even if the ultrasonic hybrid systems comes out and proves worthwhile, it would still likely get "deprecated" (become an irrelevant niche in the industry if not completely disappear), perhaps pretty quickly (as in, "a few" 3-5 years later), as there is still a lot of potential in other tracking technologies that haven't been developed yet, including miniaturized and highly efficient SLAM systems, clothing that comes standard with embedded sensors, BCI, and other novel sensors and techniques.

And when that deprecation happens, we will be able to do more unique things, if they really couldn't have been done otherwise. And that future would arrive faster by LH being being made irrelevant in favor of the hybrid tracking system I'm arguing for, because it would lead to higher adoption of VR, higher investment, and thus more R&D, which all goes in a cycle.

This is the problem. And people misunderstood Palmer's little blog post about this as well. It's not that VR would be a huge ton more successful by only decreasing the price. And neither is it necessarily that VR would be that much more successful by increasing features. It's about a balance of both price and qualities (hardware features, software, ergo, etc), probably best with a market that has devices spanning the range of price points. The optimal price and qualities for the product that would bring the most amount of success to the market is up for debate, but that is what we're doing right now, isn't it?

Wow, rude. And no, I've not argued for lower standards. As it is, the Vive isn't even the market leader. If we get Rift S and it's basically just Quest then you'll have even more reason to complain about LH not being adopted. But that, and the low adoption of Vive, is even more reason to advocate for at least improving those tracking systems, if they really don't want to use LH. And they might be able to improve those systems in various ways. I've been saying that ultrasonic is one of those possible ways that is seeming pretty promising. If a tracking system like Quest with 4 cameras that cover even more of your FOV gets combined with ultrasonic for the small parts that aren't covered, really, it would only be a good thing for the industry. I get if you prefer LH on a personal level in your hardware, as do I, in fact, but there is no need to hate on other solutions.
