I think VR will eventually end up as glasses form factor and the ability to immediately switch between VR, AR, and the real world would make it a lot more popular. It's awful trying to do anything in the real world in VR. Yes, although most rigs and the IK in vrchat is designed for looking good with upright humanoids. If you want to turn a crawling irl human's foot and hand positions into the positions of the feet of dog on all fours (for example) you'll find it challenging. It's certainly possible, but it's advanced stuff so set it aside if you're new or inexperienced with avatars.

vrchat has Final IK as a whitelisted component which is pretty comprehensive. You can set up your own IK as long as you have a humanoid skeleton somewhere on the model assigned in the rigging screen. Centaurs, spiders etc are done with custom IK. It's advanced stuff, but it's possible. Never seen a FBT quad dog, but it would be neat.

I've been using vr for 2+ years now. Damage usually happens gradually. If there is no damage to my eyes after 5000+ hrs of VR yet then there is nothing to worry.

What's the tracking quality like for Quest vs the Index?

Worse, I have to extend my hands further when aiming two-handed rifles as it gets jittery when the hand is too close to the camera. The brighter the light the better, which isn't a problem with Index, and you'll lose tracking behind your back or just keep your hands out of sight for more than a second. As for Beat Saber and the like, I'm not sure as I didn't get to Expert+ levels of 'tism, but as long as your hands don't go out of camera's reach it's actually pretty darn good.

Looks like they're using just 3dof rotation from IMUs and doing the forward kinematics from the hip and legs. Should be pretty robust, no occlusion issues. The bend of the spine and neck is underspecified I think so getting hip position purely from hip orientation and headset isn't exact, but probably good enough.

Actually we can do more about this problem as long as we make a few assumptions and the user follows them. If the user has at least one foot in contact with the ground at all times, we can then work upwards from the foot. Basically your feet are anchored to the ground or frozen in their position. Then IK is used to figure out the position of your upper legs based on the rotation, and then the hips and spine. The user just needs at least one foot on the ground at any time in order for the IK to work. This is actually how some IMU-only systems do positional tracking by themselves, and it's proven to work. There are a bunch of escape room type maps in vrchat of varying quality. There are actual standalone escape room games too, but they all feel expensive for like 60 minutes at best of a non-replayable experience. I played A Fisherman's Tale and it was fun, but took me just about 50 minutes to beat it. I Expect You To die is supposedly good but I've never played it.

If you want just one puzzle game and not a bunch of disconnected demos, Talos Principle is good. It's a flat game port so it doesn't have much to add VR or hand-controls-wise, but it's hours of actually hard puzzles and it has pretty comfy environments in VR. It'll probably go on sale for cheap. Oh, there's also Obduction by the Myst devs, if you like that sort of puzzle game.

As far as the headset goes, it's better than the CV1, and I've even heard people argue the lenses are better than the Index. FoV is going to feel narrow on any current headset, but when you really get into a game you don't think about it as much.

I think we need to rethink the whole "event" thing because I'm seeing it used for two different things.

It seems like rather than events we've mostly had these month long themes lately and it should be spelled out that way. Maybe standardize a bit so that each and every month always has a theme where we argue over what it should be. Then we have a standard time, say the last weekend in each month, where everyone has to bring out themed avatars if they have them. Afterwards the group photos happen. This way there are no surprises about deadlines or what not, there's plenty of time to make an avatar, and there's enough space between each to prevent burnout. This can all happen organically so no need for organization or someone posting reminders about when the photos will happen.

Contrasting that "events" should have a set date/time and always be accompanied by an effort post that explains what it's about. Someone should be organizing it and pushing it often in the thread.

In both cases I think if you are pushing for a theme or event you should link some assets or examples to make it easier for anons to participate.

Seeing as how the system had no concept of anything other than a flat ground and that was the only thing it was using to calculate absolute position, I'd say a few cm off after a walk around a conference hall is pretty good. In any case, I was just suggesting that Haritora could take similar ideas and combine them. It would simply just be another way of making the tracking more accurate since now we have absolute position from the head and hands. When both feet leave the ground, then we go back to working out the position from the head and hands alone. Of course it won't be as good as Vive trackers, but it has the potential to be I'd say at least 70% as good, which is good enough for the price it'd likely be. But this is all just theorycrafting, we'll see how they do.
