Looking through the game files, the sound files for the numbers and letters are stored in individual sound clips, see pic related - There is no individual sound clip for the either sequence. The encryption key and any resulting ciphertext are dynamically generated, maybe even unique for each new game. I don't have time to do another playthrough yet, but will take a look come the weekend. If anyone is keen to crack this themselves, record yourself near the (correctly tuned) radio at the start and in the lobby of the northern star on the same playthrough. Most /vrg/ things happen in friends+ instances, so you have to know someone of us to join. You can try adding Yuru, make a public instance and post its ID and hope for someone to come get you, namedrop yourself, or hope for people namedropping themselves in the thread for you to add.

People are super welcoming and friendly in VR, don't hesitate to join. You are not required to speak - or do anything, really - but actually interacting with people will make it easier to friend each other.
The different time zones (SEA, EU, US) all have a bit of a different flair to them. The former tend to have smaller groups and are quieter, so it's easy to get noticed. If that's too overwhleming for you, maybe you want to go to the big NA meetups instead, but that can also be overwhelming due to the sheer loudness. But, you'd also get to know a lot of people. SEA watches anime a lot.
You can most easily meet people by going to and participating in events.
Report, hide and, most importantly, ignore shitposting in the thread.
Turn off Safe Space or whatever it's called in the settings. It removes meshes directly in front of you, so people can't headpat you.
Consider turning off all safety settings. Maybe leave in hiding custom animations for non-friends, if you are a pussy.
Having a custom avatar is not required, but almost everyone of us eventually gets one. Don't worry about it at the start, you aren't allowed to upload one the first few days of playing anyways (you'll get a notification when you can).
Public worlds are very different from oher worlds.

The ending, with Eli handing you the crowbar and having "Work to do", presumably that's Get back Alyx from G-man, right? Which sets up G-man and his employers as the adversaries of the game, which is unusually front-and-centre for them from what we know.

I wish the game had MORE clutter without crashing or physics going crazy. I love when environments have all manner of random shit in it, because that's how life is. I feel you. The clutter is a ton better than boneworks, but it wears a little thin after a while. Same with the environments in general, you start seeing the same kitchen props and hallways and stuff, though again it's far better than any other game I've played so far.

It's been interesting going to the maps in vrchat where anons have scanned in their rooms; Even though it's all blobby and low-res, the sheer density of clutter even for "clean" rooms really makes it apparent how much further you'd have to go than alyx for realistic levels of clutter. This game is too scary for me

It's over! I enjoyed it. Like others have said, the grabby hands are the best part of the entire game. Everything else is basically 2017-tier mechanics with all the rough edges polished off as much as possible. It's not the absolute best in immersion, but it all serves the story well enough. Smooth turning in the new update is an improvement. Teleporting around is still necessary for the firefights unfortunately, and is probably my least favorite part. Jeff level was great, though it was just at the edge of 3spooky5me. The rest of the game was spooky, but not as horror or jumpy.

Spoiler impressions:

Zoo level was really kino. I would've liked to see an antlion guard fight like nova prospekt in there. At least on normal difficulty, the regular antlions were pushovers, I remember them being faster in hl2.

Annoying puzzles: that door with 4 locks after the antlion open fight. the 3 cranes with the pipe; somehow I fell off one of the hanging pallets and was in the pit, totally dark, but I didn't die so I had to restart.

The green energy bolt attack level wasn't as satisfying as the super gravity gun level hl2. The motion you make didn't feel right, and tossing grenades down the hallway was kinda meh too. The walking (teleporting) simulator with the spooky flipped hallways and ghosts was kinda meh too somehow. I was expecting a puzzle at least. The "boss" fight with the big gun and the strider was merely okay as well. I feel like the first half of the game was a lot better than the second overall.

Felt bad getting to the last upgrade station and not having enough resin to upgrade anything.

HL:A is very nice looking and a manages to be HL in vr. That said there are several narrative games better including Boneworks, Lone Echo and Stormland. In HL:A you never really feel like you are outdoors, it's a series of tunnels and small rooms, The open areas have a definite matte painting feel. The limited interactivity is made worse with the item hunting making sure you look under every box for resin. Despite there being pipes and shovels lying around, there's no melee. For some reason, npcs run and hide behind counters to talk to you.

You know, now that I think about it, OLED (if not some other technology like microLED) might be the way to go for the next upcoming headsets. Sure, the resolution wouldn't be as high as LCDs, but this generation's LCD panels in the Index and Rift S are honestly high enough to not produce a distracting SDE anymore in most games. With next gen OLEDs, the pixel density and fill may reach this level, and I'd be satisfied with that. The contrast ratio and colors of OLED are missed and do in fact greatly impact games like Alyx where there are a lot of dark scenes.

The whole game was designed around VR, and the slow pace and having to reload by hand are a big part of it. Alyx is borderline survival horror, and that clip looks like HL2 with a new coat of paint. At least keeping the slower pace would've kept from completely breaking the game.

Good evening my dear anons. Due to a game update the Beastaber lobby is once again postponed until a new version of the multiplayer mod is released.

This update will break all of your current mods but it's not to hard to get them working again and you can play custom beatmaps at least. I would refer you to the op but looks like it's still vandalized.
What you will need to do is run the game once to update then download the new mod assistant version from here:

And then just install mods as normal. Fairly straightforward but there's a lot currently missing. I would rerun it over the next week as more mods will update to the newer version and will appear in the list.
There's no telling how long it will be before an update. It's been several months and the original mod dev has still not released an official update, so the patch will likely come from some other fork. I'll post an update when I know more.

I do miss the wider spaces of HL2. Alyx had only 3 fights I remember that weren't in tiny corridors.
