So I got a Quest 2 for Christmas, finally had time to get it out and mess with it. Wouldn't have bought it personally because of the Facebook bullshit but I've been extremely impressed with the thing so far. Wireless HL Alyx is the best gaming experience I've had in over a decade, legitimately. I think I'm on the VR train now.

Are there any other headsets to look out for in the next couple years or so? If there's a more expensive unit that provides an even better steam VR experience, I'd be interested.

The hip tracker isn't a real hip tracker, it seems to be just a gyro that tells the headset where you're facing. It's use isn't as another Vive Tracker but as an orientation device so you can move the way your hips are facing rather than the way your head faces. check out some comparison videos for Quest 2 / link cable vs index. The differences in quality are fairly marginal. There are pros and cons with both but Index is not twice as good as Quest 2 for twice the cost, it's more like a little better with some whacky gabe tech, and you get to dump facebook. Steam vr lets you hybrid any headset with vive trackers and base stations so full body is still possible with quest, albeit with a little added fuckery.

It is. The Index has a ~130 degree FOV while the Quest 2 has only a ~90 degree FOV. Being able to glance down and see your feet really does help bring you into the world. The Quest 2 does have a higher resolution though at 1900p versus 1600p for the Index. It also depends on whether you care about VRChat and FBT at all. If you do then definitely go with the Index as it comes with base stations which are needed for FBT.

I've felt that VRChat has made me more comfortable socially. Even at events like cons I don't randomly shoot the shit with strangers. But at the vrg meetups I've been able to meet someone for the first time and off the bat have a good conversation. It helps that a lot of people at the meetups naturally share interests. The G2 is between the two at ~110 degrees for the fov, and can supposedly have its FOV improved further with the frankenfov mod to be a few degrees below the index. The resolution is at 2160p too which is nice if you want to be able to read things like the dials in simulators. It doesn't come with base stations though, so expect to spend $600 more if you want FBT.

It's a fucking great headset. I can actually get monitor tier clarity and no SDE. It's been great for watching movies on top of actually playing games. You can notice a lot of details you wouldn't otherwise such as the text on the labels in Alyx and the jpeg compression in the SteamVR skybox. A big but understated appeal for me is that it is very light and generates very little heat which is great for long sessions. Supposedly you can improve the FOV by modding the face gasket which I will need to try, but the FOV is already a big jump up from the Quest and the original HP WMR.

Tragically I only have a GTX 970 and Nvidia is easily more incompetent than HP or Valve. It only runs at 60hz for me due to the displayport format on the card being older. HP recommends that you supersample it to 3000p to fully account for barrel distortion, which I can do for Vivecraft and Beatsaber, but with most games I have to stick with the native resolution or below at WMR Performance Mode. Going through Alyx entirely with the setup worked in parts but it could chug hard in some areas. If I'm going to give Asgard's Wrath and MS Flight Sim a shot I'm really going to have to hope that I can get a 3080 before next year. VRChat can at least stay at 60fps at 2160p thanks to client mods used to decimate textures, turn off anti aliasing, and hide avatars more than 7 meters away for me.

IRL chatting gets you immediate feedback from the guy you're talking to in the form of body language and facial microexpressions. In VR, the only expressions you get are the ones mapped to someone's avatar and if they don't have FBT you don't really get any body language at all. I also find it a lot easier to just get completely ignored in VR than it is IRL, which you can chalk up headset FoV and resolution being crap.
I enjoy VRchat but it's been hard as fuck actually walking up and talking to people. It's easy to feel like you're not welcome and the guy you're talking to wants you to fuck off.

Don't worry brother, most people don't consciously notice anything either. Socializing is a skill that has to be learnt like any other, people aren't just born knowing how to interact.

There are little things, like eye contact, that VR just can't replicate until the technology advances. People obviously look at you when you have their attention, right? Not in VR. Most people do that trick with making the eyes concave so they follow your point of view, which makes it look like everyone's looking at you even when they aren't. So, you walk up and say "Hi" and then everyone in that group talks over you or just ignores you because you haven't done any of the social 'handshaking' that would make it acceptable to integrate yourself into the conversation as a stranger. You kind of have to force yourself in until people pay attention to you, which isn't as feasible for a stranger like me in a group with a well developed set of social links like /vrg/.

The most fun I've had with vidya for quite some time. Pavlov reinvented shooters and flatscreen is just boring now. Tabletop simulator is also nice, beat saber is an obvious main stay and you can always check back for new songs. Games adding vr support to them with crossplay like no man's sky are top comfy. How do I slowly zoom in on objects in Unity?I have some bands attached on my avatar that I want to make slight movement changes to by zooming in but every time I move the scroll wheel it just bolts forward like 5 miles and I can't get anything done. I'd imagine that if you select an avatar that's very cute then this makes it easier for you to approach people and inject yourself into conversations, but the downside is that it infantilizes you in the eyes of other people. For vrchat map makers out there, I figured out how cameras like vrclens and virtuallens take over the vrchat camera without affecting the VR view, so you can make your own gimmicks in your maps. It's a pretty simple trick: since VR headsets render in nonstandard resolutions, detect if the output of the shader is 16:9, and if so, stretch a quad (with the camera render texture) over the entire screen in clip space, else (it's the headset), shrink to zero so nothing is rendered.

The second trick is to make the quad with the material on it have its four vertices in the corner of a cube, so that the mesh's axis aligned bounding box is a full cube. That way, when it's scaled up huge, unity will never frustrum cull it, wherever the player's vrchat camera is in the world.

My use for it is to make a little drone you can fly around the map, with its camera output to the vrchat window via the stream camera. You can't touch the local audio listener unfortunately, at least not in a way that I know of, without also moving the player; you could use udon's control over the audio range of players to at least let a moveable camera hear other people in range, but spatialization would be wrong.

see >>320107214. you learn to just assume guys want to date you, and learn to be upfront in letting them know you can't lead them on and have them orbit you thinking they have "a chance" but instead you value them as a friend first and foremost. it sets up a good friendship because they don't have to perform to be attractive enough as a mate and just can be themselves around you from the get go
it's probably why male/male relationships are so easy to come by here, seeing as is a male-centric comfort site and most people are likeminded and want the same thing you do but can settle for a gay relationship
