They're very conservative, I generally just hide stuff over 10 skinned meshes or 28 materials. It's mostly just to keep a single TDA model from being like 200 materials. I gotta say I barely need the Adv Safety performance settings in vrg instances, so I often opt to only have it enabled in publics.

That said, if you have a directional light on your everyday avatar for no specific reason, you're probably overdoing it.

Adv Safety takes into account what's enabled/disabled as far as I know, and tries to make a more educated guess as to what it can disable. I generally have all friends unfiltered as well as not filtering in Friends+ instances. Not having to switch fallback settings all the time is nice, this is basically automatic.

I would rather have the occasional model with a missing hair accessory than having it fallback to some random Quest-compatible furry rat. I probably reset my settings somewhere while drinking which is how their hair ended up like that.

You have to have the Oculus app open then launch SteamVR, the Oculus app just handles encoding to send to the headset once you launch SteamVR it functions normally and all SteamVR games will work with it. There are very few games that are specially configured to launch directly in the Oculus app which can be annoying if you are trying to use an overlay, but it doesn't actually change anything about playing the game itself. I've only played 2 games where I have no choice to launch in SteamVR and those are Poker Stars and Everyday Golf, it's not a limitation of the headset it's just dev laziness to not add an option.
If you use Virtual Desktop to stream over wifi then that handles the encoding and you don't need the Oculus app at all.

This is nonsense, CATS is a perfectly fine toolbox like any other. You just have to use it when appropriate.

I nearly guarantee that most people bashing Cats still use its tools without even knowing they're a CATS thing, such as applying a shapekey as new basis, or applying a pose as rest pose.

Just *don't* use "Fix Model" for anything that isn't specifically an MMD model. Avoid material combiner and try to manually atlas instead. Other than that, you should be totally fine. There's so many useful tools in there that Blender lacks, even small stuff like merging a bone into its parent.

As for blender advice; there are lots of guides out there but it's really difficult to know which guide you even need so please do ask.

Often times the buttons on CATS does additional things that you don't want it to do. It benefits an avatar creator greatly to actually know what they're doing and then once you know what you're doing you can use shortcuts. Otherwise the shortcuts can unintentionally break things. The amount of times I've had to help people with broken parts of their avatar because they've clicked CATS buttons they shouldn't have clicked is ridiculous.

Save incrementally, try to never overwrite a previous save.

Saving incrementally is good advice too. Generally I CTRL+S obsessively after most changes, and when you hit a milestone (or just feel like you want to "properly" save), you do Save as Copy so you always have a backup point to go back to. The amount of times this has saved my ass is ridiculous.

There's a rather hidden-away "orphan data" view at the top of the scene inspector. Usually even if you delete stuff like textures, things still make their way into there. You can delete those things to make the blend smaller.

Also little-known fact, if people auto-hide "Very Poor" models, your model won't necessarily be hidden as long as it isn't Very Poor in polys/materials/meshes. The game will just disable your dynamic bones from their perspective instead.

But as I said, no one cares about them because they're an awful metric. A model with 33 dynamic bone transforms is rated the same as a model with 255 (over 7x more). Any amount of particles instantly makes you Poor, especially mesh particles.

And let's not talk about the fact that it also counts disabled objects. That's why the ranks are useless, and if you really want to prevent absurdly laggy avatars from taking up your frames, you install Adv Safety instead.

Nothing about Mecanim is optimized, it's literally a decade old third-party plugin that they decided to put into Unity at some point and then literally never touched again. As evident by the fact that we still need Harmony patches for the editor to make the Animator UI work nicely.

The only thing they were able to "optimize" about Animators is that it now uses Jobs to run the state machines internally, but it still has to join back to the main thread to apply all the transforms (which is probably the brunt of the perf issues).

You can actually get around this performance issue completely with the "Optimize Game Objects" option while setting up the rig, but you currently can't use this in VRC because the IK needs the actual bones to work. And of course, this would also prevent you from animating hair or clothes bones.

For real though, install Adv Safety and disable Animators. Everyone will look broken, yes. You'll also suddenly be pushing 2x higher framerates.

It's in the shader dev discord, they had a large discussion about Animators. You can go ask them there. Animators are currently the biggest barrier to having very large/populated instances run well (80+).

Also yeah, dynamic bone is pretty laggy, I'm not denying that. They had the chance to mitigate it though, they've been sent a jobs-based version of Dynamic Bone several times. Is this glowing on the black parts from subsurface scattering (poiyomi shader)? The model has a solid black texture as input to a "thickness map" and when I change it to white it kills some glowing but not this fingertip stuff.

With the full picture it's a lot clearer what the white glow seems to be. It's the same specular highlights as on your chest, so the "smoothness" and/or "metalness" parameter or whatever poiyomi calls, I don't use his shader.

On a separate note, I'd disable subsurface scattering if you don't have a proper thickness map generated. It won't work otherwise.

The areas that I wanted to change were all a single solid color in my base texture map, so I selected them and used that as a mask for the other maps (AO, metal, etc). The rubber is a tileable pattern that I tiled to match the size of the model's material maps. The base texture I replaced the masked area with the rubber layer, AO I think I multiplied, and Metal I added.

as far as i understand it, all of the 'memory' of instance is held by instance master. master transfers to to other player if current master is left, new player synchronizes their states and behaviors with master on join. in this way, if there are no players, new player who joins shouldn't be able to retrieve information about state of player from anyone, therefore player url should 'get cleared' when last player leaves the instance (it was never really saved anywhere in the first place, url only existed in memory of users in instance and was passed to new players on join)
