Turns out that unity saves textures in your material, even if the shader doesn't use it. And it seems like that it even saves it in the material if you replace it with a newer/different texture.
I was able to delete those textures in poiyomi with the button in pic related and was able to shave off another 20 MB or so.

Well, it's easier for Japanese communities to do because they have the added obstacle of a lot of our stuff being in English, so they are already getting training on how to work the interface so you can teach them optimization and a proper workflow in the first place.
We used to have that back at the start, people learned the same workflow and optimization was a lot of that.
Avatar creation is sooo much easier now that it allows people to be lazy.

I've tried to teach people optimization a few times. One of the difficulties I've encountered is that people have a billion different opinions on what you need to do to optimize.
