After having a hateboner for H3VR for so long, I can say I can actually enjoy it as a video game. I always thought ArmSwing was a meme, but after getting over the fact that it looks like I'm masturbating viciously from someone else's perspective it's actually really great locomotion. No, some of the mechanics were changed to work better in VR. It has parts of some of the levels from the flat game, but there's a lot less content.
It's hard to recommend at full price, but worth it when it goes on sale if you really want something close to the flat game in VR.
There are full VR ports of the first three games too if you want to give those a shot.

The extra cameras and the not-Windows-fucking-cliff-house is what made me want to buy it. The touch controllers are nice as well.

We're never getting an SDK. And even if we did, it still doesn't solve the basic problem.

I remember when HL2 came out. Everyone was hyped, it shipped with Hammer, all the modding shit you could ever need, and people were pumped to play and make some full conversions like the stuff that existed back with HL1.

Except that stuff didn't appear for years, and when it did, it was mostly garbage. And that was with a HUGE community. VR has fucking nobody, even if we had a decent SDK I don't think it'd solve the issue.

Not really but it's very cheap at like 5 burger coupons. It's the arcadey shooter everyone plays to relax and laugh at sweaty CSfags who consistently topfrag on losing teams. Guns aren't realistic in the slightest but controlling them is very smooth and intuitive. There's no way to get this level of weapon interaction/melee/IK/physics from the get-go in Unity/UE4, otherwise we'd see dozens of H3VR/Blade'n'Sorcery/Climbey blends and clones.
How long would it take an average mod team to get to Boneworks level? I'm not saying we need a dedicated VRChat SDK, because yeah, it's pointless if you know your way around Blender and Unity's SDK, but if Boneworks ends up a walled-garden game, it will just be another singleplayer FPS you sometimes play between Pavlov.

Literally everything I've seen from Boneworks is utterly unimpressive, though. It looks like the same janky B&S physics but slightly improved, which isn't even vaguely appealing to me.

Until VR can simulate weight (i.e. never, in a home setting), these awkward workarounds don't fucking work. No, pretending to lift something heavy does not make it more immersive. It makes it more of a chore to play.

There's a reason games like H3VR don't simulate weapon weight when you're holding them. Because it's fucking dumb. Ideally, recoil would be at the hardware level, but that isn't something you can enforce because it's pretty easy for little Timmy to open up his new fancy gun peripheral or robot arm and break a few pieces to give him laser aim. So we're stuck with model recoil and a little buzz in your hand.

I would much, much rather have a moddable version of H3VR instead of boneworks. Because I already know the systems work in H3VR. I like having lots of weapon choice, and there's a lot of dumb stuff you could do to the existing game modes to make some pretty decent games with persistent progress. The game has some minor issues, but most of them would be very easy to fix with an SDK. Boneworks? I haven't even seen any inkling that that game even has attachments for guns.

I just tried out Pavlov (played against bots to learn mechanics) and it's really fun once you figure out how it works.

You know how looking down sights is fucking obnoxious because of the dogshit resolution of all current HMDs? What if your protagonist had a magnifiers loupe button?

Just hit the button, and your FOV is changed from the traditional 110 or whatever to something much smaller, say FOV 50-70. Now, your sight picture takes up far more space, your enemy takes up far more space, everything is much easier to shoot, and you can switch back to regular FOV so you can actually look around.

Nah, i did some basic practice. I'm usually shooting more or less like pic related, except legs are in weird places because vr. I don't mean to say that shooting using pistol sights in vr is completely comfortable and that i can't understand why anyone would sulk at that, but i feel like it's less of an issue than everyone claims it to be. Maybe i've exaggerated a bit with "no more discomfort than irl", but thinking binary, i'd be closer to say "it's not an issue at all" than to "it's an issue".

Also, related thought: i love how you don't have to focus your eyes on a gun because everything is within depth of field.

Skyrim VR is supposedly the better of the two, but I haven't played Fallout 4 VR for comparison. The port is fine, but it's still pretty much the same game you've already played. If you're fine with that, and you don't mind modding it a bit to fix some of the issues, it's probably worth it though.

It is a new frontier, it has reached a point where set up is quick and easy, and it's relatively cheap as a hobby. Compare it to hunting, certain sports that require a lot of equipment, alcoholism, camping, etc. video games are fairly cheap even at an enthusiast level. Once you got the gear the costs are minimal to maintain it. It takes me maybe 90 seconds to turn on steam VR, put the headset on and the earbuds in, and get my controllers situated and I'm ready to start playing. VR really has hit the perfect point of entry, at an enthusiast level. I am eager to see if the Index is worth a fuck, and to see how the Quest fares and how it affects the market itself. What VR is really lacking right now (in my opinion) is a "killer app" single player game like Skyrim (Skyrim VR doesn't count). Most VR games are like arcade games, which is fitting considering that's how video games themselves took off.

Hey everyone, so I've been lurking around a few different places and by now I've seen a bunch of prototypes of people doing interesting stuff with Quest and locomotion there. So since you can have the ability to easily bring it to a huge space, we can now do stuff with redirected walking. But we can also do dynamically generated levels based on your play space like Tea For God does. And we can play with impossible spaces that basically uses virtual portaling to map virtual rooms together in a way that makes it feel like you're exploring a larger space, which Tea For God also does. If we combine all of that together somehow, and maybe use even more tricks, I feel like we could be coming upon a revolution in locomotion and maybe VR itself. Maybe it won't work in our rooms but it'll be such a compelling experience of VR that I feel like collectively, we'll just make it work, and do whatever we can to find that space to play in, whether it's in an empty parking lot, field, or whatever. God I'm so excited, I can't wait to see things progress.
