I just ordered an Oculus Quest kit. Have been using a GearVR for about a year and decided it was worth an upgrade, given how fun VR experiences have been.

I've heard that the Oculus store for Quest games is pretty heavily curated, so sideloading rejected apps will be pretty much required to get the most out of the platform.

Are there any recommended sites/repositories for downloading APKs? I've already picked up SideQuest, and one site recommended apkmirror.com for getting standard Android app apks.

If I plan on trying out SteamVR titles on the Quest by using Virtual Desktop, is there a good place to pick up SteamVR titles so I can try them before I buy them?

Should I upgrade to 2.80? Any advantages/disadvantages? Are there anything I should consider (plugins/etc)?

I was gonna go ahead and buy a third party face cover for my Rift S but can't find anything. It released a couple months ago, what gives? The base foam one is not comfortable.

Let's talk about foam and covers, actually. My Oculus' cover is slipping off from sweat and weight from being propped open at the bottom so I can eat/drink in VR. Now, you can just glue that shit back on? I can take it off and it's still good enough to get put back on? Or do I need special adhesive for this stuff?

dk1 is the same quality as phone VR/google cardboard. It's only 3DOF.

The most budget you'd want to go for the games you actually see in the thread is a cheap WMR headset on clearence, around $150-200. Anything less will be a huge hassle to get working properly if at all, e.g. dk2 + wiimotes or something else equally jank.

If you don't know the original game, it's a sort of simulataneous turn-based space combat puzzle game. It starts out pause. You move and orient your ships where you want them to go, press play, then about 10 seconds of battle plays out in realtime set to chopin's raindrop prelude. Repeat until enemy ded. Very comfy.

The VR version plays well, and is a lot easier to visualize the battlefield and orient the ships since you can just look around and use your hands. It's a little annoying to actually orient your hand in the direction you want the ship to face though, and you can't rotate the space at all. You'd think with the whole "no direction is up" meme you'd be able to orient the entire battlefield in any direction, but instead you get dumb vingette effect while dragging.

So I started playing Take and hold on the H3VR but I have some questions. I hit the sphere node thing and the weiners come after me but how do I stop them from hacking the point? If you are playing in the standard mode you should be spawnlocking your mags/stripper/moon clips.
A robot lady will tell you to destroy the encryption during the hold and you need to destroy the red crystals. Later on the red crystals turn into big black squares that you should use rifle rounds for, and even later on they turn into swarms which supposedly you should use a shotty for but I just use a rifle for those also.

Enemy guns are fucking useless, even in limited ammo mode so fucking ignore them.

My GPU has been failing, and I thought I might not be able to play in VR anymore. I recall spending the better part of one day just trying to fix it through software. Let Oculus update, set up a new game, and am downclocking and ramping up fans to improve GPU performance. Was able to play Aircar again (highly recommend) and test a video player, both without any trouble. I can finally play Pavlov again, or give some other games a go. Not sure what I should do first, though. I've heard good things about Vivecraft, though I never played Minecraft before. Wonder what I should do.

More thoughts on Rift S having used it more and briefly tried the original RIft again:

The shaders you see on the vrgcraft.space website webms don't require forge, they'll work on the 1.14 release. A lot of the heavy gameplay mods of minecraft and modpacks (FTB, thaumcraft, etc) are what require forge, which will probably be stuck on 1.12.2 for a while.

Speaking of which if people are still interested, I'm also going to host a 1.12.2 modded server at some point in the near future. It's fun in a different way than vanilla, at the cost of a jankier experience.

Set your safety settings for Friends to include everything except Animators.
Then when you see a friend, you can swap between "use safety settings" and "show avatar" to toggle their animations on and off as needed.

Hey /vrg/, I wanted to get into some racing games that supported VR. I came across Assetto Corsa and project Cars. What am I looking at with each of these and is Project Cars 2 a straight upgrade or is it worth getting 1 and 2. Also are their any other racing games worth getting while the sale is going on? Can be arcadey I like what I see with redout.

Assetto Corsa has a "driving assist" mode that adds a magical force to keep the car stable, pretty arcadey. It has a lot of modded car and map support as well. Its VR support is really janky though, you need to use your mouse and keyboard to navigate the menus. there's a group of anons that play AC on wednesday nights, NA hours.

I bought pcars2 in a sale a while back, still haven't played it yet. I've heard it has less janky VR support.

assetto is usually hosted during the week and next redout race should be next weekend 9pm est

Redout is arcadey but it isn't as casual as it looks nor is it a steep learning curve it's just got a high skill ceiling for speed and perfect racing lines plays exactly like you'd expect a F-zero gx successor would play in current year with vr support.
Btw all the current streamables and webms posted in this thread are the "slow" tier 2 cars :^)

Current lobby status is similar to early pavlov lobbies last year with 1 or 2 really good people and the rest newbies who are getting gud very quickly. Looking forward to the day where we have full vrg lobbies of tier 4 veterans.

I just setup my first VR headset this weekend. What do you guys do to protect your lenses from scratches? I refrained from using my glasses over the weekend for fear of scratching the lenses accidentally.

It looks like prescription lens inserts may be a good solution. Do any of you have experience with them? I see widmovr and VROptician have prescription inserts available. Are their products worthwhile? Are there any other manufactures that I should be aware of?

Don't touch your lenses with your fingers or any objects and you should be fine
Micro scratches will happen even with the included lenses cleaning cloth, but you will never notice them. Even some deeper scratches can be hard to notice while you're using VR
