Index is still best "all rounder".

There are headsets which are sidegrades like better screens, higher fov, usually at cost of godly Index audio and microphone, or tracking, prices are similar. (Vive Pro 2, Pimaxes, Reverb G2). Any headset that uses Lighthouse base stations is really a modular kit with interchangable controllers, hmds, trackers. For me personally, I go for best video quality, and tracking, so Vive Pro 2 + Index Controllers is the best combo.

And there is Oculus Quest 2 which is a price/quality outlier at cost of needing a lot of accessories for it to be comfortable and PCVR compatable (good usb cable or a good 5GHz router), smaller FoV, still good lens/screen, but no native video input, so video is compressed and delayed (but it's barely noticable), but at LOW LOW price and the catch - needs facebook account, and camera based tracking (which is fine for most games).

Assetto Corsa is best overall asphalt racing sim, giant modding community, performs very well, is fun, but VERY realistic. Menus are not made for VR but it doesn't matter, as you launch the game and just drive.

Dirt Rally 2.0 - greatest non asphalt racing sim, menus are actually visible in VR, but still you navigate them using your wheel dpad or gamepad.

If you don't have a wheel there is a ok working crutch: google steam-vr-wheel - adds a steam VR overlay of a virtual wheel you can grab. Games see it as generic USB game controller, so you'll have to map it yourself, but it does work alright.

the 7 point meme finally delivered. After like 2 hours in neos and an hour in vrchat, I can say it's medium cool. The trackers are small and light compared to the 2.0 vive trackers + trackstraps. 10 point tracking just werked in neos and vrchat + iktweaks, no real issues or having to calibrate any differently. Knee tracking is pretty nice, adds that slight bit of missing realism and control, where wiggling your feet no longer wiggles your knees too. Elbow tracking feels like it adds a lot less especially with short anime arms being 100% stretched most of the time, but it's there.

The included straps are pretty mediocre. They're just a single loop of velcro, so the tracker itself slides around way too much (unless your tighten the strap like a tourniquet), and the hip strap has no buckle so you have to slide it off. putting on VR kneepads and elbowpads feels like suiting up for battle.

you can instantly tell when someone uses it, because their hair will flicker like crazy from far away. for some reason, those very thin outlines that people put on their hair breaks anti-aliasing, so it makes your hair look like shit. whenever you're in a dark room and that one guy's avatar basically just ignores the lighting completely and hurts your eyes, you can be sure it's fucking UTS again.

I should, I deliver it through DMs only and have to warn people I don't know shaders enough to actually make it good, just functional. Something I screwed up causes Crosstone (outline) to appear twice outside of the penetrator submenu but that's really a non-issue. I never even considered adding support for the blendshape thing since last I looked the method used was super inefficient, annoying to set up, and would destroy framerate. Not that my hack is much better.

It was fun to learn about it, knowing I built this from something someone else made for an earlier version entirely to fix the bugs with theirs like being unable to bake/lock materials and to try and keep it up to date wit hthe lighting changes in the newest one.

I'd say leave the shadows on, but some shaders allow you to override the current world's lighting on a 3.0 radial puppet. That's what I do nowadays.
You can use a shader that ignores shadows, but you will almost always be way too bright in indoor areas if you do that.

Boneworks and Skyrim VR.
Boneworks is probably one of the most fun VR games I've played, and it's on the brink of getting a good multiplayer mod too.
Skyrim VR is all-around probably the "best" VR game on the market right now, but you have to install mods to make it work properly and have it be fun (such as VRIK, Spellsiphon and MageVR, and of course anything else you want).
I think Skyrim VR ate up most of my VR playtime besides VRChat, followed by Boneworks.

Best way to know is to make a scene file that is lit like the maps you typically go to, create some light sources, bake a reflection probe and light probes, and add post processing. It's the only way to have a good looking model everywhere.

Good idea to do a daytime and nightime version (or at least an area you can move your avatar to to see if you blow out).

Alternately: import a model you know looks good everywhere and copy it's settings so you can learn from someone who's done the work already.
